Arts Center of Yates County Volume 41 Issue 1 January and February 2015 ACYC Officers Elected, Honored At a holiday gathering of the Board of Directors, Daniel Crozet was honored for having been at the reins of the organization through the important years of purchasing our building, doing the renovations, making our move to Main Street, and finally installing the elevator. He has devoted untold hours to oversight of many committees and activities of the organization. Here he is seen with the gift presented to him by the board. Thanks to all the hard work and planning undertaken by the volunteers on our many committees we have a host of exciting activities scheduled for the new year, including the Arts Center’s first “juried” art show and a “small works” show that will help raise funds for planned improvements to our lakeside facility, Sunny Point. We’ll present workshops by regionally and nationally recognized artists as well as offering an eclectic range of creative classes including the culinary arts, fiber arts, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, photography, more. We’ve put the finishing touches on our Main Street Arts Center and are looking now at making Sunny Point the community asset we believe it can be. The first phase of improvements to the property will create a seasonal ceramics studio in the old boathouse and expand our classroom space in the “red (studio) barn.” We’re excited about welcoming new applicants for our artist in residency program and looking forward to organizing some lakeside “give art a try” events to give everyone the opportunity to enjoy this special facility. The new year is full of possibilities. We hope you’ll work with us as well to turn old dreams into reality and create new dreams for the future. “You are a good dream,” said the king. “I hope you will go on dreaming.” T.H. Next New Show Opening Sun. Feb. 8, 3-5 PM: “Cabin Fever” From the New ACYC President – It’s always nice to start a new year by reflecting on the old and then preparing for the new. At the Arts Center we certainly have much to be grateful for when we reflect on 2014. A great team of volunteers kept us up and running in just our second full year on Main Street – promoting (and selling!) the work of a growing number of talented local and regional artists. We offered more creative workshops in more artistic mediums than ever before and, thanks to some wonderful partnerships, reached out to the community at large in new and meaningful ways. And to top it all off, we were able to install an elevator that ensures accessibility for everyone to all that our building has to offer. I’m excited to start 2015 as the new board president of this vibrant organization. Our dedicated board of directors has put together a three year strategic plan for the Arts Center that will keep us moving forward – establishing new partnerships, broadening our reach within the community and promoting the incredible work being done by our artists to a much larger audience through enhanced electronic communications. We’ll also be focusing on our lakefront facility – Sunny Point – in the coming year. There’s terrific potential for that property and we’re looking forward to seeing the inspiration that comes from doing art in such a wonderful setting. We’re also looking forward to seeing you as we continue to progress into a new year filled with so many possibilities. We welcome your ideas, your support and your participation. This is, after all, YOUR community Arts Center. For those who aren’t aware, for the last four years the Arts Center has offered the opportunity for artists from around the country to spend ten days “in residence” at our lakeside facility, Sunny Point. The applicants apply for a July or September session and the residencies are awarded on a competitive basis. Electronic Version of Perspectives Saves The Arts Center’s new on-line version of Perspectives is an evolving and dynamic new initiative. This is the second issue of our beloved newsletter to be delivered on-line and we’re just beginning to explore the ways that the electronic version can serve our members and our organization—allowing readers to “click through” to learn more about the stories in the newsletter, artists and business members; providing opportunities for the inclusion of more interactive elements like Daniel Crozet’s Arts Center update slide shows; coming to you in full color on every page and saving the Arts Center money that can be used for programming, services, workshops, and to enhance our facilities. We recognize that many people like to have a “hard copy” in hand, but when you consider the savings and how can be used to benefit our community through the arts, we hope you will opt for an electronic version. How it breaks down --- Perspectives is produced and distributed six times a year. With the print version, generally mailed only to members, ARC has been printing, folding and bulk mailing about 550 newsletters every two months. Each edition costs about $500, not including the “in house printing” of the color page that’s usually inserted. If all our members opted for the electronic version, the Arts Center would save $3,000 per year! Printing costs for a smaller number of newsletters don’t seem that burdensome, but, not surprisingly, mailing hard copy newsletters to a relatively small number of members more than triples the amount we’re paying in postage! So each hard copy issue costs the Arts Center $1.25 to print and mail—or about $7.50 per person. That certainly doesn’t seem like much—until you start multiplying by how many people want hard copy. For every 100 members who switch to receiving the newsletter on-line, we save $750 a year! We hope you’ll help us not only save money but take advantage of the easy opportunity to spread the word by forwarding the electronic version of Perspectives on to your friends.
