Dear Friends,
What a year this is turning out to be! The Olympics will test London’s
resources to the limit and bring millions to the city. Many more millions will
watch the events on television. Some of you may even have tickets to go to
some of the Olympic events.
But before all that Olympic excitement, the Queen will have celebrated her
Jubilee with wonderful pageantry in London and she will also be celebrating
her huge achievement with many around the United Kingdom.
Jubilee, the English word comes from the Hebrew word yobel, meaning a
trumpet or ram’s horn. These rams’ horns were blown to announce the start
of the year of jubilee – a year that would change the lives of many.
The story of Jubilee goes back thousands of years. In the Bible it tells us
there was a time when every 50 years, God’s people – the Israelites- would
consecrate the year and pronounce freedom. In this year of jubilee, all
Israelites who had sold themselves into slavery were set free and all land
that had been sold, reverted to its original owner. Ownership of property was
restored to every family and debts were cancelled. It was a time of justice
and equality.
The principles that God gave the Israelites more than 3000 years ago are
still very relevant today, as God’s blueprint for society. God’s law shows us
how to serve Him and others, instead of being absorbed by ourselves.
Our consumer culture tells us that fulfilment and happiness are to be found,
not in what we already have, but in acquiring new things. It’s applied not just
to possessions but to our experiences, our beliefs and even our relationships
with others. It’s me-centred, summed up in the slogan “because you’re
worth it”. It teaches us to be dissatisfied with what we have.
The biblical concept of Jubilee challenges us to look at our lives and check
our motives. Do our lives show the love that comes out of gratitude to God
for his love for us? To what extent is consumerism permeating our lives and
preventing us enjoying life as God intended? You see, Christianity applies to
every area of our lives, and someone once said that “Jesus Christ is Lord of
all, or not at all”.
My hope is that in this jubilee year, God’s love will permeate every area of
our lives and the society in which God has placed us, so that we might
become the people God made us to be and that our faith will affect our
relationships – with God, with each other, with our neighbours and the wider
community, so that together we will find our complete satisfaction, not in
things, but in the one who loves us above everything - Jesus.
With every blessing,
Revd. Sue Wilson

The Parish News Ed Team is asking you
to make a floral display for Milnthorpe to celebrate
the Olympic Torch coming through Milnthorpe on Friday 22nd June.
What can you do to make a splash of colour and celebrate this special event?
Fill the street with colour! Hang a basket! Plant a window box!
If your house is on the route of the Torch Relay ie. Church Street or Beetham
Road, or your garden, or any side of your house can be seen from these roads,
we invite you to take part in a fun competition to add floral colour,
and there will be a prize of 2012 in an envelope. £20 garden gift
voucher and 12 pence! And a gold medal of chocolate of course.
No need to enter with a form,
if we think you’re the winner
we will bring the prize to your
front door on Friday 22nd June.
(see also page 10)
Brother Yun, "The Heavenly Man" is being hosted by Flame International,
and will be in Lancaster, on Tuesday 5th June. Some of you will have read
the book written by this persecuted Chinese leader:
After many years imprisoned for his faith, Brother Yun escaped from Zhengzhou
Maximum Security prison, from which it is reported that nobody had previously
escaped. He described how he heard the voice of the Holy Spirit, telling him to
simply walk out of the heavily guarded prison gate despite having both his legs
broken.
Risking being shot on the spot, he obeyed the voice and walked straight through
several prison doors that were somehow left open, in front of many prison
guards, across the prison yard and finally out of
the main gate.

Declared the only man ever to have escaped the
prison, an official investigation concluded that this
was an ‘embarrassing mishap’ and that
‘Yun received no human help in his escape.’
Come and hear him speak at 6pm on 5th June
at Lancaster Baptist Church, Nelson St. LA1 1PT
- an occasion not to be missed.

Raising money for replacement
of St Thomas' Church Heating
System.
On 16th September Toni Banks from
Milnthorpe will be taking part in the
Great North Run. She is raising money
towards the replacement of St
Thomas' Church heating system.
Sponsorship forms will soon be
available for you to sign. Please
support Toni in this fund raising effort.
Please watch out for other fund raising
events as we plan to raise £20,000
towards the cost of replacing the
heating system in St Thomas'
8
Church. We have applied to a number
of grant making organisations, but
expect to have to raise the bulk of the
funding ourselves.
The old Victorian pipes in the church
are leaking and damaging the floor,
so we plan to replace these with new
radiators. We also plan to replace the
existing boiler with a new energy
efficient boiler which will heat the
church more effectively. Our church is
widely used by the community and we
hope that the community will help
support our fund raising efforts.

Milnthorpe Olympic Torch
22nd June
Our local schools will be lining
the Olympic Torch Route !
For the Parish News colour cover
we recreated our own ‘rings’ with
school uniforms!
leaving Kendal at 8.00 am,
the relay in Milnthorpe starts at 9.26 am top of Church Street,
and 3 torch bearers will run the route to Beetham Rd A6.
The torch will then continue on its journey to Blackpool.
The Olympic flame will come within 10 miles of 95% of people
in the UK, Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey
carried through 1,019 communities on its 70 day journey.
The Milnthorpe relay is exactly at the midpoint, Day 35.
Day 1 was 19th May departing from Land’s End and
July 27th is Day 70 arriving at the London Olympic Stadium.
See www.london2012.com /torch-relay
.
Hope you will be there
The Church bells will be ringing as everyone assembles. There will be music at
the start and finish. Bring flags to wave ! It will be a brilliant event!
You are all invited to
The Kent Estuary Songs of Praise
on The Green in Milnthorpe
on Sunday June 24th at 6.30 pm
celebrating both
the Queen's Diamond Jubilee
and the Olympics
p.s. in St Thomas’ Church if the weather is unsuitable
