NO EATING, DRINKING, CHEWING GUM, OR APPLYING MAKE-UP IN LAB! If you know or suspect that you may be at increased risk of infection due to pregnancy, autoimmune disease, cancer, recent surgery or positive HIV status, it is your responsibility to inform your health care provider that you are taking microbiology lab. Lab work: During each lab exercise, I will instruct you to record some data, answer questions, or make drawings of specimens. Lab work is due the following week. Since labs cannot be made up, your lab grade will drop by at least 5 points for each lab you miss. Lab Quizzes: There is a lab quiz most weeks (with the exception of the 1st week). Missed lab quizzes may not be made up, but your 2 lowest lab quiz grades will be dropped. Missed lab work and lab exercises may not be made up. It may be in your longterm best interest to take micro another semester and I may ask for a note from your doctor authorizing you to take micro. 9. Cover scratches on hands with a bandage (we have some) and then a glove. 10. Never pipette by mouth. 11. Dispose of used slides and broken glass in the white plastic “sharps” box that I will point out. 12. If you spill something, please notify me immediately. Same if a part falls off your microscope. 13. Keep test tubes upright in racks. Keep cultures covered if you are not using them. 14. Contaminated test tubes: remove tape and place in racks on discard counter. Contaminated Petri dishes, swabs, or gloves: toss in autoclave bag. Lab Syllabus Acknowledgement I am aware that there are risks involved in performing microbiology lab procedures and that I will be working with potentially hazardous chemicals and living microorganisms. If I suspect I am at increased risk of infection, I agree to notify my health care provider that I am taking microbiology lab and my instructor so accommodations can be made, if possible. I have read the lab safety information and rules and comprehend their importance. I will employ proper techniques at all times while working in the lab in order to minimize the dangers. If a procedure is unclear, I will ask my instructor for clarification.
