As a reminder, the Tootsie Roll Donation Event is approaching, which is part of the Campaign for Citizens with Intellectual Disabilities. The Tootsie Roll Donation event will occur the weekends of October 2 and 9 at Kroger and Walmart, respectively, and the weekend of November 21 following Mass. The Council’s 20th anniversary is on November 6 with a celebration planned on Saturday, November 7 in conjunction with the 5:30 PM Mass. Council 11672 was chartered on November 6, 1995. Please note volunteers are still needed for a committee to plan and conduct a catered dinner opened to all interested individuals. The dinner would honor the charter members, past Grand Knights, and Financial Secretaries for the efforts at starting and growing the Council. This dinner would also highlight the work done by the Council members for the Church, community, families, youth, culture of life, and our fellow brothers. Finally, Labor Day is approaching on September 7. This celebration was the creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the countless and substantial achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. As such, please think about the true meaning of this holiday, and not as a day the banks and post office will be closed. As always, please take time for yourself and family, aid where possible those less fortunate, and pray for those in need. One of Tim’s major accomplishments this month was instrumental leadership in a highly successful fund raising potluck on Sunday, August 3 in support of our seminarian Josh Altonji. Josh will be the first parishioner to be ordained from Good Shepherd Church. Tim and his family have been spearheading this effort to accept donations at the potluck and hold that money until Josh’s ordination draws closer. The Memorial of Our Lady of sorrows takes place on September 15, the day after the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross. We remember the suffering of Mary as she stood at the foot of the Cross and witnessed the torture and death of her Son. We are also reminded of Simeon’s words to Mary (Luke2:34-35) at the Presentation of the Lord - that a sword would pierce her soul. Prayer to the Queen of Martyrs Mary, most holy virgin and Queen of Martyrs, accept the sincere homage of my filial affection. Into thy heart, pierced by so many swords, do thou welcome my poor soul. Receive it as the companion of thy sorrows at the foot of the cross, on which Jesus died for the redemption of the world. With thee, O sorrowful Virgin, I will gladly suffer all the trials, contradictions, and infirmities which it shall please our Lord to send me. I offer them all to thee in memory of thy sorrows, so that every thought of my mind , and every beat of my heart may be an act of compassion and of love for thee. And do thou, sweet Mother, have pity on me, reconcile me to thy divine Son Jesus, keep me in His grace, and assist me in my last agony, so that I may be able to meet thee in heaven and sing thy glories. He didn't want his mother to walk with him. She wanted to give him the feeling that he had some independence but yet know that he was safe. So she had an idea of how to handle it. She asked a neighbor if she would please follow him to school in the mornings, staying at a distance, so he probably wouldn't notice her. She said that since she was up early with her toddler anyway, it would be a good way for them to get some exercise as well, so she agreed. Finally she said to Timmy, 'Have you noticed that lady following us to school all week? Do you know her? Timmy nonchalantly replied, 'Yeah, I know who she is.’ The little girl said, 'Well, who is she?' That's just Shirley Goodnest and her daughter Marcy,' Timmy replied. ‘Shirley Goodnest?’ Said the little friend. ‘Who the heck is she and why is she following us?' 'Well,' Timmy explained, 'every night my Mom and I say the 23rd Psalm with my prayers, 'cuz she worries about me so much. And in the Psalm, it says, 'Shirley Goodnest and Marcy shall follow me all the days of my life', so I The next school day, the neighbor and her little girl set out guess I'll just have to get used to it!' following behind Timmy as he walked to school with another neighbor girl he knew. She did this for the whole week. As the two walked and chatted, kicking stones and twigs, Timmy's little friend noticed the same lady was following them, as she seemed to do every day all week. What is the basic meaning of the Ten Commandments? First, The Ten Commandments point out the absolute priority of a free and loving serves to God. Secondly, the Ten Commandments show that serving God absolutely requires respect for one’s neighbor in deeds and words. Thirdly, the Decalogue makes it clear that the deliberate doing of certain acts, and, as the last two commandments show, even the inner will to do such types of acts are incompatible with the love of God and the respect for one’s neighbor 2. Can we compile with the Commandments of Christ by our own power? No! . John 15:5 reads, “Without me you can do nothing.” It is the grace of Christ and gifts of His spirit that makes the moral life easy and pleasant. 3. What is virtue? A virtue is a settled disposition or characteristic of the good person, which inclines the person toward good, loving, and morally right action. 4. How many kinds of virtue are there? There are chiefly two kinds of virtue. 5. What is/are the kind {s} of virtue? Infused virtues are gifts from God that give one the power to act in excellent ways, as the gift of faith, hope, and love. This gives one the power to direct our lives toward the Lord. Acquired virtues are learned traits, obtained also by divine assistance, that make it not only possible but also easy and pleasant to do that which is good and right. 6. Is a venial sin a matter of great importance? Yes! Although venial sin does not separate us from the love of God, it weakens our love of God and paves the way for the commission of mortal sins. 7. What is an example of a venial sin? A theft of a very trivial item is a venial sin. Or, when one is being careless about keeping a promise to do a favor for a friend. 8. What is a mortal sin? A mortal sin is a sin that separates one from friendship of God, or deepens one’s alienation from God. A mortal sin involves doing an act that is or thought to be a gravely evil kind of an act, and doing this with sufficient knowledge and freedom. 9. Must one believe in God to commit a sin? No! Failure to believe in God, when one has been given sufficient graces to do so, is itself sinful 10. What is the nature of the first sin?
