The History of Les Senteurs
Three decades ago Betty and Michael Hawksley had a revolutionary idea destined to change the face of British perfumery.
They realised that there was no advice available in the conventional department stores, and only limited choice
if you wanted something unusual in fine fragrances and scented goods. So the concept of Les Senteurs was born.
Les Senteurs is proud to lay claim to having been the first shop in the UK to stock the complete ranges of the
now legendary brands of Annick Goutal, Creed and Diptyque. More recently Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle,
Mona di Orio, Parfumerie Generale, and Tauer Perfumes have all chosen to debut their brands at Les Senteurs.
From perfume classics and half-forgotten masterpieces produced by classic European perfume houses to those made
by contemporary artisan perfumers, Les Senteurs houses an unrivalled collection of scents and scented products.
Les Senteurs remains an intimate family business today and continues to be run with the same ethos and passion.
The shop is able to offer excellent personal service as well as expert impartial advice. Our products are mainly from
smaller companies, often owned by perfumers who tend to use higher concentrations of natural essences and high
quality raw ingredients. Above all, the aim of Les Senteurs is to assist you in discovering the delights of perfuming
yourself and your surroundings.
At our boutique in the heart of London’s Belgravia and now at our second shop in historic Portman Village we aim
to provide a relaxed and stimulating atmosphere in which customers may experiment and discover the fascinating
and inspiring world of scent. Our reputation has made Les Senteurs a place of pilgrimage for perfume connoisseurs,
enthusiasts and collectors. Through our mail order and internet service we are also able to offer our unique skills to
thousands of perfume lovers throughout the UK, Europe and the whole world.

Aquatic
Quirky modern sub-group which uses a variety of natural
and synthetic oils to introduce a suggestion of the sea, lakes,
rivers and streams to the top and middle notes of a perfume.
Chypre
Named after Francois Coty’s prototype “Chypre” (1917) which
commemorated the perfume history of the island of Cyprus.
Long lasting, warm, mossy, soft dark scents. Very sophisticated,
urban and elegant. Generally chypres feature sharp, green top
notes and floral hearts which soften to bases of oakmoss, amber,
leather, vetiver, patchouli and sandalwood.
Florals
Bouquets of flowers - tuberose, roses, lily, jasmine, lilac, lily of the
valley, ylang-ylang, violets, orange blossom etc. Fresh, sweet, feminine.
Fruity
Mostly florals and greens enlivened with notes of soft sweet fruits –
peach, apricot, plum, pineapple, prune, and raspberry.

Green
Fresh floral, sometimes herbal/mossy scents dominated by leafy,
grassy, crisp notes. Sharp, clear, clean, invigorating.
Hesperidic / Citrus
Lemon, bergamot, neroli, petitgrain, tangerine, grapefruit, cedar,
syringa and lime. Reviving and refreshing.
Leather/Tobacco
Rich, dark, smoky, deep, spicy notes usually intensified or contrasted
with green, floral or animalic oils.
Oriental
Warm, rich, exotic, intense, spicy dramatic notes, often based
on amber, vanilla, incense with florid floral top notes.
Woody/Fougere
Full-bodied, green, dark, aromatic notes of cedar, sandal, juniper,
birchwood, rosewood, ebony, patchouli, oakmoss, lavender, clary sage.

Yearning for a new fragrance but feeling overwhelmed by the choice?
Why not choose from home, in peace and at leisure? Up to 4 samples
of any of the fragrances listed here may be obtained for a service charge
of between £3.50 and £5.00 each (depending on the particular scent).
There will then be a further postal charge of £3.00 on all sample orders
through the website or via mail order. Please do not make multiple
sample orders for the same fragrance. Samples are decanted into vials
and fastened to a Les Senteurs branded card detailing the fragrance

Sunshine and Pancakes
A radiant family day on the beach recreated as a perfume for
Sarah's mother-in-law. Brilliantly crisp lemon top notes lead the
nose into a sweet smooth heart of jasmine blended with absolutes
of honey and vanilla. The base uses warm cedar to prolong the
happiness of a long carefree day on the sands.
The Lion Cupboard
Sarah recreated the redolence of her father's clothes press in this
medley of masculine scents including juniper (think of a well-iced
gin and tonic), mint, aniseed, lavender, patchouli and golden
helichrysum. Dark, deep, and reassuring.

Aromatic raspberry leaf combines with geranium,
violet and rose and the citrus sparkle of tangerine

The first creation by London based Canadian, Matthew Zhuk, Creative Director of Ex Idolo. What makes Thirty Three truly
remarkable is the blend of ouds that lie at the base of its composition, mainly a rare, vintage oud that has been aging since 1980.
Thirty Three
Hand blended and bottled in Marylebone, London. Thirty Three
begins with a lively blend of black pepper and candied mandarin,
before unfolding into a bewitchingly dark heart of roses, orris
and tea and revealing the remarkable dry quality of the 33 year
aged oud.

black pepper, aromatic iris, resins and herbs. Carbonised timber
with a creamy note of fresh sandalwood makes up the base.
The sweet freshness of rose and the golden warmth of
saffron darkens into soft musk and woods: patchouli,
oak and leather meld with powdery orris.
2He Helium

Angélique
Soft, radiant and the pinnacle of sophistication. A glowing chypre
which looks back to the Golden Age of perfumes while displaying
audacious modern touches. With cypress wood, cedar, hawthorn,
cedar, mimosa, osmanthus, champac jasmine and a great glowing
heart of soft opulent orris.
Tobacco Rose
A huge billowing oriental chypre of vast presence and
imagination. Full-blown summer roses on the verge of dissolution
and decay. Tremendous depth and sillage. Bulgarian and centifolia
rose oil; oakmoss, beeswax, hay, amber, galbanum and geranium
bourbon.
Anubis
The Egyptian god of embalming; the benevolent jackal-headed
god. His perfume plunges into dark infernal depths of spices,
woods and mysterious smoky resins. Pink lotus, jasmine,
immortelles, frankincense, myrrh and saffron. Suede, castoreum,
labdanum, benzoin, opoponax, bitter orange, ylang ylang.

of Asiatic spices such as clove, coriander and cinnamon soaked in

Incense Extreme
Magnificently intense oriental fougere which starts with a
flamboyant green top note of coriander and petitgrain before

The opening notes are a golden blaze of mandarin and clementine
which yield to a sensuous base of dark vanilla, tonka bean and

Une Rose Vermeille

TOM DAXON
Tom Daxon is one of the brightest young names in British perfumery. He works with independent perfumers Jacques and
Carla Chabert, a father and daughter team whom Tom has known since childhood and who have created for names such as Chanel
and Guerlain.
Cologne Absolute
A stunning cologne mixed to eau de parfum strength. Neroli,
bergamot, tarragon, lemon petitgrain and violet leaf herald
a heart of jasmine and lily of the valley on a woody patchouli base.
Crushing Bloom
A glorious, spicy, sparkling rose with gloriously crisp green top
notes of muguet, cardamom and pepper segue into jasmine
sambac and silky powdery iris. A traditional theme re-invented
with modern youthful audacity and 21st century skills.
Iridium
Tom’s conception of charcoal grey cashmere: silky-soft with a
silvery sheen. The fragrance is based on a heart of precious orris,
perfumery's most costly ingredient, with details sketched in
with juniper, angelica, carrot seed, vetiver and dry fragrant cedar.

Resin Sacra
An exploration of frankincense and enhanced with other
resins such as benzoin and cistus. Patchouli, sandalwood
and frankincense blend with notes of powdery ambroxan and

Reverie
A paradox of contrasting sensation, Reverie leads you through
an exotic but familiar landscape of memory: cool and dry, then
rich and warm. Herbal top notes of rosemary, ginger, elemi and
artemisia develop into a heart of iris supported by oud, bezoin
and amber accords.
Salvia Sclarea
Lying in long cool grass in a hot sunny herb garden. Top notes
of new grass, sweet violet leaf and elemi melt into a core of clary
sage and delicate white jasmine supported by the earthiness of
oakmoss and warm accords of woody musks.
Vachetta
A dissection of all the facets of fine leather. Smoky, dark,
mysterious and sexy but with an innocent bright jasmine heart
for piquant contrast. Top notes of coriander, cardamom and
nutmeg which blend with deeper accords of Lapsang Souchong
tea and gaiac wood.
VSOP
Redolent of an excellent cognac: luxurious, seductive, indolent.
Green citric top notes of geranium and cognac simmer down
into an oriental heart of elemi, pink and black pepper, ginger
and cinnamon.
Sicilian Wood
The sumptuous succulent fragrance of a Sicilian citrus grove
warmed in the Italian sunshine. Lemon, tangerine and
bergamot are enhanced with green cardamom with a floral
heart of jasmine and muguet. The seductive base features
the grandeur of amber, cedar and sandalwood.

AMOUAGE
From the Royal Kingdom of Oman, magnificent perfumes of great opulence, distinction and rare beauty. Amouage was established
by the Omani royal family in 1983 to redefine and restore the art of native Arabian perfumery.

Inspired by the exquisite original eighteenth century colognes made by the Italian perfumers of Koln. This range is the brainchild
of Sylvie Ganter (formerly of Hermes) and Christopher Cervasel.
NEW! Cedrat Enivrant
Created by Master Perfumer Ralph Schwieger, Cedrat Enivrant
is the evocation of a sparkling evening of French 75 cocktails.
Cedrat Enivrant’s opening is all citrus, with slightly bitter cedrat,
lime and bergamot, before moving into a striking heart of mint,
basil and juniper, grounded in a warm comfortable base of tonka
and vetiver.
NEW! Mistral Patchouli
Notes of star anise, pepper and geranium leaf blended with the
greenness of unripe grapefruit, vetiver and patchouli. Iris gives
a dry powderiness which enhances the dark fresh subtlety of
benzoin and patchouli. Sophisticated, bracing and crisply clean.

Ambre Nue
A soft transparent amber enhanced with labdanum, benzoin,
