ARCHIMEDES Archimedes is a well known scientist and mathematician from the ancient world. He was known as the wise one, the master, and a great geographer. His most famous and popular invention, is the death ray. Archimedes was not only a famous Ancient Greece mathematician he was also a doctor, astronomer and an engineer. Some of his most famous inventions include the Archimedes screw and the death ray. Some of his other inventions include the lever and the iron claw. Archimedes was born in 287 B.C. in the port of Syracuse, Sicily in the colony of Magna Graecia (this area is now known as Italy). His father was Phidias, who was an astronomer. It is believed that Archimedes is related to Hiro ||. (The king of Syracuse) Archimedes parents always encouraged him to go and get an education so he could be knowledgable when he was older therefore he started school when he was eight years old. Besides maths and science his other major interests included: poetry, politics, astronomy, music, art and military tactics. Due to the Second Punic War, Archimedes sadly passed away in 212 B.C.
