Paperblanks® Features
clasp closure & book edge printing
Originally used in Coptic bindings, clasps gave protection
and provided decoration to the handwritten, leathercovered books of the Middle Ages. Book edge printing –
an often overlooked element in bookmaking today – was
also popular during the mediæval period. Our clasps and
book edge printing introduce an element of the old
world, with a modern flair.
wrap closure
The wrap closure is designed to keep journal pages safe and secure. All our wraps
fold over the front cover and are held securely in place by a magnetic closure.
strap closure
Strap closures are a small yet sophisticated detail gracing many of our books. Besides
being a wonderfully tactile addition, they also protect the structure of the book.

Paperblanks® Features
ribbon marker & memento pouch
Satin ribbon markers are a simple yet elegant addition to all
Paperblanks® journals. Using a method adopted in the 18th century,
we bind the ribbon into the book at the top of the spine, creating a
useful marker and a beautiful reference point to easily find one’s
page. Our accordion-style memento pouches are a signature
Paperblanks® feature. Functional and delightful too, they serve the
purpose of storing paper ephemera and other items that can easily
be tucked away.

In the classic art of bookmaking,
All of our books are either Smyth sewn or

Coptic stitching first evolved in
the second century and remains
one of the most beautiful and
durable forms of bookbinding
today.
paper quality and page count
To create a pleasant writing experience and maintain our
environmental standards, our paper is derived from sustainable
forest pulp and we use 100% recycled binder boards. Our book
blocks are made from acid-free paper, which creates a smooth
writing surface and will last for centuries. And if your creativity
knows no bounds, several of our formats boast expanded page

Le Gascon
rosettes and spirals
This cover is inspired by an original design attributed to Le Gascon, a legendary
but little-known 17th-century bookbinder. Le Gascon was the inventor of the
pointillé and fanfare styles, and his influence is felt throughout the rich
bookbinding history that follows him.
If this cover was not created by Le Gascon, it is certainly in his style and was
made by another French master. Le Gascon–style bindings first appeared near
the end of the reign of Charles IX and were revered for the sophistication and
intricacy of their ornamentation. Le Gascon’s fanfare bindings featured gilt
decoration that spread out in repeated fanfare patterns, as well as pointillé tooling bordered by bands.
The original cover was made of red Moroccan leather embossed and gilded with rosettes, spirals and dotted lines. It also
featured Le Gascon’s emblematic small compartments which were created by carving ridges into the leather.
No matter who created the original binding, our cover pays homage to its consummate artistry and visionary design.

Mila Marquis Collection
the sweetest dreams
Prepare to be charmed. For anyone awakened to the possibility of magic we
present the Mila Marquis Collection.
Mila Marquis’s ethereal, joyous images are little bliss bombs for the spirit. Her art
combines sparkling emotion and unashamedly sweet depictions of fairies, fawns
and flowers that cajole even the heaviest spirits to soar. The artist uses a variety
of media, including crayons, coloured pencils, gouache and acrylics, to create
her small dreamscapes.
There is vast delight to be found in even the smallest of her precious and joyinducing details. When asked if her work is a reflection of her personality, Mila
responds that she loves it when she is down and her art brings her back to her
“sweetest dreams.” She is particularly happy when illustrations have a little twist
in them and offer a glimpse at “the other side of the moon.”
Mila lives in Hamburg, Germany, with her two sons, a dog, two mice and a turtle.

Emergence
the dance of life
Whether from featureless egg to finned glory, or limbless larvae to winged
fancy, all beings must emerge and transform during their life cycle. The natural
world thrums with dramas like the wee chick fighting her way out of her shell.
The metaphysical realm is rife with instructive stories about the mighty
struggles and small deaths that allow living things to grow and change.
On our Emergence journals we present fish, fowl and beetle as envisioned by
French artist and Art Nouveau decorator Maurice Pillard Verneuil (1869–1942).
Who better to study emergence than an artist who knew all too well what it
takes to be transformed. Through work and talent, visual artists develop their
technique and their vision and, with luck, come to the attention of an audience
ready to receive them.
The creatures featured in these marvellous images are shown in clean and
vibrant primary colours. They beautifully showcase Verneuil’s ability to
capture the essence of flora and fauna and his deep understanding of the Art
Deco movement as well as the wonder of transformation.

Equinoxe
luxury à la fanfare
The intricate rules that governed life during Holy Week deserved to be
housed in a similarly momentous and ornate binding. In cultures all over
the world, the first full moon after the vernal equinox is a sacred time. The
cover reproduced here protected L’office de la Semaine Sainte, which
explained the many rites and observances to be followed during the most
important period in the Christian calendar.
The entire surface of the original cover was adorned à la fanfare, an elaborate, handtooled pattern edged in gilt. Fanfare, which was a style popular
from the late 1500s until the early 1700s, required tremendous skill on the part of the bookbinder and was reserved for books of great importance.
Our cover, featuring a tendril motif, reproduces a 1688 binding from the Düsseldorf Museum Kunstpalast.

The original binding of our Shadow, Natural, Blush Pink and Maya Blue
covers was created in Strasbourg, France, in 1697 to house Paradiesgärtlein,
a text by Johann Arndt (1555–1621). To achieve the gilded and polished
motif, a base layer of silver sheets was first die cut, and elaborate grooves
were then meticulously etched into its surface. The same technique was
applied in Germany in the early 1800s to create the design adorning our
new Aubergine and Esmeralda covers.
The art of filigree is a moving testament to the human drive to ornament in
order to delight the eye and focus the spirit and attention. One can imagine
our journals holding ancient matters of great importance as easily as one can
see them placed with pride on well-appointed contemporary desks.

Gold Inlay
history engraved
Emulating historical styles was in vogue during the 19th century. Patrons
encouraged bookbinders to imitate the sensuousness of designs from the
Renaissance and Romantic eras, and bindings were valued for their
ornamental richness. As the level of luxury increased, book covers were
frequently decorated with gold and adorned with silk, cloisonné enamels
or precious stones. By looking to history for inspiration, bookbinders
created extraordinary works of art.
Our Gold Inlay cover is a faithful recreation of a Stil der Neorenaissance
design popular in 19th-century Germany. Stil der Neorenaissance
remained au courant from 1875 until the First World War. Composed of
solid metal, the original binding was first covered by a fine layer of gold,
and then meticulously engraved by skilled craftsmen.

Nocturnelle
inspired by antiquity
Nowhere is the heft and glory of history more palpable
than in the book arts. The 19th century brought several
innovations, both functional and æsthetic, to the craft of
bookbinding. Our reproduction of an antique French
binding is based on a cover designed in 1829 by publishers
A. & W. Galignani for The Poetical Works of Thomas
Moore. This cover suggests the fine Moroccan leather
preferred for bindings of that era, as well as the structural
sturdiness, careful finishing and ridged spine venerated by
discerning bibliophiles.

Old Leather Collection
the look of antique leather
Capturing the flavour of Renaissance-style binding at its zenith, these
handsomely embellished journals are a delight for the hand and the
eye. During this remarkable period of classical revival, manuscripts
were renowned for their exquisitely crafted covers made of fine
Moroccan leather, handtooled in gold with delicate foliage patterns.
Brought to Europe via the flourishing trade routes to the Far and
Middle East, this style of ornamentation lent a new vibrancy and
lightness of design that was not present in mediæval manuscripts.
The timeless beauty of these antique books is brought into the
present with our finely wrought binding reproductions.

Lindau Gospels
art and belief
The covers of the Lindau Gospels were designed to inspire awe in
early Christian onlookers. The book was carried in processions and
displayed on altars. Its component parts originate from different
times and places; the back cover is recorded as being created near
Salzburg between 750 and 800 AD. Originally tooled in gilt, silver
and enamel and elaborately decorated with jewels, it is a powerful
manifestation of art as a vehicle for belief. Depicted on our journals
is the back cover design of this bookmaking masterwork.

Alistair Bell Collection
art of the north
A giant among 20th-century Canadian printmakers, Alistair Macready Bell is revered
for his moody, expressionistic yet recognisable renderings of boats, birds and animals.
Bell’s initial career as a draftsman in a structural steel plant may account for his
characteristic attention to line and internal rhythm. He was a gifted student of British
Columbia’s wild places and creatures, and he travelled the world to sketch exotic
birds and animals. These studies became the basis for the more than 250 prints he
made.
A Bell print is instantly distinguished for its angularity and bold tones as well as the
innovative use of natural textures. His work has been exhibited internationally and is
included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in England and the National Gallery in
Ottawa. A complete collection of his prints is housed in the permanent collection of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
Paperblanks® is proud to present this first collection in our ongoing series celebrating great Canadian artists.

founded the 20th-century French school of binding.
Marius Michel’s genius involved using curved stamps to create
exotic foliage and flowers. His great and lasting insight was that the
decoration of the book’s cover should relate to its contents.
Everything from the choice of skins, silks and papers, to his ability to
coax miracles from string and cardboard, made Marius Michel an
inspiration to all who came after.
Our Cadenza cover, so named for its evocation of a lively eddying
of leaves before the winter sets in, reproduces a binding created in
1907. The original was in green crushed levant morocco and inlaid
with leather in ten colours. The inspiration for our Allegro cover

What small soul insisted that less must always be more? Certainly it was no lover of
the Rococo style. These contemporary designs conjure the essence of the Baroque
period’s most ornate and magnificent flowering.
The rocaille, or “shell shape,” gave Rococo its name. The style, expressed in art,
textiles, furnishings and architecture, is characterised by arabesques, curlicues,
foliage, animal figures, shellwork and abundant flourishes. Light and playful where
Baroque was often heavy and dark, Rococo is dismissed by some as excessively florid and without
substance. Of course, this is like saying that a marvellous party has no point because it’s entertaining. Fans
argue that Rococo is an 18th-century manifestation of abundance and adornment, rich in complexity and
fascinating in detail.

Going on Beyond
dissolving obstacles in the dance of life
At Paperblanks® we believe that the simple, crucial act of producing books makes us part of a circle in which new realities can
be born. Evolving from perception to fact, fact to truth and truth to reality, we experience an expansion of our consciousness.
“Who Am I” is the focal question of our Going on Beyond series. We have chosen images and words that honour the
intention of reader and writer to move beyond perceived limitations, within and without, into a reality that expresses the joy
of interconnectedness. It is in this space of authenticity and openness that we are truly able to go beyond mind.
Inspired by ancient, contemporary and indigenous wisdom practices from various cultures that
express the astonishing power and intelligence of the heart, our journals hold a space for
transformative experiences. Through expressions of creative insights, sacred knowledge, sentiment
and cognition, we invite you to explore the dimension of intuition not bound by time and space,
paving the way to joyous living in restful awareness.

Mad for Plaid
it’s a plaid, plaid world
From punk to prep and tastefully classic to terminally crass, plaid has always
been a pattern that crosses lines.
Most closely associated with the tartans belonging to the clans of the Scottish
Highlands, plaid material has actually been unearthed in the ancient tombs of
Qizilchoqa in Central Asia that date back to 1500 BC. The patterns shown on
our Mad for Plaid covers were collected in France in the 1800s, but they look
as though they could have come from last year’s runway collection by
Vivienne Westwood or Louis Vuitton! Then again, they may also have been
cut from your grandpa’s pants. So goes the cheeky versatility of plaid.
The plaid pattern experienced a surge in popularity that moved it from its traditional associations into the realm of
permanent fashion statement when Queen Victoria adopted tartans into her wardrobe. Her love of all things Scottish led
her to use the rich blacks, reds, blues and greens of a plaid pattern in her queenly garments. The “pledd,” as it was known to
the Highlanders, has always found a way to express itself, and our journals offer the chance for you to do the same.

Exotic Marquetry
western restraint meets eastern exuberance
When a cabinet is so beautiful it makes the heart soar and the spirits lift, is it
still mere furniture? Or has it become something else entirely?
Our Mother-of-Pearl cover is inspired by a glorious example of 18th-century
cabinetry that features inlaid panels or marquetry taken from an earlier piece,
possibly one made in the East Indies in the late 17th century. The term
marquetry comes from the phrase “to mark a tree” and involves applying thin
decorative surface veneers onto solid wood.
Here we see a rare example of mother-of-pearl inlay used to breathtaking
effect. Other materials employed in marquetry include wood, metal,

Shimmering Delights
pointillé perfection
We present our Shimmering Delights in the colours of confectionery, specifically the
delicious hues of the macaron. Pointillé, one of the prettiest of the decorative arts,
combines perfectly with the colours of these most delectable desserts for small
appetites.
The original binding that inspired these delicious journals dates from a book
produced in 1709 in Zurich, Switzerland. Pointillé, a technique used for forming
cover designs using punched dots to create a feather-light pattern, was especially
popular in the 15th century, when it was used to decorate armour and coats of arms.
On our journals, the delicate pattern of dots is shown off to complementary effect
against our pastel covers.
Our lovely journals will produce shivers of delight in everyone who uses them. Not

Chic & Satin
swatches of fashion history
Every lover of fashion knows the lavish possibilities contained in the modest
fabric swatchbook. Our Chic & Satin journal covers are based on a book of
fabric samples collected in Paris in the 1880s. Designers have always collected
swatches for creative stimulus. The swatches adorning our covers combine a
classically Victorian emphasis on opulence and brazen patterns with hints of
early Aestheticism, which hearkened back to a simpler, pre-industrialised time.
One can imagine designers from influential fashion houses like Dior running a
hand across these small muses in pursuit of inspiration. The swatches are silk
embroidery on satin and hint at everything from gardens in bloom to rare
oriental ornament. Saturated aniline dyes in colours like rich burgundy,
electric blue and midnight black may spur contemporary fashion lovers to
create their own swatchbooks or at least to swoon with delight.

Bukhara
radiance and light
Bukhara, one of Uzbekistan’s largest cities, famous for millennia as a centre of
learning and culture, was the birthplace of this dazzling 18th-century Islamic
binding. The luminous design features ornamentation painted and lacquered
in golden bronze, deftly evoking an indelible sense of radiance and light.
Sometimes known as “Place of Good Fortune,” Bukhara is located along the
Silk Road. The city’s rich intellectual and cultural life was shaped by IndoPersian influences, particularly during the golden age of the Samanids. We
can see those influences in this design which showcases margins of heartshaped leaves, a centre rosette and intricate corner pieces, all executed with
painstaking skill and consummate artistry.

Stitched Splendour
goldwork on leather
Skill, time and infinite care are the key ingredients in the ancient craft of goldwork.
Traditional embroidery is elevated to the highest pinnacle of ornamentation by the
use of gold, silver or copper threads. Our Stitched Splendour series recreates an
18th-century Spanish goldwork-on-leather book cover. For the original binding,
embroidery was created by couching, a painstaking technique that involves affixing
metallic threads onto the surface with nearly invisible silk stitches. Goldwork is a
perfect example of how the decorative arts can transform practical objects into masterpieces
that transcend the categories of form and function.
Developed in Asia more than two thousand years ago, goldwork reached its full flowering in the
Middle Ages, when a style called Opus Anglicanum was used to create church vestments and
hangings. Today, stitchers skilled enough to do goldwork are rare indeed, and the craft is
reserved almost exclusively for important vestments for clergy and royalty. We urge you to
house your thoughts and dreams between the resplendent walls of Stitched Splendour.

Via Romana
noble scrollwork
Let us celebrate the nobility of the Roman Way, the source of the Republic’s ideals
and fortitude, and the strength that enabled ancient Romans to conquer the world.
Our journals feature a representation of the cover of Parvus Mundus, or Small World,
by Laurentius Haechtanus Goidtsenhovius. Each of the stories in the book is a
cautionary tale showing the moral conflicts people face in daily life. Virtue is
rewarded and vice punished. Taken together, these tales form a coherent set of
ethical instructions for the Roman people and are a pure expression of Via Romana,
the Roman way of life.
Published in Antwerp in 1579, Parvus Mundus features a calfskin cover decorated
with gold print plates with strapwork ornament and a scattering of stylised scrollwork.
The original is dedicated to Regent Rudolf II of Habsburg (1552–1612), Holy Roman
Emperor, King of Bohemia and Hungary, and Archduke of Austria. Our covers
celebrate the virtues of Concordia (harmony among the Roman people and between
Rome and other nations) and Fortuna (an acknowledgement of positive blessings).

Baroque Ventaglio Collection
symbolism couched in opulence
Where better to pen a magnum opus than inside this magnificent example
of Roman a ventaglio (fan) binding? Our covers display at their centre a
rose window surrounded by a design of slight Eastern influence and in
each corner a filigree fan – the window quartered. An intricate ornamentation typical of the Baroque period, the geometrically compartmentalised
design finds its inspiration in the French style à la fanfare.
Our covers reproduce gilt-work melting over red and brown Moroccan
leather that shrouds unadorned pages, making these richly layered,

Parisian Mosaic
the splendour of polychromatic patterns
Our Parisian Mosaic collection was inspired by an 18th-century
leather mosaic binding created in Paris by master binder NicolasDenis Derome. Descended from a renowned family of bookbinders, Derome was much sought after as his works showed a
unique flair for lightness and vivacity of design. This gold-tooled
and polychromatic cover recalls a mediæval motif called au semé,
which consists of small decorative patterns arranged in symmetrical lines or columns resembling a sown field. The adoption of
this ancient heraldic motif, combined with fresh colours and new
materials, brought mosaic binding into a new era of artistry.

Vintage Vogue
the spectacle of the stage
Les Folies-Bergère, Le Casino de Paris, Le Moulin Rouge – the names of the famed
cabarets of Art Deco Paris call to mind an exuberant atmosphere of showgirls,
feathers, silks and sequins glittering in the spotlight. Art Deco is synonymous with
elegance and glamour, and the work of the designers and illustrators who created
the unforgettable look and feel of the era is our inspiration for this Vintage Vogue
series.
The covers of our Vintage Vogue journals capture the radiance of the era’s top
ingénues. The alluring image for Plume, originally titled Nuits de Folies, was created
in 1932 by British theatre designer Alec Shanks using charcoal, watercolour and
gouache on paper. French artist Gaston Girbal was creating posters for starlets like
Edith Piaf and Josephine Baker during the same era, and we have chosen one of his
legendary images as our Cabaret Cabaret journal cover. In these art pieces we see
the sway and sensuality of movement celebrated in the best Art Deco style.

William Morris
decorative naturalist
William Morris (1834–1896) was one of the most celebrated practitioners of the
Arts and Crafts movement. In creating woven and printed textile patterns, Morris
chose to work with the ancient technique of hand woodblock printing, finding
inspiration for his famous repeating patterns in the natural world around him:
mille-fleurs tapestries and early prints of herbs as well as the crispness and
abundance of exquisite detail in mediæval art. His evocations of antique florals
and plants in all their profusion, depth of tone and magical gradation of tints have
become design classics gracing the decorative arts, including our book covers.

Japanese Lacquer Boxes
the refined grace of lustrous lacquer
Our journal covers feature images of antique 19th-century Japanese lacquer boxes from the Edo or Meiji period.
Lacquerware is created by painting tree sap onto treasured objects to protect and enhance them. The luxurious
patterns on these boxes, designed in the Maki-e style using metallic dust, are evidence of the uniquely human
ability to create beauty from unlikely sources.

Shiraz
an extravagance of beauty
This 16th-century Islamic binding was originally crafted from black goatskin that
was embossed, gilded, painted and covered with delicate gold filigree. Said to
have been first commissioned by one of the Safavid princes of Shiraz, it came to
be in the possession of Suleiman the Magnificent, the tenth and longest-reigning
Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Suleiman, a distinguished poet and gifted goldsmith, was also a great patron of the arts who orchestrated the development of
one of the most glittering periods in artistic history.
In its original form this book cover was decorated with rows of golden lockets,
handpainted with flowers and rosettes, and overlaid with filigree. Artists of
Persia’s Safavid dynasty (1501–1722) ensured that its bookbinding and décor
represented a pinnacle of cultural achievement.

Rose Garden
botanical queen
Ah, the rose. The flower most storied and maligned. Our Rose Garden
covers are inspired by miniature lacquer paintings that adorned fine
books in 16th-century Persia. The originals were celebrations of the
luxury and refinement of Persian life and culture.
In regal presentations such as Glowing Rose, the rose takes her rightful
place as the focal point surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting: poppies,
carnations, dogwood and tulips. In contrast, Wild Rose is a modest and
stylised depiction of her beauty, subtly enhanced by the play of light
and shadow. Holly Rose is still another incarnation of the queen of
flowers. The delicate red ribbons and symmetrical borders surround
the simple beauty of the central bloom and call to mind a spirit of
celebration and tradition.

Laurel Burch Collection
for the keeping of thoughts magical & sensual
Laurel Burch was a self-taught artist and “flower child” who sold handmade jewellery on the streets of San Francisco in the
1960s. Later on, she continued to rely on her intuition and passion, speaking from the heart with an unmistakable style that
was the manifestation of her love of life and strong imaginative nature. From her fertile imagination, she created brilliantly
coloured, vibrant and moving themes with paint and paper, exquisitely embellished with gold and silver.

Ori
the art of the fold
Folding is an everyday practice in Japan, where from familiarity is born innovation,
experimentation and a finely honed craft. Highly structured yet perfectly organic,
a fold can be at once bravely minimal and breathtakingly sophisticated.
Artist Yuko Nishimura fuses origami and origata in her art, featured here in our Ori
series.
In her relief works, Ms. Nishimura’s folded curves and straight lines suggest formal
structure and the creative impulse. Repetition creates patterns and symmetry which
in turn bring æsthetic and emotional pleasure to the viewer. These exquisite pieces
celebrate the ties between art, culture and everyday life in Japan. From the simple
fold we are reminded of the unending story of human ingenuity.

Kirikane Collection
precision informed by devotion
Kirikane (“cut gold”) is the ancient technique of decorating Buddhist artwork with
gold metal leaf. The precision of the art form is informed by devotion and mindfulness
as the artist heats and bonds together six extremely thin sheets of gold leaf before
using a bamboo knife (chikutou) to cut fine strips or designs. Glue made from hide
(nikawa) and seaweed (funori ) is then used to attach these shapes to the object being
decorated.
The earliest surviving examples of kirikane originate from the ancient Korean kingdom
Baekje (18 BCE–660 CE). In Japan, kirikane flourished during the 11th–13th centuries,
but when gold paint began to replace precious metals the art form was all but
extinguished. Our Kirikane series is inspired by the work of Japanese artist Sayoko Eri
(1945–2007). A devoted revivalist of kirikane, she studied the art form and applied it to everyday items such as boxes (hako) and screens as well as to
Buddhist artifacts. Our cover designs reproduce the patterns of Sayoko Eri’s work using our unique printing process.

Louis Comfort Tiffany was an American artist and designer who developed one of the most
distinctive styles in the Art Nouveau movement. He is most celebrated for his leaded glass windows
and lampshades, but he also created glass mosaics, blown glass, ceramics, jewellery, enamels and
metalwork. Our journal cover celebrates the brilliant, gem-like colours and elegant designs created
by Tiffany and his artisans. By incorporating leadwork as an integral part of his designs, and shading
subtle and exquisite differences within
each portion of glass, Tiffany created
objects of magical beauty.
