The Shoreline News April 30, 2011 - 3 Manning banking on a comeback He’s been down this road before. But this time, Fabian Manning hopes the political route takes a different direction in getting him to Parliament. The former provincial politician-turned Senatorturned former-Senator is now candidate Fabian Manning who hopes to claim the Avalon seat in the May 2nd election, marking perhaps the first time in Canadian politics that someone has quit a lifetime appointment to a position that pays very well and demands little accountability - that of a Senator - to risk working for an electorate that can dump you anytime an election is called. “I find we’re getting a great response,” Manning told the Shoreline Newspaper. “You know, I’m not naive, I’ve been around politics for 18 years, (and) every election campaign is a battle of different ways. But we got great support on the ground.” Manning originally won the Avalon race in 2006, but quickly lost it when the country went to the polls just two years later, in 2008. At that time, he - like many other Conservative candidates from this province - fell victim to the Danny Williams ABC campaign. Months after losing, he was named to the Senate. But when the minority government of Stephen Harper fell, Manning once again felt the itch for elected politics and left the Senate to run in Avalon again. He acknowledges that not having to fight provincial tories this time around is making campaigning life a lot easier. “Certainly the support from the members of the House of Assembly and their campaign workers is a great enhancement to my campaign. And, you know, Minister Jerome Kennedy said it best a couple of days ago. We were out in Carbonear, and one of the local reporters asked him what is the difference in the election in 2008 and the election in 2011, and his answer was very profound if you ask me. He said ‘we did in 2008 - what was in the best interest of Newfoundland and Labrador, and in 2011 we’re doing what we believe is in the best interest of Newfoundland and Labrador. That’s why we’re supporting Fabian.” Manning says he thought that was a pretty good answer. At the door, Manning says he’s hearing positive things. “We’re hearing a lot of people who believe that we need a Newfoundlander and Labradorian representing us in Ottawa,” he says. “Nothing negative in regards to Peter MacKay, but the fact is, out of 510,000 Newfoundlanders, it should be one of us.” There’s no shortage of issues he’s hearing about as he campaigns. “A big issue in the riding is small craft harbours, we do a lot of work on that. The gun registry is very big throughout the riding. I’m running into a lot of that at the doors and people we talk to.” He says provincial-federal relations is also on peoples’ minds. “With the communities, especially with the town councils’ and the organizations, ensuring that the province and the federal government are working together.” And he says many people want to talk about health care. “Especially with an aging population. I have two parents of my own who are in their 80’s. Seniors’ concerns and health issues.” Even though he’s comfortable debating those issues and feels he understands what people want and need, Manning says the final result will depend on getting people out to vote, something that may not be easy in an environment where he believes people could be tiring of elections so often. “There is a level of apathy out there among the general population, you know. And theelection will come down to organization on election day. And certainly we have a strong team on the ground.” Debbie McGrath Financial worries can wear you down We’ll help you make a fresh start Let us help ease the burden of your money problems with: • • • • Confidential financial counseling Free initial consultation Flexible appointments Monthly payments on fees Contact us: 709.576.8480 or 1.800.563.8337 Visit www.needafreshstart.ca Email: ypower@deloitte.ca Youth ‘casing’ home Members of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary arrested two young people early Saturday morning, April 9th, after an anonymous tip that the pair were preparing to break into a home.
