Summer 2015 Page PTP Scholarship Information The Larisa Vaynberg Memorial College Scholarship Larisa Vaynberg was a permanent fixture in the Princeton area tennis community, having worked at the Princeton Tennis Program for almost twenty years and teaching countless numbers of people how to play tennis. Larisa was a passionate teacher and player. In her youth, she was the #1 ranked junior tennis player in the Ukraine. In a tennis-loving community, it was nearly impossible not to hear her name. She had a huge impact on all of her students and their families. Larisa was known by her students to be a tough and demanding teacher but one who was exceptionally caring, patient, and fully committed to each individual’s success. She pushed others forward so that they could become the best versions of themselves. At the same time, she was exceptionally modest. She rarely considered, and was unlikely to admit, the type of impact she was having. Larisa passed away in June 2013 from complications of pancreatic cancer. In 2014, she was posthumously named Teaching Professional of the Year by the Middle States section of the United States Tennis Association. Although she never needed recognition to motivate her, the award is fitting for a person who could have won the honor every single year, but flew under the radar in her typically understated style. She left an indelible mark in Princeton that we wish to perpetuate. Her friends and supporters decided to honor Larisa’s memory by establishing the “Larisa Vaynberg Memorial Scholarship Fund.” Each year PTP awards a scholarship to at least one graduating high school senior who has committed to enrolling in college beginning in the fall of the award year. Applicants will be selected based on how well they represent the spirit of Larisa Vaynberg. We look for juniors who love tennis, work hard both in and out of school, show good sportsmanship and are goodwill ambassadors for the game. Each scholarship awarded will provide $1,500 to be put toward the awardee’s college tuition. This year’s winner(s) will be announced at the Princeton Tennis Classic on June 4, 2015. The Bayard Jordan Camp Scholarship for Sportsmanship Bayard Jordan (also known as “the man with the floppy hat”) taught countless numbers of people how to play tennis. His spirit energized others. At times, he had to be coaxed into accepting payment for his services. His sportsmanship was unwavering. He has been described as caring, patient, generous, kind, insightful, humble, and inspirational. Bayard was an excellent tennis instructor and player whose philosophy was “play fair, do your best, and enjoy the game.” He was a fixture at the Community Park Tennis Courts during summers and at the Princeton Indoor Tennis Center through the indoor tennis seasons. Bayard worked closely with Eve Kraft and others to pioneer the original Princeton Tennis Program; he recognized PTP’s value to the community. Bayard Jordan passed away in January 2006 at his home in Alaska, far from the Princeton tennis community which was home to him for most of his 87 years. He left an indelible mark in Princeton that we wish to perpetuate. His friends and supporters decided to honor Bayard’s memory by establishing the “Bayard Jordan Memorial Scholarship Fund.” Each year PTP awards a scholarship to at least one recipient (minimum age 12 years) who represents the spirit of Bayard Jordan. We look for junior players who love tennis, work hard, show good sportsmanship and are good-will ambassadors for the game. Financial need may be considered but is not a prerequisite for consideration. Each scholarship awarded will enable the winner to attend one week of PTP Training Camp at no cost. This year’s winner(s) will be announced at the Princeton Tennis Classic on June 4, 2015 Deadline for submission: May 19, 2015 Name Email Address (Street/Town/ZIP) Daytime Phone Date of Birth Please attach a brief essay of no more than 500 words that tells us why you believe that you should be considered for a Larisa Vaynberg scholarship. Applicants will be judged on how well they embody Larisa’s spirit as well as their demonstrable commitment to both tennis and academic achievement.
