Letter from the Superintendent It is with respect and gratitude for this community’s efforts that I write to thank Auburn residents for supporting our budget process and prioritizing time to vote last month. Our budget was approved by a 3-to-1 margin for the second consecutive year. The 2014-15 School Budget bolsters the Auburn School District’s mission to provide equitable educational opportunities and experiences necessary to develop confident life-long learners. This budget reflects a continuation of dedicating resources to restore instructional programming that enhance educational outcomes for all students. Through the collective efforts of the School Board, Auburn educators, parents, students, and elected officials, Auburn Schools realized the $2.25M in additional state aid following the Governor’s initial budget proposed in January of this year. Input from all stakeholders was reviewed during this budget cycle and promoted in the final proposal to our community. Please be assured that we will maintain a focus on ensuring educator and student access to high quality curriculum resources aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards. Additionally, The Auburn Enlarged City School District will continually reflect on benchmarks for student success to ensure alignment of targeted resources in sustaining our continuous improvement efforts. Thank you again for your ongoing support. Constance D. Evelyn, Superintendent of Schools 1 Odyssey of the Mind World Finals Congratulations to Auburn's Odyssey of the Mind Teams from Seward, coached by Karol Soules, and Owasco, coached by Jon Carnes, who competed in the World Finals on May 31 at Iowa State University. Superintendent for Personnel May 2, 2014 REPORT CARDS UPDATE Please be advised, this June we will no longer record the name of your child’s classroom teacher for the upcoming school year on the report card. Unfortunately, this early notice has created confusion in the past, due to the numerous changes that have or can occur over the summer regarding teacher assignments. Families will receive a letter in early August regarding assignments for the 2014-15 school year. Please feel free to direct all questions or concerns to me at 315-255-8809. Thank You. Mother’s Day Program at Casey Park By Eugenie M. Colby and Meghan Ganey First Grade Teachers, Casey Park Elementary School On May 9 first grade students at Casey Park celebrated Mother's Day with a “Special Lady Concert and Tea Party.” Students recited a Mother’s Day poem and sang “I Just Called to Say I Love You.” After the concert, guests were invited to the classroom for refreshments. 2 Auburn Enlarged City School District Newsletter, June 2014 Auburn Junior High School Students Visit Washington, DC On the weekend of May 16-18 four busses of the Auburn Junior High School 8th graders headed to the inner harbor of Baltimore, Maryland, and toured the Baltimore Science Center followed by a dinner cruise through the Chesapeake Bay. Students danced into the sunset and captured memories with lots of pictures and selfies with their friends. Students spent Saturday morning at Arlington National Cemetery and Tomb of the Unknowns where a ceremony for Armistice Day took place. The afternoon was spent at The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the American History Museum. A guided night tour of most of Washington’s Monuments began with the traditional group picture in front of the White House followed by the Jefferson Memorial, FDR, WWII, Martin Luther King and the Lincoln Memorial. A visit to the National Aquarium and lunch at Baltimore Harbor on Sunday concluded the tour. 3 Auburn Enlarged City School District Newsletter, June 2014 Kids With Pride are Productive Kids at Genesee Cinda Gilmore, Anne Mlod & Jim O'Neill Kids With Pride Advisors On Wednesday, April 23, members of Genesee Elementary School's "Kids With Pride" Leadership group participated in the "1,000 Kid Clean Up" by picking up trash in the neighborhood surrounding the school. This was part of an Earth Day celebration, sponsored by The Partnership for Results, and coordinated by Susan Muldoon. Brittany Yanez and Adam Gagnier sell pudding at movie night. The "Kids With Pride" led their school in a fundraiser for The Nyota Fund on May 16, before the showing of the movie "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" in the school auditorium that evening. They made and sold banana pudding, and raised over $100, which will pay for one year of high school for two Tanzanian students. They learned about The Nyota Fund from former Auburn student Marisa Ranieri, who started the fund after teaching in Tanzania, and learning about students' obstacles in obtaining a high school education there. The author visit was made possible by a grant from the Auburn Educational Foundation and organized by the elementary librarians. New Jersey author Rachelle Burk visited each of the Auburn elementary schools the week of May 19, and delighted students and teachers alike with her dynamic and engaging presentation about what it’s like to be an author. The author of two books and numerous magazine articles for children, Ms. Burk demonstrated how authors weave real-life experiences with imaginary events to create characters and settings that give depth and meaning to stories. Her first book, Treehouse in a Storm, is based on her own experience as a child living through Hurricane Betsy in New Orleans. With much humor and a sense of fun that gave hints to her part-time job as a clown for hire, she had students guessing which aspects of the book were real and which were purely fiction. Students and teachers had many rave reviews of the presentation, with comments such as “It was the best presentation in a long time. The kids loved it and commented on how you have to practice like the author.” Another teacher remarked, “The author was entertaining and the Kindergarten students were engaged for over 45 minutes (not an easy thing to do).” Ms. Burk has two upcoming books, The Tooth Fairy Trap, which is Ms. Burk’s first chapter book and slated for release this summer, and A Good Sign for Alice, a picture book that tells the story of a deaf puppy adopted by a deaf girl. Besides being an author, Ms. Burk is a psychiatric social worker, clown and volunteer ambulance driver. 4 Auburn Enlarged City School District Newsletter, June 2014 AUBURN HIGH SCHOOL: JUNE 2014 Regents/RCT/ Final Exam Schedule AUBURN HIGH SCHOOL: JUNE 2014 Regents/RCT/Final Exam Schedule JUNE 12 THURSDAY 8:00 a.m. Pre-Calculus –(85)– Gym Intro to Geometry –(39)–C317 Algebra 1A –(145)– Gym Inter.
