The average pie is divided into six slices after it leaves the oven, and one was removed from the genre’s sales plate in first quarter-2015, compared with results from a year ago. Country album sales slid to 6.2 million from Dec. 29, 2014 through March 29, 2015, according to Nielsen Music. That represents a 16.7 percent decline — exactly one-sixth — from a year ago. Country track sales registered at 29.8 million for the period, also a 16.7 percent drop from 2014’s 35.8 million. In both cases, the results are bleaker than sales figures for the overall industry. The business as a whole racked up 60.6 million albums during the first quarter, down just 1.8 percent from 2014. Total track downloads fell 11 percent to 277.9 million. Streaming has often been cited as a major contributor to the tailspin, though what that means in a specific genre is tough to pin down: Nielsen does not break out online listening by format. Some of country’s album-sales performance during the first quarter is likely a result of a slim release schedule. Four of the top 10 titles from first-quarter 2014 were released during that period: Eric Church’s The Outsiders, Jennifer Nettles’ That Girl, Cole Swindell’s eponymous debut and Dierks Bentley’s Riser. By contrast, only one of the top 10 albums during the first three months of 2015 was released during the quarter: Luke Bryan’s Spring Break … Checkin’ Out, which finished No. 2 for the period with 137,000 sales. The No. 1 performer, Sam Hunt, ruled both country’s singles and album lists for the quarter. Montevallo, issued Oct. 27, outsold every other album in the genre at 199,000 units. “Take Your Time,” the second single from the set, was the best-selling country track at 619,000 units. “Time” was most certainly on Hunt’s side. It was downloaded 62 percent more often than the No. 2-selling country track: Zac Brown Band’s “Homegrown,” which registered 381,000 downloads. Blake Shelton’s “Lonely Tonight,” a collaboration with Ashley Monroe, amassed 316,000 virtual sales to finish No. 3. Meanwhile, controversy aided Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush.” Despite numerous media reports to the contrary, the song increased airplay substantially in recent weeks, and it jumped 4-1 on Country Digital Songs. It finished the quarter as country’s HUNT fourth-best-selling track, with its 291,000 downloads pushing it slightly ahead of a crowded pack. “Girl Crush,” Swindell’s “Ain’t Worth the Whiskey,” Lee Brice’s “Drinking Class” and Florida Georgia Line’s “Sun Daze” occupy Nos. 4-7, separated by only 905 units. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2015, Arbitron Inc.). Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 102 stations, ranked by total plays. BULLETS l Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week. TIES On Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first. RECURRENTS On Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks. HOT SHOT DEBUT Awarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively. MOST ADDED The total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.
