Program Objectives
San Jacinto College offers a comprehensive
training program for those students who have a
desire to develop the knowledge base to perform
skills under the supervision of licensed eye care
professionals.
These procedures include: medical histories,
diagnostic tests, refractometry, anatomical
and functional ocular measurements and tests,
administration of topical ophthalmic and oral
medications, instructing patients, maintain
ing equipment, sterilizing surgical instruments,
assisting in minor ophthalmic surgery, assisting
in the fitting of contact lenses, and opticianry.
Ophthalmic medical technology is a rapidly
expanding field and a growing demand exists for
technicians.
Students may obtain an occupational certificate,
certificate of technology or their associate of
applied science degree. Our eye care technology
department consists of three areas of preparation.
This program is designed to correlate classroom
and laboratory practice with clinical experience
in ophthalmic offices and clinics.
The eye care technology program at San Jacinto
College is accredited by the Commission on
Accreditation for Ophthalmic Medical Programs
(CoA-OMP). Those graduates of the associate of
applied science program are eligible to petition
for examination through the Joint Commission
on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology
at the certified ophthalmic technician level.
Graduates of the associate of applied science
program and the certificate of technology are
Revised 6/2013
eligible to petition to sit for the National Contact
Lens Examiner. Graduates from any of the three
programs may petition to sit for the American
Board of Opticians exam.
