June 2015
The first cannon shoot at COSSA Park went off with a BANG. Both Saturday and Sunday, May 23
& 24 were perfect days for a cannon shoot, comfortable temperature and only a slight wind with some overcast to keep the sun down. There were over 25 cannons from Oregon and all of the surrounding states. Cannon sizes went from the very small, 1”, to the larger up to bowling ball size.
The bowling ball mortars were the most fun to watch because you could watch the ball from when it left the muzzle until it hit the ground even though it went several hundred feet in the air and whistled all the way. Many of the cannons were full size replicas of the 1800 era and you would swear they just rolled off the Civil War battlefield. Others were miniature replicas down to the finest detail and you could not tell they were miniatures without some reference to size. There were also cannons designed and built by their owners that did not represent any historical cannons but just what the owner wanted to get that ball out there.
Saturday was the day to get your cannon sighted in and working right and there was much shooting going on. The targets were paper, and steel gongs for the cannons ranging from 100 to 700 yards and even an old outhouse for the mortars set at about
350 yards. Also a large military tank snuck in during the night and was peppered with shot, and the tank crew was so scared that they stayed buttoned up all day long. Many of the cannons had support personnel and family to help them out, along with some neophytes that wanted to learn the cannon business. Whenever a cannon was to be fired, the spectators and cannoneers were alerted by the shout
“FIRE IN THE HOLE, FIRE IN
THE HOLE” before each shot.

Redmond Mayor George Endicott will speak about the expected Cascadia Event, which they tell us will be an earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter Scale on the
Oregon Coast and a 7 in the Portland area. Such a quake would send people over the Cascades to Central Oregon for refuge. FEMA tells us that Redmond would be the staging area for relief efforts. Mayor Endicott has been learning about the situation and he has agreed to come speak to COSSA.

Sunday was the Official Match day and it was a busy one. Each cannon had to fire 10 shots for record at a target at a specific range. The range was determined by the size of the bore. Scoring was just like any shooting match, except the holes were a little easier to see at distance. The bowling ball mortars were judged by how close the ball came to the outhouse.
Both Saturday and Sunday were a full day of shooting and the spectators loved it. This shoot was not advertised outside the cannon group but there were many spectators and since other shoots were going on at COSSA Park, many of them came over to watch as well. I do not think many ranges can boast that they have a cannon shooting range, so this may be a real draw to COSSA Park in the future. Watch the COSSA calendar on our web site and the newsletter for announcement of future shoots.

COSSA RANGE, High Desert Country:
Latitude 44◦ 03’ north--121◦ 18’ west—hotter than Hades at times--colder than Boston at other times.
The Match started out peaceful like, with a subtle
Side Match called the
“Pistol Challenge”.
Shooters faced a five headed Spinning Wheel target as well as several other targets arranged at a reasonable distance (well at least to some). To hit all targets, shooters needed to expend twenty-five
(25) 45 ACP rounds, 10 rifle rounds, and 6 shotgun rounds. The top shooter did it in 30.37 seconds. The second place shooter was close behind at 32.44 seconds. The Crowd was left gasping for air. Someone was heard to say,
“stand-by folks, the action has just begun”.
The Pistol Challenge was not enough to satisfy
Match Director Sunrise Bill’s hunger for action.
Next Side Match was the TOUGH HOMBRE, requiring the staging of up to 4 firearms in adjacent bays, and running from one bay to the next to complete the scenario. Again, the top shooter stunned all spectators by dashing to victory in 58.59 seconds, while the second place shooter came-in at 73.51. Once the side matches were completed, and shooters cleaned their firearms and resupplied their ammo, it was time to face ten grueling stages over a two day period in temperatures hovering in the low 70’s—not bad at all—much better than Boston!
The ACP Brass began to fly almost immediately after Old Glory was saluted. Fortunately, four of our lady members volunteered not to shoot and instead, picked up brass and kept score on the club iPads. Honorable Brass Pickers and Score
Keepers were: Arctic Annie, Cascades Annie,
Sierra Sage Sue, and Diamond Willow. Design and construction of the Shooters Book as well as registration and all the paper work was accomplished by Stargazer Sal. A big thank you to all our volunteers, who did all the work
COSSA Bulletin 3 just mentioned, as well as preparing lunch and dinner on Saturday, and lunch on Sunday. Where would we be without our distaff help? Not here, that’s for sure. Didn’t Mark Twain say something like that?
The Club welcomed visiting shooter Bordello
Fellow, out of Fernley, Nevada, who attended the shoot primarily to take back home to his club, ideas about Wild Bunch Action Shooting.
Certainly a tribute to Sunrise Bill and his reputation as a premier Wild Bunch Stage designer—of course there are those who think Bill is a Masochist, but that’s another story. Another
Oregon Shooter, Lil Italy, was appointed Deputy
Match Director and Posse Leader by Sunrise Bill because of his experience and expertise with Wild
Bunch shooting—he’s a goodda italiano boy-thank you Lil Italy!
There were door prizes galore, but the biggest one of all, a 1911 in Caliber 22, was won by former
Marine, Lecherous Lester. Needless to say, after guns were put away, Lester was the happiest camper there. Well, as the Sun pulls away from the shore, and our boat sinks slowly in the west, it’s time to look at all the Category Winners.
However, we shooters know that all attendees are winners. For overall match results, as well as information on upcoming northwest shoots, please visit our website at: www.pinemountainposse.com
