La Salle General Chemistry CHM 111 and CHM 112
The General Chemistry CHM 111 and 112 classes will be using McMurry and Fay, CHEMISTRY,
Sixth Edition, (Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, NJ, 2012) as their textbook for both Fall 2014 and
Spring 2015. Students will also be required to purchase and use the accompanying on-line homework
system MasteringChemistry for McMurry and Fay, Sixth Edition. (Your grade will depend in part on
homework from MasteringChemistry.) There are a number of options for obtaining these materials.
1) The safest option is to purchase the custom La Salle package (ISBN-13: 9781256146575)
from the university Bookstore. This bundle contains a custom La Salle University edition of
McMurry and Fay, CHEMISTRY, Sixth Edition. Unneeded chapters have been deleted to lower the
cost of the book. The bundle also includes an access code for MasteringChemistry. Finally, the
bundled package also gives you access to the eText version of the textbook. The cost of the
complete package is $178 which is a savings of more than $100 versus purchasing a new copy of
the full, standard textbook and a MasteringChemistry access code that does not include the eText.
2) If you are comfortable using just an eText without having a hardcopy book, an alternative
option is to purchase the eText and MasteringChemistry directly from the publisher.
- Go to http://masteringchemistry.com/site/register/new-students.html
- On the website select “Register as a Student”.
- When asked “Do you have an access code?”, select “No, I need to purchase access online
now”, then select the McMurry/Fay 6e which is shown to the right.
- Select “Yes, please include the eText with my MasteringChemistry subscription” and
accept the License Agreement and Privacy Policy.
- The cost of MasteringChemistry-with-eText will be displayed. It was $110 as of 7/24/14.
3) A third option is to go somewhere else to buy a new or used copy of the textbook. You
will still need to purchase a new access code for MasteringChemistry. BE CAREFUL! If the
access code is bundled with a new copy of the textbook you should be okay. But beware
MasteringChemistry codes that come with a used textbook. A given access code can only be used
by one person / one email address. MasteringChemistry codes that have already been used by
someone else will not work. The safest place to purchase a new access code is from the
MasteringChemistry website listed above, only this time choose “No thanks” when asked about
purchasing the eText. After accepting the License Agreement and Privacy Policy, the cost of just
the MasteringChemistry access code will be displayed. It was $66 as of 7/24/14.
