Questions and Answers
so You and Your Child are READY for High School
Question: What should I do if my child passed Algebra at Currie and is enrolled in it again?
Answer: If your child passed Algebra at Currie, contact your child’s counselor at the high school. They will tell you why your child is
enrolled again due to their California State Testing scores or their final grade in middle school Algebra. Be sure to contact them as soon as
possible to setup an appointment! Your child can challenge the class placement and request enrollment in Geometry.
Question: How does my child get back on track for A-G if he or she is enrolled in CAHSEE English or CAHSEE Math?
Answer: If your child is enrolled in CAHSEE English or Math, he or she can still be on track to complete their A-G requirements for
college admissions. If your child works hard to get out of the CAHSEE class, he or she can hopefully earn an elective the following year
and could begin the foreign language requirement.
Question: Who do I contact if my child is failing a class or multiple classes?
Answer: First, contact the teacher directly via telephone, e-mail or go straight to the office to setup an appointment. Next, if you are
not able to reach the teacher, contact your child’s counselor. As mentioned before, contact them right away! As soon as you have a
concern, reach out to the school. They will help you and there is always someone to assist you in Spanish if you need an interpreter 
Question: What happens if my child fails a class or earns a “D” grade? What can I do to help him or her get back on track?
Answer: If your child fails a class or earns a “D” grade, he or she can get back on track! If you see a “D” or “F” grade on your child’s
report card, contact the teacher to setup an appointment so you can find out why your child has that grade and how you can help your
child. If your child earns a “D” grade for his or her semester grade, the grade will have to be made up because colleges do not accept “D”
grades. Contact the counselor about the options to make up the grade. Some options are summer school and PLATO.
Question: Should my child sign up for summer school as an incoming freshman? What should he or she take? When is registration for
summer school?
Answer: As an incoming freshman, your child may be recommended to take summer school to increase their math skills. If that is the
case, be sure your child completes the paperwork, turns it in and attends summer school. This attendance is extremely important as it
can effect their high school plan. Information will be provided to you on when the summer school paperwork is due.
Question: Does my child still have to take Physical Education, PE, if he or she is enrolled in a sport?
Answer: If your child is in a sport, they will earn PE credit. If they participate in a sport all year (season for a semester and off season
for another semester) they will earn 10 PE credits. They will need either two years of PE or two years of a sport to earn the 20 PE credits
needed to graduate.
Question: What happens if my child starts to lose credits? What are the recovery options?
Answer: We cannot emphasis enough how important it is to communicate with the school. If you child starts to lose
credits, you need to contact the school immediately. Do not wait for them to call you to setup an appointment. There are
recovery options that include summer school and PLATO. If your child needs to make up credits and is required to take
summer school, it is CRITICAL that they complete the paperwork and attend regardless of other summer plans.
