OVERVIEW Introduction to ISO:14001 Environmental Management Systems 1 Definition: ISO-14001: Environmental Management Systems An administrative framework for the systematic, structured and documented approach to the management of environmental affairs. 2 Quality or Environmental Management Systems - the ‘Basic Principles’ are the same... 3 ISO14001: The “Continual Improvement” Loop... Planning for ISO-14001 should cover four areas: (1) Environmental Aspects-Capture the significant impacts (2) Legal and Other Requirements-Ensure basic compliance to all national and local laws (3) Objectives and Targets- Should be consistent with the Environmental Policy (4) Management Programme- Structured plan for achieving set Objectives 9 Planning should focus on - “Significant Aspects” and “Legal Issues” What do we use? What do we waste? What could we harm? What are the risks? What are the laws? …and which are the MOST IMPORTANT issues for us? 10 An environmental ‘Aspect’ and it’s environmental ‘Impact’ • • Aspect- An element of an organizations activities, products or services that can interact with the environment. Impact- The effect of the aspect on the environment - harmful or beneficial. Example: • Aspect: Spillage of dirty oils generated from maintenance activity. • Impact: Soil pollution or if drained into drainage line, it will add to the pollution load on ETP. 11 An environmental ‘Aspect’ and it’s environmental ‘Impact’ • • Aspect- An element of an organizations activities, products or services that can interact with the environment. Impact- The effect of the aspect on the environment - harmful or beneficial. Example: • Aspect: Shifting of fully grown trees due to building expansion activity. • Impact: Tree population is maintained and all benefits of trees are sustained. 12 Planning should focus on - “Clear objectives and targets for improvement” By the end of this year, we must achieve these improvements! 13 An example of Environmental “Objective and Target” Policy Principle No.3 Striving to operate in a manner designed to minimise and where possible eliminate releases to air, land and water during manufacturing by focussing on safe technologies, company standards and operating practices. Objectives 1. Minimise process emissions to atmosphere 2. Minimise risk of ground and ground water contamination 3. Control releases to surface water and sewer to prevent pollution 4. Minimise solid and hazardous waste requiring treatment or disposal Objective Owners and Targets Objective No. 4-001 Type Owner Description and Target I D. Black 4-002 M E. Pointon 4-003 C Operations 4-004 C T. Smith Complete fume extract rationalisation for emissions of VOC and acids (December 1998) Determine sources of ground water contamination and set up a remediation plan (October 1999) Undertake monitoring of HF and HCl emissions to atmosphere on a quarterly basis according to documented procedures. To increase oil recycling by 10% 14 Auto Division Environmental Objectives and Targets: 2004-05 They include: improving environmental performance of products, resource conservation, and pollution prevention. A range of “Significant Aspects” at Plant level are addressed 15 An Environmental “Objective” is targeted with a formal Environmental Management Programme - or EMP ......and this is how we are going to do it! 16 ISO-14001: Environmental Management Systems Policy Management Review Planning ISO 14001 Checking & Corrective Action Implementation & Operation The Five Major Elements of ISO:14001 17 Everyone understands the role they have to play! ISO:14001 requires... Defined responsibilities and training to ensure competence 18 ISO:14001 requires... Careful Document Control I don’t need these old analytical results any more. I’m sure he MUST have put it here somewhere!!! 19 ISO:14001 requires... Defined Operational Control ??? What procedures and work instructions are needed to make sure that environmental aspects are managed? 20 ISO:14001 requires... Clear emergency preparedness and response What accidents and emergencies could occur? How can we prevent environmental impacts? 21 ISO-14001: Environmental Management Systems Policy Management Review Planning ISO 14001 Checking & Corrective Action Implementation & Operation The Five Major Elements of ISO:14001 22 ISO:14001 requires... Checking and Corrective Action Monitor it ...... Record it ...... Check it ..... and if something is wrong,. Correct or prevent it ! 23 ISO:14001 requires... Regular audit of EMS procedures Did you use the Scrap Memo (PCF038) to send the waste to Scrap Yard? 24 ISO-14001: Environmental Management Systems Policy Management Review Planning ISO 14001 Checking & Corrective Action Implementation & Operation The Five Major Elements of ISO:14001 25 ISO:14001 requires... Top Management review for improvement We haven’t done too badly this year. How can we improve our system next year? 26 ISO-14001: A business case for Cost Saving Rs. • Cost of effluent treatment = Rs. 3.45 per cubic meter of effluent. (Approximately 3000m3/day is treated per day) i.e. Rs. 10,350/day or Rs.37.77 lakhs/year) • Operational control on leakage and spillage of oils, coolants in Machine Shops will reduce the pollution load on Main ETP and corresponding expense on effluent treatment will be saved. • Operational control on separation of sludge, oily muck and tramp oils from coolant and washing media in Machine Shops will reduce the pollution load on Main ETP and corresponding expense on effluent treatment will be saved. 27 ISO: 14001 - Benefits of Improved Efficiency Pollution Control Improved Process Management Waste Minimisation Energy Savings Resource Efficiency Recycling & Reuse of Materials Improved Contractor Management (minimum down time) 28 ISO: 14001 - Benefits of Improved Efficiency • Environmental issues need to be managed and if not will cost us money! • ISO:14001 System is a management tool for the same. • Once again… ISO:14001 can be summed up as… • Policy – Company has said what it is going to do for environment protection • Planning – what to do and how to do it! • Implement – set it up so that it can be done! • Check – make sure its done right! • Review – change it when needed! 29
