Course Description:
Focusing on maintaining optimal functioning of the client, this course includes theory, technical
skills, and clinical components. Laboratory and clinical experiences in various settings facilitate
the application of theory to the management of clients throughout the lifespan. QSEN is used
throughout to enhance the student's knowledge of assessment and the accompanying skills that
reflect professional practice.

Section III
Student Learning Outcome #1:
1. The student will incorporate multiple medical surgical, pediatric, and maternal-child health
concepts when providing safe, quality, patient-centered nursing care to patients across the
lifespan.
Learning Outcomes:
The student will:
1. Care for patients in various clinical settings.
2. Develop a plan of care for medical-surgical, obstetric, and/or pediatric patients.
3. Develop concept maps for patients with medical-surgical, obstetric, and pediatric disorders.

The student will use nursing judgment when caring for patients with selected health conditions
across the lifespan.

General Education Requirements:
The general education goals covered in NUR 222 are critical thinking & problem solving,
proficiency in written and verbal skills, awareness of ethical principles, and information literacy.
Section V
Outcomes Assessment:
A college-wide outcomes assessment program has been put into place to enhance the quality and
effectiveness of the curriculum and programs at Salem Community College. As part of this
assessment program, the learning outcomes for this course will be assessed. Assessment methods
may include tests, quizzes, papers, reports, projects and other instruments. Copies of all
outcomes assessments are available in an electronic assessment bank maintained by the
Institutional Research and Planning Office.

Section VI
Course Activities:
Classroom activities will include lecture, discussion, small group work, and demonstration.
Electronic resources and activities will also be utilized (ATI, videos, web field trips).
Laboratory sessions will consist of practice of skills viewed on ATI, role playing, and
simulation. The lab component enables the student to strengthen existing skills and develop
leadership and management qualities that will be utilized throughout the program.

information regarding the course requirements and means of evaluation.
Attendance Policy:
Regular and prompt attendance in all classes is expected of students. For this reason, the
Department of Nursing has established specific guidelines for the classroom and clinical
attendance in the nursing student handbooks. It is the student’s responsibility to honor and
comply with that policy. Students absent from class for any reason are responsible for making up
any missed work.
