To celebrate our 55th season, we present a season of concerts each designed to highlight powerful endings to moving pieces that can only be described as “colossal.” At each concert, you’ll hear these “Power Chords” from all over the world. Monumental works from our favorite Russians — Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Mussorgsky — combine with American music from “West Side Story” and “The Red Violin.” Our film night series continues with a highlight show featuring music from the spy genre. Into that mix, we add Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony and Mahler’s Fifth. All in all, a towering season to fill the Fox Theatre with pageantry and the “Power Chords” from more than 80 musicians assembled to bring the house down. Shostakovich: Piano Concerto No. 2 Steven Lin, piano Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition What did you give your son or daughter for graduation? Shostakovich wrote this cheerful and bright concerto for his son to perform. Audience favorite, Steven Lin, returns to solo and the concert closes with the thrilling “Pictures at an Exhibition.” This is the concert everyone will be talking about. Tan Dun: YouTube Symphony No. 1 “Eroica” Mason Bates: Desert Transport Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 Old and new meet in March, with Beethoven’s “Eroica” combined with short works from two of today’s hottest living composers. Tan Dan’s “You Tube Symphony” is directly inspired by this very Beethoven work and also bears the subtitle “Eroica.”. November 22 Final Chords Tchaikovsky: Marche Slave Elgar: Cello Concerto Cicely Parnas, cello Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 Elgar ended his composing career with this stunning and moving concerto. Tchaikovsky ended his own career with his final orchestral opus, full of triumph and resignation. With these two contrasting works, two musical titans show how to “make an exit.” February 21 Great Movies/Great Music Cloak and Dagger Our film series continues with music from the spy films. Something for everyone with hit songs from the “James Bond” series to classic themes from great espionage cinema from “Mission: Impossible” to “North By Northwest.” April 18 Colossal Collage Sibelius: Finlandia Corigliano: Chaconne from “Red Violin” Lindsay Deutsch, violin Mahler: Symphony No. 5 Everyone knows Beethoven’s great Fifth, but our season closes with what is arguably the “other” great Symphony No. 5.
