Fairview Center Builds Healthy Families in High Point Antwan (pictured) is an 8th grade student who enjoys visiting Family Service’s Fairview Family Resource Center (FFRC). Antwan attends the Center daily to work on homework, play games and enjoy time with friends in a safe and healthy environment. Antwan is the youngest of three brothers. He loves to play basketball and baseball. He has dreams of attending Harvard or UNC-Chapel Hill and becoming a lawyer or a basketball player. At the FFRC, Antwan participates in Youth Leaders for Southside, a group whose activities include donating food and working on projects to help make the community better. The FFRC is a place where Family Service of the Piedmont’s vision – building safe and healthy families – becomes concrete. The Center serves low-income families in the Fairview Elementary School District through community-based programs and services. The major goals of the FFRC are to increase parenting skills, prepare children to enter and succeed in school, improve overall family functioning, and create a safe and healthy environment throughout the community. The FFRC served 436 children and adults last year. 96% of the FFRC participants report improved knowledge of preventing child abuse and neglect. The FFRC offers a full range of educational programs and activities for parents and children. Services include parenting groups, after school and summer activities, case management and character building classes for teens. For some children, it is the only option, other than being unsupervised, where they can go and have a safe place to spend their time. Throughout the year, the FFRC hosts a variety of character development programs for Southside neighborhood children. Antwan is one of many boys who attended the Boys Night Out event this June, sponsored by POLO Ralph Lauren. The night was designed especially for boys in the neighborhood to do things together that interest them. “It’s a time for bonding and an event that is meant to really make them feel special,” says Donita Williams, Outreach Specialist and Case Manager with the FFRC. POLO employees served hot dogs and played games with the kids. The boys were treated to a talk by a male Polo employee who stressed how important it was to be responsible, stay in school and be accountable for your own actions. The FFRC also hosted a Girl’s Night Out for the young ladies of Southside. The girls came together to eat, dance and get pampered by stylists, manicurists and beauty consultants. Stylists from Tazz & Co. Hair Design Studio did the girls’ hair. Veronica Quick, Owner of Serenity Styling Salon, talked about hair care and provided goodie bags. Tracey Fields-Hedrick, Mary Kay Consultant and Sales Director, provided information about skin care. Dr. Sebrina CookeDavis, Parenting Educator with Family Life Council, talked to the girls about promoting self-confidence and speaking positive words about themselves. One young lady in attendance stated, “I learned how to love myself and have self-esteem.” “Both events were very well attended and a great success,” states FFRC Program Manager Andrea Dalporto. “Boys and Girls Night Out provides a safe place for the Southside youth. In addition to being fun, the youth learn life-long skills that may help them find success in the future.” Back to School: Talk to Your Kids About Bullying Bullying can happen to anyone. Statistics show one in five children admits to being bullied at school. Bullying can affect a child’s school performance as well as their social and emotional development. With a new school year upon us, bullying may be a concern for your child. Family Service of the Piedmont’s Director of Counseling Services Theresa Johnson offers advice on talking to your kids about bullying and tips on what to do if your child is a victim of bullying at school. “Children need to feel empowered to be able to tell someone if they’re being bullied,” Johnson says. “Parents need to give their children the skills to prevent bullying from happening, by teaching them confidence and self-assurance. Like a child predator, bullies pray on children who are unassuming and won’t speak up for themselves. Kids have to be careful with whining or being meek because there’s always a bully looking for a victim.” Continued on page 2 2 family service of the piedmont inc. Message from the President You’ve heard of “Christmas in July.” Well, I’m celebrating “Thanksgiving in August” due to the overwhelming gratitude that I feel for our directors, trustees, community supporters and staff. As we end our 2011-12 fiscal year, the agency is in a very different position than a couple of years ago. Like many nonprofits, Family Service of the Piedmont struggled in recent years due to the downturn in the economy. Fortunately, thanks to the guidance of our Board of Directors and Boards of Trustees, we were able to turn this economic threat into many opportunities. We knew that to weather this storm, it would take a combination of sound fiscal management and increased efforts at fundraising. We also had to examine all our programs and outcomes to ensure the funds we receive were having the greatest possible impact. I am very happy to report that these efforts are seeing results - our agency is in a solid financial position, we are mission-focused, and the outlook is optimistic. The level of support we received this year from the Greensboro, High Point and Jamestown communities has been amazing. We wrapped up successful Annual Campaigns (see donor list beginning on page 5) and we enjoyed a phenomenal Greensboro Oyster Roast, which surpassed even last year’s record-breaking event in terms of attendance and money raised (see story on page 3). The 2012 Jamestown Pig Pickin’ likewise broke records and took this fledgling event to new heights in its third year (see story on page 4). I am immensely grateful to everyone who helped plan and organize these wonderful events, or who gave money or goods to support them. Family Service is increasingly dependent on money we raise ourselves through fundraisers such as these. Both our Oyster Roasts and the Pig Pickin’ have become so popular and well established, I am confident we will continue to see great things from these events in future years. These efforts of our boards and our community supporters are truly making a difference in the lives of children and families throughout Guilford County and beyond. And of course our agency would not be what it is without the amazing staff of Family Service. I am always impressed by the dedication and professionalism exhibited by our staff as they provide high quality programs for our most vulnerable neighbors. So I say thank you to our staff, our boards, our supporters, and to all our friends like you. You give me great hope that 2012-13 will be another successful and effective year for Family Service of the Piedmont. Continued from page 1 It’s important for parents to speak to their children about what different forms of bullying may look like. Bullying can include not only physical intimidation but also verbal and relational abuse. Being left out of a certain group and having rumors or lies spread about you are indirect forms of bullying. Cyber bullying is a growing form of bullying which can oftentimes be more hurtful; kids may be crueler online when they don’t have to face their target in person. Johnson emphasizes the importance of achieving a peaceful resolution while still standing up for yourself and not letting someone run over you. “Parents and schools have to get involved,” she says. The following are seven tips which Johnson encourages parents to discuss and even practice with their kids, to help prevent or put an end to the issue of bullying altogether: Seven Solutions to Bullying 1. Be assertive. Walk with awareness, calm, and confidence. 2. Donʼt put yourself in situations to be bullied. Simply walking away, stepping out of line or changing seats is often the safest choice. Set Boundaries. If you are in a situation where you cannot simply leave, set a clear boundary. Use a calm but clear voice and polite firm words. 4. Use Your Voice. Look the bully in the eye and speak in a firm voice saying “No!” “Stop!” or “I don't like that." Leave and go to an adult for help. 5. Donʼt let name calling or rejection get in the way of your happiness. 6. Be self-promoting and speak up for inclusion. Being left out is a major form of bullying. Parents, ask your child the reasons that kids give for excluding him or her. Use those reasons so your child can practice persisting. For example, if the reason is, "You're not good enough," your child can practice saying "I'll get better if I practice!" If the reason is, "There are too many already," your child might practice saying, "There's always room for one more." 7. Be persistent about telling someone. Family Service of the Piedmont is available to give anti-bullying workshops for children. A joint venture between Family Service’s Greensboro Foundation and The Guild of Family Service of Greensboro, this year’s Oyster Roast featured food by The Painted Plate and music from The Magnificents. The event presented by New Breed Logistics surpassed all previous agency expectations in terms of attendance, popularity, and fundraising success. The Oyster Roast netted proceeds of more than $175,000 to help support programs of Family Service in Greensboro. Chairs Dixie Culver and Phyllis Lancaster were quick to recognize the influence of past Oyster Roasts, as well as the additional efforts put in by this year’s supporters. “The venue was fundamental in making this a success,” said Culver. “Our Home Hosts were very hands-on, community oriented, and contributed much in both funds and fundraising skills. They went above and beyond what we could have ever asked. At the same time, last year’s Oyster Roast was so successful and well attended, everyone was excited to come back this year. Each year our committees and chairs have grown the event to where we are today. “ The Chairs also thanked Honorary Chair Kay Stern, Family Service and Greensboro Foundation Boards, and the hard-working Oyster Roast Committee made up of Guild members and volunteers from the community. “These ladies were ready to help at all times, with fundraising, signage, flowers, and so on,” Culver said. “It was amazing how helpful the committee was in getting everything together.” 200 couples and individuals from the Greensboro Community supported the event as Hosts. 125 more individuals and businesses were sponsors, including Platinum Sponsors Pace Communications, The Halstead Foundation, Kay Stern (Honorary Chair), VF Corporation, and Wells Fargo. (See box for full sponsor list.) Family Service is grateful to everyone who attended or supported the event. We look forward to another record-breaking Oyster Roast in 2013! This year’s event received rave reviews and gained community-wide attention by featuring the heart and soul of beach music band, The Embers. A combination of great music, delicious pork and chicken from BBQ Joe’s and wine tastings by local vineyards all contributed to an evening which people could not stop talking about. The event presented by TCDI raised $54,000 to support local programs of Family Service of the Piedmont. Mark Whitesell with Grand Rental Station served as Event Chair and led a committee of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers. Kathy Johnson and Tricia Seymour, with the decoration committee, transformed the historic grounds into a Tuscan paradise. Every detail, from the grape vine wrapped trellis to the hand-painted shutters at each entrance of the tent, added to the ambiance. Southern Roots Restaurant contributed a lovely appetizer assortment, Above and Beyond Catering provided sides and desserts and Natty Greene’s and R.H. Barringer donated beer. The ever popular silent auction, headed by Doug Susong and Jay McQuillan, was paired with a live auction led by auctioneer Billy Ragsdale. The combination of auctions was a huge hit and raised $9,000 An all-time record of 90 Host couples supported the event. “I think this was the best party I have ever attended,” stated Event Chair, Mark Whitesell. “It couldn't have happened without George and Jenny Ragsdale, a phenomenal energetic committee, and the hard working Family Service staff.” Whitesell concluded, “This same committee has agreed to do it next year.
