This booklet is issued in spring 2015 by authority of Base Commander of CFB Shilo
LCol Stephen D. Joudrey. The views or opinions expressed herein are not
necessarily those of the Department of National Defence or the editor.
On the cover: Family events are big at CFB Shilo, with PSP-run events garnering plenty of participation, whether it is
the Haunted House for Halloween, or Canada Day, Santa’s visit before Christmas or Family Day. Minor hockey players have
new CADPAT-styled hockey jerseys, and are known as the Sentinels. CFB Shilo has an active training range, whether it’s the
infantry or artillery out honing their skills during all seasons. Medical and dental care are provided on the Base for soldiers.

CFB Shilo
Welcome to CFB Shilo
Base Commander’s Message
As those who reside here know, CFB Shilo enjoys the same comforts and amenities as other
communities of comparable size. Base residents have access to a full range of recreational activities
and services. Thirty kilomeres west lies the City of Brandon, an urban centre with a complete range
of services, retail stores, recreation, entertainment, and educational opportunities. Shilo’s location
allows residents to balance small-town living and enjoy the broader conveniences of an urban centre.
The Shilo community directory provides an overview of the Base and its lodger units. It offers an
introduction to the community and provides the information required to access the services we
possess. The information is not limited to the Base. This directory will also acquaint you with diverse
services and activities available to those who call Western Manitoba (Westman) home.
CFB Shilo has a strong relationship with all the surrounding communities. I encourage you to support
the businesses listed in this publication as their advertising not only makes the directory possible,
but also serves as a way to show their support for the Department of National Defence (DND) and
the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). Our surrounding communities are proud of the contribution we
all play in delivering government direction toward the domestic stability and international peace and
security. The Brandon Salutes program is clear evidence of the community support we are privileged
to enjoy.
On behalf of all Shilo soldiers, sailors, air force personnel, civilian personnel and residents, both on
and off Base, I welcome you and your family to the community. I trust you will be pleased with the
sincere hospitality displayed by our neighbours in Brandon’s hinterland. I encourage you to travel
throughout the Westman area as there is much to do and enjoy. I wish you all the best during your
posting to CFB Shilo.

CFB Shilo
CFB SHILO
CFB Shilo is home to the First Regiment Royal
Canadian Horse Artillery (1RCHA) and the
Second Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian
Light Infantry (2PPCLI). The Base is also home
to lodger units such as 3 Cdn Div TC C Coy, 3
CDSG SS Det Shilo, and 11 CF Health Services
Centre. The RCA Museum attracts military history enthusiasts from far and wide.
In addition to the many Canadian regular force
and reserve soldiers who train at Shilo, troops
from several foreign countries, including Germany, France, Denmark and the United States,
have trained here.
Germany, in particular, trained more than
140,000 soldiers from 1974 to 2000 under the
direction of the German Army Training Establishment Shilo (GATES). Many signs of the 27year legacy left by the Germans remain at Shilo
and throughout the southwest Manitoba region.
The training area of CFB Shilo covers almost
40,000 hectares, an area approximately 15 kilo-
CFB Shilo
metres by 30 kilometres. It consists of a unique
mix of open prairie, sand dunes and woodlands
which, when combined with a wide range of seasonal temperatures, makes Shilo one of the best
training areas in the world. Due to the unique
nature of most of the training area, increased
awareness has been placed on protecting the
environment. Environmentally friendly training
practices are constantly being studied, developed and monitored.
As the largest employer in southwestern Manitoba, CFB Shilo has a substantial economic
impact on the regional economy, including the
City of Brandon.
With a population of about 1,400 military personnel and their families, the Base is completely
autonomous with accommodations for more
than 600 families and quarters for close to 400
single personnel. This Base maintains its own
water and sewage and sports and recreational
facilities.

RCA Museum
Canada’s national artillery museum is a Manitoba star attraction, and one of the largest military
museums in Canada.
This CFB Shilo-based venue was winner of the
Tourism Industry Association of Canada Deloitte
Innovator of the Year 2008 national tourism
award.
The museum features five major indoor galleries
in a 24,000-square-foot building, with 28 guns
and vehicles on indoor display. Numerous
interactive exhibits with videos bring history to
life.
Among the exhibits are the Victoria Crosses of
two Manitobans — Capt Christopher O’Kelly
and Sgt Robert Spall.
The museum also features an outdoor gun park
which features more than 30 guns and vehicles.
Celebrate Canada’s military history with a bang!
The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery (RCA)
has been a part of the fabric of Canadian history
since the earliest days of our nation.
Since confederation, the Gunners of Canada
have served bravely in all of our national conflicts
and have played a role in establishing the fine
reputation for peacekeeping that Canada holds
CFB Shilo
today.
More than 130,000 Canadians served as
Gunners in two World Wars alone. In 1962, the
RCA Museum was established on this Base
in order to preserve and interpret this proud
heritage for future generations.
Since that time, the museum has amassed a
collection and archives of national significance
with more than 65,000 artifacts, many unique
in the world. Among the treasures in the RCA
Museum is one of the largest collections of
Canadian-made military vehicles in the world
and the largest and most complete inventory of
artillery systems and documentation in Canada.
The collection is truly a national treasure which
brings history to life — Explore. Experience.
Remember.
Hours of operation for the RCA Museum: all
year Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.;
Victoria Day to Labour Day weekend every day
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. To book a tour call 204-7653000 ext 3570. There’s an outdoor picnic area

Community Services
CANEX SUPERMART
CANEX, established in 1968, is a retail operation made up of a number of stores and services, designed specifically to meet the needs of
the military community. In many ways, CANEX
goes beyond the normal retail requirements in order to ensure the military
community reaps extra benefit from the
operation. How, you ask? How about returning money to you - the members of
the Canadian Forces community. Customers who shop CANEX are, in fact,
putting money into their own communal
account. Did you know that a large percentage of CANEX revenues from Canada and
Germany are returned every year to the Base
Fund of your Base/Wing? From there, the funds
can go to support any number of projects and activities as determined by the Base Fund committee, including recreation programs like Brownies
or Cubs, curling or skating, special events such
as homecoming parties for deployed members,
holiday festivities and the list goes on. Not only
is money returned to the military community in
the form of Base Funds, but CANEX also provides employment for spouses and children of
Canadian Forces members. Call 204-765-2343.

Chaplains
At CFB Shilo, chaplains are here to help.
What is a padre? Your padre is:
• A caring person of faith.
• A friend who will be there for you.
• A confidant who you can trust.
• A counsellor to help you find your way.
• An advocate to represent you.
• A listener who will hear you.
• A mentor to encourage you.
• A source of comfort in troubled times.
You are encouraged to talk with your chaplain at any time during
the course of your military career. Taking care of yourself is more than just physical. When a difficult
situation comes your way, sometimes it’s good just to talk to someone. A chaplain should be one
of your first contacts for any type of personal distress. They will point you in the direction you need
to go, listen when you need to talk something through, encourage you when you are in need, and
come along side you when you aren’t sure quite what to do. Don’t forget the importance of taking the
time to get to know your padre when things are going well, because it’s good for them to know who
you are. Then if things become difficult, you have a relationship already and both sides benefit from
that solid foundation of trust. You can reach a padre during the day through your unit or by calling
the Faith Centre.
For after-hours contact Base Duty at 204-765-3000 ext 3044.

Second Battalion
Princess Patricia’s
Canadian Light Infantry
2PPCLI is made up of soldiers from across
Canada. Based in the Light Armoured Vehicle III (LAV II)I, 2PPCLI is divided into
three rifle companies. Each rifle company
is made up of three platoons and a headquarters element. Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie
Companies each crew of 15 LAV IIIs. Combat
Support Company provides a reconnaissance
platoon and a signals platoon. Administration
Company works to keep the battalion fed, supplied and rolling.
On Aug. 15, 1950, the Second Battalion of the
PPCLI was formed as part of the Canadian Amy
Special Force bound
for Korea. On Nov.
26, under the command of LCol Jim
Stone, the battalion
sailed from Seattle.
While serving with
the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade,
the battalion fought
in the fiercest battles
in Korea.
On April 25, their skill as a unit was put to the
test during the battle of Kapyong. Amidst countless enemy attacks, the battalion defended their
position, resorting to calling artillery fire down
upon themselves. Their actions during this
battle won them the United States Presidential
Unit Citation. They continued to fight in the hills
of Korea until relieved by the First Battalion in
the fall of 1951.
Life back in Canada after the Korean War had
little respite for the Second Battalion. Upon
return, the battalion assumed the duties of the
Canadian Airborne Battalion. In the next 30
years, the battalion was stationed in Calgary,
Edmonton and Winnipeg. It was deployed three
times to Germany and four times to Cyprus,
accumulating a total of more than 12 years of
22
overseas duty.
On May 17, 1973, the barracks in Winnipeg were renamed Kapyong Barracks
in honour of the battalion’s heroic stand
April 1951.
After the Korean War, the Second Battalion was
heavily involved in United Nations (UN) operations in the Balkans. In April 1993, the battalion
departed for its first six-month peacekeeping
tour in the Former Yugoslavia. While serving
there under the UN, the Patricias were involved
in heavy fighting in the Medak Pocket region,
Croatia. LCol Jim Calvin, commanding officer,
won the Meritorious
Service Cross, and
eight other Patricias
were mentioned in
dispatches during
this firefight.
More recently, the
Second
Battalion
was involved in Afghanistan, forming
the core of battle
groups and deploying individuals and sub units
as augmentees throughout the duration of the
war. At the outset of the conflict in Afghanistan,
members of 2PPCLI participated in Op Apollo,
for which they received the Commander in
Chief’s award for their actions.
As part of Task Force 3-06, A Coy was attached
to the First Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment
battle group. During this rotation, members of A
Coy participated in Op Medusa for which they
were awarded the Governor General’s citation
for their actions.
PPCLI celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2014.

1st Regiment
Royal Canadian Horse Artillery
The Regular Force Regiment
originated in Kingston, Ont., and
Quebec City, Que., on Dec. 1, 1898,
when the Royal Canadian Artillery
(field division) of The Royal Canadian
Artillery was authorized to be formed
consisting of 25 pdr guns.
1RCHA traces its origins to Oct.
20, 1871, when A
and B Batteries of
garrison
artillery
were established
and
stationed
at Kingston and
Quebec
City.
In 1899, C Bty
was raised to
full strength and
became
part
of
Canada’s
commitment to the Boer War.
The Regiment fought no only in the Boer War,
but then saw action in the First and Second
World Wars, followed by the Korean conflict, as
well as in Afghanistan.
In 1956 all 25 pdr guns were replaced with
105mm C1 Howitzer. In November 1957, the
Regiment moved to Germany replacing 4RCHA,
to take up its initial cycle of tours with NATO’s
British Army of the Rhine at Fort Prince of Wales
near Hemer, Westphalia in West Germany.
In December 1960, 1RCHA was replaced
by 3RCHA and moved to Camp Gagetown.
The Regiment consisted of a Regimental
headquarters, A, B, C, H and U (locating)
Batteries and contained an Air Op Troop. A,
B and C Btys were equipped with 105mm
Howitzers, and H Bty was equipped with 155mm
towed howitzers.
In March 1967, 1RCHA deployed to Germany
with A, B and C Bty becoming the permanent
‘Gunnery’ unit supporting 4CMBG. U Bty was
converted to Counter Mortar Radar section, and
later disbanded in 1970. Shortly after deploying
24
in July 1968 all 105mm C1 guns
were replaced with 155mm M19A1
self-propelled Howitzers. 1RCHA
maintained the two-troop system
until the downsizing of the Brigade
announced in 1969 and moving to
Lahr, Germany in 1970. In order
to maintain three firing units, the
number of guns
were scaled back
to six per Battery,
and the single fire
unit concept was
adopted.
On Aug. 10,
1985, soldiers of
3RCHA at CFB
Shilo arrived in
Lahr. The event
made 1RCHA the
largest manned medium gun Regiment in NATO
at the time.
Currently, 1RCHA is garrisoned at CFB Shilo
and consists of five Batteries: A, B, C, and
Z, with Headquarters and Service Battery
supporting the Regiment.
A and B Btys are the gun Batteries of the
Regiment and currently use the M777C1
155mm Howitzer and 81mm Mortar systems.
C Bty is the Surveillance and Target Acquisition
Battery composed of Light Counter Mortar
Radars, mini unmanned aerial systems, and the
hostile artillery locating system.
Z Bty is 1RCHA’s Observation Battery consisting
of forward observation officers and forward air
controllers. Headquarters and Service Battery
consists of the Regimental Command Team,
operations, training, engineers, signallers,
cooks, finances and the padres. Important

3 CDSG SS Det Shilo
3 CDSG SS Det Shilo was created when 731
Signal Sqn amalgamated into former 742 Signal
Sqn (Edmonton) in 2011. 731 Signal Sqn began
as the Manitoba Signal Sqn, formed in 1958 with
the disbanding of Prairie Command and Prairie
Command Signal Regiment.
In 1961, the Fort Churchill Signal Troop became
part of the Sqn. That same year, excavation
of the Manitoba Regional Emergency Facility, “THE BUNKER”, was started. It would soon
become the new home of 731 Signal Sqn.
On April 1, 1966, headquarters for the Manitoba
Signal Sqn was moved from Fort Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg to Shilo.
THE BUNKER, which 731 Signal Sqn operated
out of was closed in 1997 and the unit took pos-
session of its current buildings.
A small unit of about 50 staff, they provide the
resources and personnel to facilitate an array
of communication media to our service area
— stretching from Thunder Bay, Ont., to the Alberta/Saskatchewan border.
It administers and maintains the Base telephone
system and its associated communications cable infrastructure.

11 CF Health Services Centre
Medical and Mental Health Services
in CFB Shilo are provided through
the facilities of 11 CF H Svcs C in
accordance with relevant orders and
instructions which may be issued from
time to time.
Sick parades are held at the Base
Medical Clinic in accordance with following schedule: Monday to Friday inclusive — all ranks 0730 to 0900 hrs.
All patients are triaged based on urgency, with
more urgent cases being seen first:
• For members in same urgency category, patients will usually be seen on a first-come-firstserved basis; ultimately, the clinical staff reserves the right to determine the order in which
patients are seen; and if a patient's situation
worsens, they must notify the staff in order for
them to be reassessed and change triage levels
if warranted.
For base emergencies (life, limb or vision threatening) call 911 first. Emergency staff will contact
Base Clinic to determine patient destination —
Base Clinic vs Brandon Regional Health Centre.
Pharmacy hours of operation are:
• Monday 0830-1200 and 1300-1600 hours
• Tuesday 0830-1200 and 1300-1600 hours
• Wednesday 0730-1200 and 1300-1400 hours
• Thursday 0730-1200 and 1430-1600 hours
CFB Shilo
• Friday 0830-1200 and 1300-1600 hours
After working hours, weekends, and
holidays the procedure for obtaining
medical care is as follows: for medical
emergencies, use the 911 Emergency
Service.
An ambulance will respond and take
the patient directly to Brandon Regional Health Centre.
Examples of emergencies include
chest pain, difficulties breathing, and unconsciousness (threat to life, limb or vision); for
urgent medical problems, which the member
feels are not emergencies but need to be attended to prior to the next normal business day,
the member should proceed to the nearest civilian walk-in clinic or health care facility; routine
non-urgent medical problems can wait until the
next available sick parade; and in non-emergent
situations, the 24-hour Manitoba Health Links
1-888-315-9257 line should be consulted to assist in determining urgency. Dial 204-765-3000

CFB Shilo
It is with great respect and admiration that I welcome you to CFB
Shilo and the surrounding community of Brandon.
My name is Cheryl Goossen and it has been my passion for more
than four years to share the many products ViSalus offers in the form
of healthier meal alternatives. The product line is designed to meet
the needs of our busy lives including protein cookies, healthy snacks,
cereal, meal replacement shakes and energy drinks.
When you’re posted to a new Base, getting settled is one of the
busiest times. You can quite easily find yourself off-track. As a mother
of three, married to a busy physician, I know how a spouse’s absence
can make daily routines overwhelming! Extracurriculars, household
chores and simple tasks can become daunting. Sometimes that means
short cuts with things like meal prep, leading to quick, fast food stops
along the way.
Why ViSalus?
My love for ViSalus is two-fold: health and heart for community. For
every 10 pounds lost or muscle gained, ViSalus donates 30 meals to
an at-risk, or obese child, through our local food bank, The Samaritan
House. It’s as simple as taking the Project10 Challenge. I am honoured
to place products with a high protein content, great shelf-life, and are
gluten and lactose free in their weekly hampers. I have seen first-hand
the positive impact they have.
I am truly committed to helping others in whatever small way I can.
I love what I do because I can truly make a difference in the health
of families in our community. I have partnered with, supported, and
refined food choices for hundred of clients.
If you would like to give our products a try, need more information
on the Project 10 Challenge, or are even looking for a stay-at-home
mom or dad business, please feel free to contact me. I would love to
hear from you!
