A special thank you to VyStar Credit Union for sponsoring or 25th Anniversary Celebration. Years of Service 1986-2011 Wanda Lanier, Executive Director Financials Our History My first year anniversary with Barnabas brings with it cause for celebration for our many accomplishments, as well as reflection of the past year and vision for the future. We remain focused on the important work that we do of helping our neighbors who are struggling due to job or income loss, health problems or other concerns. Thanks to the incredible support that we have received from individuals, churches, businesses, foundations and local government over the past 25 years, Barnabas has been and continues to be the major safety net provider for people experiencing a crisis in Nassau County. Our vision is to be the primary nonprofit resource in Nassau County providing assistance to connect individuals and families to services that will help them overcome crisis and achieve self-sufficiency. We are working to achieve this vision by providing case management services so that the complex issues individuals and families in crisis often face can be addressed. We are striving to expand our food supply to include more produce and fresh foods in order to increase nutritional options for lower income families. Over the next year we will be exploring the potential and feasibility of developing a community health center in Nassau County that will provide comprehensive primary health, oral health and mental health care services for our lower income and uninsured citizens. We are blessed to have received the valuable gifts of time, talents, money and donated items from the hundreds of people and organizations that supported Barnabas this past year, and especially those that do so year after year. It is because of you that thousands of people in our community were connected to help and hope. On their behalf, we thank you. In late 1986, a group of parishioners from St. Michael’s Catholic Church worked with their priest, Father Edward Booth, in creating a center to help people who were in crisis. The center operated in a building adjacent to the church on Calhoun Street that once served as a convent, and was named Barnabas Center in honor of the patron saint that means the son of encouragement. Resources included a food pantry, clothing and assistance with heat and fuel. Their vision was that Barnabas Center would serve as a one stop shop that could help people get back on their feet and break the cycle of crisis that they were experiencing. Within a short period of time, the Fernandina Beach Ministerial Alliance responded and other churches offered support of the program. throughout Nassau County. It has broad support from churches, businesses, medical centers and practices, individuals, foundations, United Way and local government. The agency quickly grew under the leadership of its first executive director, Anne Franck. In 1991, Barnabas Center moved to its new home, donated by Paul Burns, at 11 S. 11th Street in Fernandina Beach. Over the past 25 years, Barnabas Center has grown to become a multiservice health and social service agency that annually serves approximately 5,000 people The heartbeat of Barnabas Center has been and continues to be the hundreds of volunteers who help us fulfill our mission to assist individuals and families in crisis throughout Nassau County. They help make Barnabas the very special organization that it is, which contributes to making our community a healthy and wonderful place to live. Operations Personnel Other Executive Director Craig True, President, Board of Directors Since 2009 I have been privileged to serve as the President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Barnabas Center. On behalf of the Board, I want to thank all of you that have supported Barnabas in the past. We have a diversified Board of Directors which takes very seriously its responsibility for oversight of the resources that you donate to Barnabas. This past year the Board took several significant steps to focus on policy, vision, and the long-term financial security of the organization. These included updating and revising the organization’s bylaws, establishing a development committee to oversee our long-term financial security, establishing expectations for our board members and creating guidelines to identify and engage future Board members. It is also noteworthy that each and every member of the Board supports Barnabas financially through annual donations. We are proud to have received a four-star rating (the highest available) from Charity Navigator for sound fiscal management for the fifth consecutive year. Only six percent of charities nationwide have received a four-star rating for five consecutive years. We are pleased to be in that company. This year marks an important milestone for Barnabas Center – our 25th anniversary. With your help, we will continue to work to help those in crisis throughout Nassau County overcome their adversity and achieve self-sufficiency. President and Chairman Board of Directors Medical Program Crisis Center The Samaritan Medical Clinic is able to provide free urgent health care to lower income, uninsured adults through donations and grants. This past year, a patient presented at the clinic with lumps along his neck that had been there for several months. After an examination by one of our volunteer physicians, blood tests were performed by Baptist Medical Center. The patient was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and is currently receiving lifesaving treatment from a volunteer oncologist. Donations and grants allow for this program to provide food, assistance with rent, mortgage and utility payments, and other services for those experiencing a crisis. Mr. J, a single father of three children, sought help from Barnabas when his oldest son became gravely ill with a serious heart condition that required a lengthy hospital stay at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. Mr. J. needed to stay with his son, and as a result, he was unable to work and earn an income. During this critical time, Barnabas was able to pay the family’s rent and enable them to remain in their home. After his son’s condition stabilized, Mr. J. was able to return to work. Dental Program Thanks to our dedicated dentist, staff and volunteers, the Dental program provides low-cost dental services to adults who are lower income, uninsured and who cannot afford to pay normal dental fees. Dental services include exams, x-rays, extractions, fillings, hygiene, and dentures. Donations and grants enable the dental program to remain affordable for individuals who have no place else to turn for care. Linda was one of the patients who commented on the professionalism and compassion demonstrated by Dr. Daniel Thomas. “Dr. Thomas made me feel comfortable, explained everything clearly, and when he finished I felt like a million dollars.” VISITS: RESIDENTS SERVED: DENTAL VOLUNTEERS: DENTAL VOLUNTEER HOURS: 1,854 640 8 531 VISITS: RESIDENTS SERVED: MEDICAL VOLUNTEERS: MEDICAL VOLUNTEER HOURS: MEDICAL VOLUNTEER & OTHER DONATED SERVICES WERE VALUED AT BarnabasCenterInc.org 1,122 529 78 2,404 $635,451.00 #HOUSEHOLDS PROVIDED RENT/MORTGAGE ASSISTANCE: 367 #HOUSEHOLDS PROVIDED UTILITY ASSISTANCE: 190 # UNINSURED PEOPLE ASSISTED W/MEDS: 72 # HOMELESS PEOPLE/FAMILIES PROVIDED CASE MGMT/HOUSING ASSISTANCE: 36 TOTAL # PEOPLE SERVED: 3,906 POUNDS OF FOOD PROVIDED: 94,425 CRISIS CENTER VOLUNTEERS: 202 (including Hilliard & Special Projects) CRISIS CENTER VOLUNTEER HOURS: 6,861 Community Partnerships New To You As Lucy Tobias recently wrote in an article on Fernandina Beach, “I never miss a chance to visit Barnabas New to You at 930 S. 14th Street. It is a car trip from downtown, but not far. It should be on everyone’s trip list. This amazing place is loaded with great high end brands of everything from clothes to furniture to household goods all at prices that will knock your socks off they are so low. And you are helping to fund their charitable work. I easily walk out with a bag full of great finds for under $20 and had fun doing the deed.” The New To You resale store does more than sell donated items to support Barnabas programs. Many of the Crisis Assistance Center clients are provided donated items such as clothing and furniture at no cost to them. This past year we developed two new initiatives • Council on Aging and the Coalition for the Homeless of Nassau County through the Soup Train, which provides nutritious meals to elderly residents who are on the waiting list for Meals On Wheels; • Amelia Island Trail Team and Cycling and Fitness Center, which provides bikes to adults who lack transportation for getting to and from work through Adult Bikes for Barnabas.
