The 2009-2010 school calendar sets a fixed High School graduation day as
Wednesday, June 16, 2010.
** If one (1) snow day is used, school will be in session on Friday, May 28, 2010. If
two (2) snow days are used, school will be in session on Wednesday, June 16, 2010. If
three (3) snows days are used, school will be in session on Tuesday, April 6, 2010. If
more than three emergency days are used, graduation day for the high school and the
final day of school will be adjusted. Note: The Annual Board of Education Election Day
will result in an early dismissal.
Notice to Parents
As a parent of a student attending the Pennsauken Public Schools,
you have the right to know the professional qualifications of the
classroom teachers who instruct your child. Federal law allows
you to ask for certain information about your child’s classroom
teachers, and requires the district to provide this information in
a timely manner if you ask for it. Specifically, you have the right
to ask for the following information about each of your child’s
classroom teachers:
• Whether the New Jersey Department of Education has
licensed or qualified the teacher for the grades and subjects
he or she teaches.
• Whether the New Jersey Department of Education had
decided that the teacher could teach in a classroom without
being licensed or qualified under state regulations because
of special circumstances.
• The teacher’s college major, whether the teacher has any
advanced degrees and, if so, the subject of the degrees.
If you would like to receive any of this information, please call
your school principal.

School Bus Transportation
The Pennsauken Public Schools provide transportation for children in the
district who qualify according to the guidelines listed below:
Mileage Limits:
Transportation must be provided for all elementary students (Pre-K
through Grade 8) who reside more than two miles from school, and all
high school students who live within these limits, but must walk in an
area that is considered hazardous, are transported to school by the Board
of Education. Pennsauken Board of Education provides courtesy busing
for special situations.
Buses are available for children taking part in after-school activities at the
High School and Middle School. Bus passes are required.
Routes and Stops:
Prior to the beginning of each school year, routes are established so that
vehicles will travel the roads safely and serve the largest number of students
within a reasonable time.
STUDENTS ARE ONLY TO RIDE THE BUS ASSIGNED TO THEM IN THE
BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.
Student Responsibilities:
New Jersey statute 18A:25-2 provides that the driver is in full charge of
the school bus at all times and is responsible for order. The driver shall
not exclude a student from the bus. If unable to manage a student, the
driver will report the matter to the principal.
Large student projects are prohibited on the bus for safety reasons.
Students are expected to be in compliance with the following rules and
regulations:
At the Bus Stop:

Remain on the curb - at least 3 feet back from the road
Show respect for private property
Avoid crowding or pushing as the bus approaches
Wait until the bus stops before moving toward the door
NEVER STAND IN THE ROAD - do not move into the road as the bus
approaches
While On the Bus:

Move quickly to your seat - Do not change your seat
Do not stand or move from your seat while the bus is in motion
The driver or principal may assign seats

Keep hands and all parts of your body inside the bus at all times
Do not eat or drink on the bus
Do not litter on the bus
Never throw anything out of the bus window
Be courteous, talk softly - Do not use profane or obscene language
Report any damage to the bus to the driver
Students are responsible for any damage they cause to the bus
Obey bus safety patrol members
IN CASE OF EMERGENCY remain in your seat until instructions are given by the
driver
• Learn to how evacuate your bus quickly
Getting Off the Bus:
• Move quickly away from the side of the bus onto the curb
• To cross the street or roadway - move 10 feet in front of the bus, wait for the
driver’s signal to cross, then cross the street
• NEVER GO BEHIND THE BUS TO CROSS THE STREET
Parent Responsibilities:
The Transportation regulations and the policies adopted by the Board of Education
should be stressed with your children, not only for their own safety, but for the
protection of all students riding the school bus.
If a parent finds that bus service is not satisfactory or for a lost article, please notify
the Transportation Office at 910-2619.
Parents are responsible and liable for any willful or malicious damage done to
school buses by their children.
Here are some recommendations for parents:
• Help your child to be on time at the bus stop. We recommend arriving 5-10
minutes early
• Do not ask the driver to stop at places other than the designed stop
• Assume responsibility for educating your child to cooperate with the bus driver
• Insist on correct behavior while waiting for and riding on the bus
• Accompany a very young child to the bus stop

In accordance with the policy recommended by the NJ Department of
Education, a child shall be admitted to Kindergarten if the child’s fifth
birthday is on or before October 1 of the school term.

• Clinical record of all immunizations given to your child since birth (This
was changed since there are about four different documents that are
accepted as evidence of immunization – not just from the doctor).

Students who enter Pennsauken from another school district are required
to present a transfer card and immunization records.

Medication Policy
If medication needs to be given during school hours, these STRICT rules must
be met or the medication will not be given.
• Specific written request by the child’s doctor to the school nurse noting the
name of the medication, the dosage, the time it is to be given, and any
specific instructions needed.
• Written request from the parent to give the medication
• The medication MUST be brought to the school by the parent/guardian or
other designated responsible adult. The adult must sign in the medication
with the nurse. No student under age 18 may carry their medication to or
from school.
• The medication must be in the original pharmacy container labeled with the
name of the patient, name of the medication, dosage, physician’s name and
the date.
• Non-prescription medications must be in the original container.
By law, medications are given in school by the registered nurse or parent only.
No nurse may administer medications in New Jersey without written instructions
by the patient’s physician. Any specific questions regarding medication
administration in schools should be directed to the school nurse.
ATTENTION
It is important to keep the school nurse informed of any
changes in your child’s health status. Also inform the
nurse of immunization boosters or vaccines whenever
your child receives them. Up-to-date school health records
are important for your child’s well being and continued
attendance in school.
Physical Examination Requirements
According to New Jersey law, all students enrolling in a school district must have a
current physical exam done by their private physician. A written report of the exam
must be provided to the school. This physical exam is a requirement for attendance
and must be satisfied within 60 days of enrollment. Appropriate paper work will be
given at the time of enrollment. If you do not have health insurance for your child,
please contact the school nurse for advice and assistance.
Physical Exams are also required for interscholastic sports participation in grades 6
through 12. If your child is trying out for a sport, specific information will be provided
regarding these requirements.
Emergency Card Information
NJ FamilyCare applications are available in all schools.
A current, readily accessible emergency card shall be available for each student.
The information on this card is very important should there be an emergency
during school hours. We ask that parents/guardians provide home, work, cell
phone, and pager numbers. In addition, the names and phone numbers of
two other adults who can assume temporary responsibility for your child must
be provided. The name and phone number of your child’s primary physician,
the hospital of choice and any other pertinent health information must also
be provided. The emergency card must be signed by the parent or guardian.
Please notify the school office immediately if any of the information originally
provided on the emergency card changes throughout the school year.

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s health status on any given day,
please feel free to call the school nurse.
The quality of a child’s learning is in direct proportion to his/her health status and ability
to adapt to any limitations. The primary goal of school health services is to strive for
the optimum level of wellness in every student so learning can be achieved. Parents,
students and health care professionals need to communicate well to achieve this goal.
A registered nurse is on duty during regular school hours. If an accident occurs, first
aid will be administered. No care beyond first aid will be given by the school doctor
or nurse. If care beyond first aid is needed, you will be contacted. If illness occurs
during school hours and the nurse feels it is in the best interest of your child that he/
she go home early, you will be called to pick up your child.
If your child has a fever (> 100 degrees), he/she should stay home until the temperature
is normal for 24 hours without fever reducing medications such as Tylenol or Motrin.
Be sure to use a thermometer to measure your child’s temperature. Note: During times
of flu outbreak, the schools will follow guidelines for exclusion as issued by the CDC,
NJ Department of Health and Camden County Department of Health.
Any suspicious rash must be checked by your doctor or clinic with a note sent to the
school nurse. Many rashes are contagious and can affect other students.

Annual Integrated Pest Management Notice For School Year 2009-2010
Dear Parent, Guardian, or Staff Member:
This notice is being distributed to comply with the New Jersey School Integrated Pest Management Act. Pennsauken Township School District has adopted an Integrated Pest
Management (IPM) Policy and has implemented an IPM Plan to comply with this law. IPM is a holistic, preventive approach to managing pests that is explained further in the school’s
IPM Policy included with this notice.
All schools in New Jersey are required to have an Integrated Pest Management Coordinator (IPM Coordinator) to oversee all activities related to IPM and pesticide use at the school.

The IPM Coordinator maintains the pesticide product label, and the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) (when one is available), of each pesticide product that may be used on school
property. The label and the MSDS are available for review by a parent, guardian, staff member, or student attending the school. Also, the IPM Coordinator is available to parents,
guardians, and staff members for information and to discuss comments about IPM activities and pesticide use at the school.
As part of a school pest management plan, Pennsauken Township Public Schools may use pesticides to control pests. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and
the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) register pesticides to determine that the use of a pesticide in accordance with instructions printed on the label does
not pose an unreasonable risk to human health and the environment. Nevertheless, the EPA and the DEP cannot guarantee that registered pesticides do not pose any risk to human
health, thus unnecessary exposure to pesticides should be avoided. The EPA has issued the statement that where possible, persons who are potentially sensitive, such as pregnant
women, infants and children, should avoid unnecessary pesticide exposure.

The New Jersey School Integrated Pest Management Act of 2002 requires schools to implement a school integrated pest management policy.
The law requires the superintendent of the school district, for each school in the district, to implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) procedures to control pests and minimize exposure of children, faculty, and
staff to pesticides. Pennsauken School District shall therefore develop and maintain an IPM plan as part of the school’s policy.
Integrated pest management procedures in schools
Implementation of IPM procedures will determine when to control pests and whether to use mechanical, physical, cultural, biological, or chemical methods. Applying IPM principles prevents unacceptable levels of
pest damage by the most economical means and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment. Each school shall consider the full range of management options, including no action at all.
Non-pesticide pest management methods are to be used whenever possible. The choice of using a pesticide shall be based on a review of all other available options and a determination that these options are not
effective or not reasonable. When it is determined that a pesticide must be used, low impact pesticides and methods are preferred and shall be considered for use first.
Development of IPM plans
The school IPM plan is a blueprint of how the Pennsauken School District will manage pests through IPM methods. The school IPM plan states the school’s goals regarding the management of pests and the use
of pesticides. It reflects the school’s site-specific needs. The IPM plan shall provide a description of how each component of the school IPM policy will be implemented at the school. The Board of Education of the
Township of Pennsauken, in collaboration with the school building administrator (principal), shall be responsible for the development of the IPM plan for each school.
IPM Coordinator
The Board of Education of the Township of Pennsauken shall designate an integrated pest management coordinator, who is responsible for the implementation of the school integrated pest management policy.
Education/Training
The school community will be educated about potential pest problems and IPM methods used to achieve the pest management objectives. The IPM coordinator, other school staff and pesticide applicators involved
with implementation of the school IPM policy will be trained in appropriate components of IPM as it pertains to the school environment. Students, parents/guardians will be provided information on this policy and
instructed on how they can contribute to the success of the IPM program.
Record keeping
Records of pesticide used shall be maintained on site to meet the requirements of the state regulatory agency and the school board.
Records shall also include, but are not limited to, pest surveillance data sheets and other non-pesticide pest management methods and practices utilized.
Notification/Posting
The Board of Education of the Township of Pennsauken is responsible for timely notification to students’ parents or guardians and the school staff of pesticide treatments pursuant to the School IPM Act.
Re-entry
Re-entry to a pesticide treated area shall conform to the requirements of the School IPM Act.
Pesticide applicators
The IPM coordinator shall ensure that applicators follow state regulations, including licensing requirements and label precautions, and must comply with all components of the School IPM Policy.
Evaluation
Annually, for public schools, the IPM Coordinator will report to the Board of Education on the effectiveness of the IPM plan and make recommendations for improvement as needed.
The Board of Education of the Township of Pennsauken directs the School Business Administrator/Board Secretary, Coordinator of District Operations, and Building Principals to develop regulations/procedures for
the implementation of this policy.

For school age children, every effort is made to assist the student in
regular education classes. The intervention & Referral Services (I&RS)
Committee develops interventions that will be implemented in the regular
education class. However, if these interventions do not meet the needs
of the student, a referral can be made to the child study team or speech
language specialist. A teacher, administrator, parent, other school staff,
or an agency can make a referral. However, if warranted, a direct referral
to the child study team or speech language specialist is appropriate.
Pennsauken’s Project Child Find is designated to increase public
awareness to assist in the identification of underserved youth with
a delay or disability from age three to twenty-one.
Parents are involved in every step of the decision-making process from
meeting with the I&RS Committee, to giving consent to evaluate, to
giving information regarding their child’s development history and their
perception of their child’s needs and finally, if eligible, giving consent
for services.
Pennsauken provides the following

delays that have been diagnosed with autism

STUDENT INSURANCE
The school district will be providing insurance coverage for all students
during regular school hours for school related activities. An additional low
cost student accident insurance to provide twenty-four hour coverage is also
available. Information concerning this policy will be sent home at the beginning
of the school year. Those wishing to participate in the program must register
during the enrollment period. The coverage may not be purchased after the
enrollment period closes. Students must return the insurance form with the
paid premium or the form signed by a parent indicating that the parent does
not wish to purchase the insurance.

STUDENT DRESS CODE
The Pennsauken Board of Education firmly believes that good grooming and
appropriate dress enhance the educational environment and promote good
conduct in the schools.
During the school day, clothing of students should be neat and clean. Building
administrators are to determine the appropriateness of student dress and
enforce the standards on this policy.
UNIFORMS ARE MANDATORY IN ALL PENNSAUKEN SCHOOLS
KINDERGARTEN THROUGH TWELFTH GRADE AS PER BOARD OF
EDUCATION POLICY JFCAA
The Elementary school dress code for wearing uniforms is as
follows:
• Tan or dark blue pants, skirts, jumpers, culottes, or shorts on hot
days. No sweatpants or blue jeans.
• Dark blue polo style button-front shirts with short or long
sleeves.
The Intermediate and Middle School dress code for wearing uniforms
is as follows:
• Tan or dark blue pants, skirts, jumpers, culottes, or shorts on hot
days. No sweatpants or blue jeans.
• Light blue polo style button-front shirts with short or long
sleeves.
The Pennsauken High School dress code for wearing uniforms is as
follows:
• Tan or dark blue pants, skirts, jumpers, culottes, or shorts on hot
days. No sweatpants or blue jeans.
• Dark blue or Red polo style button-front shirts with short or long
sleeves.
The following instructions are applicable to students K to 12:
• Students must wear appropriate footwear
• No hats or head coverings (i.e. scarves, bandannas) of any kind
are to be worn in school unless approved by the school principal
for a special occasion

School Property
The school attempts to impress upon its students a sense of responsibility toward
school property at all times. Students may be held responsible for property damage
due to carelessness or abuse. Parents are asked to cooperate by encouraging their
children to respect school property. Students are also expected to show respect
toward all private property surrounding the school and property that is passed to
and from school or at bus stops.
SCHOOL VISITORS
For the safety of your children it is required that all visitors and parents report
to the office upon entering the building. Once the purpose of the visit has been
established, a visitor’s badge will be issued. Persons who fail to register in the office
will be subject to possible arrest and/or charges being filed as per local trespassing
ordinances. Parents always have access to the school to solve immediate concerns
such as forgotten money, lunches, books, etc. Please leave them in the office for
delivery to your child.
Student Attendance
The Pennsauken Board of Education recognizes and accepts its responsibilities to
provide a thorough and efficient education for every student within the district in
accordance with the law of the State of New Jersey. The Board cannot successfully
fulfill its responsibility to the student unless the student is present for all regularly
scheduled classes. It is essential therefore, that every student and every parent or
guardian accept the responsibility for the students’ attendance at school.

Adult Basic Education / GED Classes
Pennsauken Public Schools in cooperation with Camden County College,
through the New Jersey Department of Labor offers classes to prepare
adult learners to achieve success on the GED Test and earn their
General Education Diploma.
Classes are offered twice each school year. The first session begins on
Monday, September 21, 2009 at Howard M. Phifer Middle School, 8201 Park
Avenue, Pennsauken, NJ. Registration starts at 7:00pm in the school cafeteria.
The second session begins on Monday, February 1, 2010 at the
same location and time.
