The athletic world gathers in Duisburg – or as we prefer to say it: amongst friends with heart.
No matter if it’s for the World
Games 2005, whether the 2006 Italian Football World Cup
Champions call it home or the international water sports scene gathers here – Duisburg scores high with first class sports venues and an enthusiastic crowd. But the people from Rhine and Ruhr don’t just get fired up when the Zebras from MSV Duisburg or their colleagues from FCR chase after goals or when the ice hockey Foxes from EVD glide across the ice – they themselves are active in more than 450 clubs.
The athletic heart of our city beats in Wedau with its famous, scenic regatta course and its expansive water ski installation. It is now possible for every enthusiast to practise their sport and imitate their idols at the same place where world championships were decided.
Those who prefer things a bit more extreme can dive right in at the
Landscape Park Duisburg-North – at one time smelting works that have now been decommissioned – to the bottom of the old
Gasometer or climb a cliff inside the former ore bunkers.
Perhaps you prefer to bike, inline skate or “boßel” through green meadows and explore exhilarating abandoned industrial areas?
Duisburg has many faces:
If you want to experience big, small or just plain unusual animals, cuddly Koala bears and rare River Dolphins close up, then a visit to the Duisburg Zoo is an absolute must. In addition to numerous unique attractions, it offers “animally” interesting excursions, events and attractions for all ages.
For those of you who still haven’t run out of steam at the end of the day or would prefer to combine fitness with a way of life, our city’s cultural and gastronomical scene holds many more interesting discoveries in store for you. You are always heartily invited to join in.
Do something good for yourself!
Experience our region actively and from a somewhat different perspective.

Dear friends of sport, culture and fun!
As you all know I am a true “Brandenburgerin” at heart. Thanks to my sport
I have the opportunity to travel often.
Duisburg has always brought me a great deal of luck. It was here that as a 17 year old I won the world championship for the first time in the kayak fours. It was here as well where
I qualified for my sensational comeback for the Olympic Games in
Athens. After winning my medals in
Athens, I have now set my sights on
Peking 2008. Today, I am still training with great passion despite being over forty.
My motto: Live and experience – that’s the new spirit of the times in our hectic lives in an urbanised information society. Even more important are outdoor trends for active leisure activities where a balance is maintained between nature and culture.
This is important for mind, body and soul, but also encourages environmental compatibility in aquatic, animal and plant conservation.
Experiencing our habitat with all of our senses and with all of the possibilities it offers – this is what I advocate in Brandenburg. I am delighted in the fact that the City of Duisburg, being a city open to the world of sports, has recognised this trend as well. Here the conditions are not only excellent for water sports at the Inland
Port, the Six Lakes area and the rivers
Rhine and Ruhr. Other sports are also ideal for actively experiencing the fascinating industrial settings, enchanting landscapes, interesting museums and a diverse selection of restaurants.
Allow yourself to be “moved” by a fascinating region!
Yours,
Birgit Fischer
27-time World Champion,
2-time European Champion,
8 Olympicmedals in kayak racing,
Female athlete of the year 2004

The Ruhr River valley – on the sunny side of the Ruhr River region
More than 217 kilometres of romantic waterfront, far from industry and development, invite bicyclists, hikers and skaters alike. But the
Ruhr River valley can also be explored by ship.
Unbelievably beautiful is the “Kaiser-Route”, where you can - would you believe it - discover palaces, castles, monasteries, mansions, grinding mills and ship locks. www.dasruhrtal.de
Landscape Park Duisburg-
North, adventure land for big and small: Admission is free and it’s always open
One-of-a-kind adventure park on approximately 200 hectares. The former
Thyssen AG smelting works offer a complete cosmos of the most diverse leisure time possibilities: Europe’s largest artificial diving waters in the Gasometer for divers; climbing gardens in the ore bunkers for the alpine enthusiasts; a skate oval, a halfpipe, a beach volleyball court, a street soccer area and a mountain bike course for the hip sports enthusiast; a giant tube slide and the
“Ingenhamshof” educational farm for city kids.
Hike or ride hired bicycles through breathtaking scenery on historical industrial paths, climb a blast furnace up to a height of
70 metres. For culture and
event freaks, extraordinary playgrounds await that are masterfully set in motion by spectacular events – from product presentations to visits by heads of states.
Every year the international crowd takes notice: The world music “Dreamtime-
Festival” and the “Ruhr
River Triennale”. The
Diebels Open-Air Cinema – the only one of its kind with a mobile roof – offers films with cult status. Park restaurants and a youth hostel invite guests to linger on even after sunset when the light
show at Jonathan
Park envelops this industrial setting in mystical lights.

A journey through the animal kingdom
Duisburg’s zoo was originally established as an animal park in 1934. Since then, it has made a name for itself worldwide. The first European inland Dolphinarium opened here in 1965. These friendly mammals are still attracting zoo enthusiasts from afar.
A common favourite: the buildings containing the world’s only litter of cuddly
Koala bears. But the Kodiak bears, the areas with the big cats and the free-form habitats with the gorillas are always visitor magnets.
The Chinese Garden with its flora and fauna is a
“growing” testimony of the city partnership between
Duisburg and Wuhan.
The ”Rio Negro Tropics
House” has accommodated rare fresh water dolphins from the Amazon-Region since September 2005.

Never heard of “Boßeln”?
Despite of its many similarities with other sports
(boules, skittles, bowling, boccia etc.), there is no comparison to the discipline of the “Boßel”-sport. “Boßeln” actually is a traditional
Friesian folk sport according to the motto: the Friesian first learns to walk and then to “boßeln”.
But in the Netherlands,
Ireland, Italy and certain areas of the USA where
Friesians have settled as well, you will find people enjoying a game of
“boßeln”. A little open landscape, a trail, a path, a street – that’s all it takes to get a game going.
At the very beginning the
“boßel-balls” – also called
“Kloote” – were made from heavy wood. But don’t worry, today “Kloote” are fashioned from synthetic materials. During the
“boßel”-game you get to set the speed and your engagement level. And if you should get hooked on the game, you may even want to compete in the “Boßel” championships.
Organised as a tournament, with wood cart catering and a victory ceremony
The Programme
Do you prefer having fun over exercising?
And do you believe that “sport kills”? Let the others bother with canoes, water skis, in-line skates or mountain climbing – there still is no need for you to stay at home!
There is “boßeln” after all. It’s not what you think: cheering others on or closely observing them and pointing out their mistakes.
No, no, this sport, where you can “work on your slow ball” , is an invention by the East Friesians.
And they pronounce “Boßeln” with a long „o“ and not a short one like in the word “boss”.
„Boßeln” is fun in any weather, at any age and with any sociable crowd. While you’re taking turns throwing the ball, you will also move through nature on a course you have set for yourself. And to make sure you’ll never go hungry, get cold or die of thirst, there is always a handcart loaded with hearty drinks nearby. It’s the perfect way to transition into the more relaxing part of the day…
