Fundamentals of Physics CD-ROM, from Physics 111 or 105/106 Pre-requisites and Co-requisites: ! ! ! Phys 105/106 or Phys 111, and Math 111 (Calculus I) are prerequisites. Calculus will be used during this course. The laboratory course, Physics 121A must be taken concurrently unless you have taken it previously and passed it. The Lab manual (Physics Laboratory Manual II) can be downloaded from the Physics web site at http://physics.njit.edu/classes/physlab/. If you drop the course you must drop the lab - no exceptions. Physics 121A is otherwise a separate course from Physics 121. Students will receive separate grades for them, and the Lab instructor sets the requirements and grading policy in Phys 121A Lab. Withdrawal from either course will cause a simultaneous withdrawal from both courses. Attendance: ! All students must register for and attend the lecture, the recitations, and also a section of the laboratory course. There is no workshop for Physics 111. ! Attendance at lectures and recitation classes is mandatory. Instructors will take attendance at all classes. The Dean of Freshman Studies Office will be notified if a student misses a total of 3 lecture and recitation classes. Students with absences should discuss the reasons for the absences with the Dean of Freshman Studies. Students who accumulate three unexcused absences may be dropped from the course, in which case they will be notified in writing by the Dean's office. ! Assignments: You are responsible for all weekly text and problem assignments listed in the outline. ! ! ! ! ! ! Read each assigned textbook section before the Lecture covering the material in it Solve each of the all of the homework problems assigned (about ten per week on the average). Each week the homework problems marked with an asterisk (*) will be collected during the lecture following the lecture in which the material is covered and returned graded. Late work may be rejected or reduced in grade. It is almost impossible to succeed in this course without faithfully doing problems - the more, the better. Do as many of the problems as you can before the recitation after the material is introduced in lecture so that you will get the most out of those sessions. Homework will count for about 1/12 (8.3%) of your final grade in the course. Study Groups: Students have found it very helpful to form small groups that study and do homework together. Talking about the concepts, logic, problem-solving methods, etc. with others makes it much easier to learn. Much of the problem-solving must still be individual, though, as will performance on the exams. Lecture Quizzes: Short lecture quizzes will be given frequently, usually during each lecture and covering the work of the preceding week. ! ! Lecture quiz performance will count for about 1/12 (8.3%) of your final grade. As a general rule, no make-up quizzes will be given. Common and Final Examinations: ! ! There will be three Common Exams. Each of them will be worth about 1/6 of your final grade (50% for all three). They will consist of some long answer and some multiple-choice questions. The multiple-choice problems will still require calculation. You will be allowed to bring formula sheets to all the exams. The Final Examination will be worth about 1/3 of your final grade. Exam Schedule: ! ! ! ! Common Exam 1: Friday, October 4 -Common Exam 2: Friday, November 1 -Common Exam 3: Friday, November 22 -Final Exam: Comprehensive, given during December 13 to 8:30 – 9:50 am 8:30 – 9:50 am 8:30 – 9:50 am 19 Exam Period Grading: The final grade will be determined by a composite score that weights each common exam as 1/6 (16.7%) each, the total lecture/recitation quizzes as 1/12 (8.3%), the homework also as 1/12, and the final exam as 1/3 (33.3%). Extra credit may be given occasionally for solutions of additional problems (to be announced during lectures), for an active participation in the class, etc. Negative credit may be given for being late, creating noise and otherwise interfering with the work of the class. Honor Code Violations/Disruptive Behavior: NJIT has a zero-tolerance policy regarding cheating of any kind and student behavior that is disruptive to a learning environment. Any incidents will be immediately reported to the Dean of Freshman Studies. When Honor Code violations are detected, the punishments range from a minimum of failure in the course plus disciplinary probation up to expulsion from NJIT with notations on students' permanent record. Avoid situations where your own honorable behavior could be misinterpreted. Physics Learning Center: The Physics Learning Center is available for students who need more attention than the other classes provide. It is located on the fourth floor of Faculty Memorial Hall, is staffed by faculty and specially trained Teaching Assistants. The location and times the Physics Learning Center is open will be announced. All students are welcome to go to the Physics Learning Center for help with physics.
