Biopharma to Education Program Bridges Classroom to Industry
BREA, CALIF. — (March 12, 2012) — Beckman Coulter Life Sciences has granted a PA 800 Protein
Characterization System to the University of California, Los Angeles’ Department of Chemistry &
Biochemistry through the company’s Biopharma to Education Program. Founded by Thomas Ed
Horton, Ph.D of the Beckman Coulter Life Sciences Analytical Group, the program helps universities
bring capillary electrophoresis (CE) education into their curriculum.
Joseph A. Loo, Ph.D is the faculty director of the UCLA Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics
Technology Center of the UCLA Molecular Instrumentation Center, and it is in this lab where the PA
800 will reside. The instrument will be used to teach CE theory and laboratory work to undergraduate
and graduate students in the chemical instrumentation and mass spectrometry and proteomics classes.
Loo is also a professor in the Department of Biological Chemistry, David Geffen School of Medicine,
and in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UCLA.
The analytical technologies used to study current therapeutics are rapidly evolving, and it is a
challenge for undergraduate institutions to provide the most up-to-date equipment and training.
Despite the industry’s need for trained individuals, the constant change and associated costs often strain
the resources of academic institutions.

for the opportunity to grant accredited universities and four-year colleges with previously-owned CE
instruments and to help educate young scientists.”
Beckman Coulter’s contributions to CE started in 1989 with the launch of the P/ACE series, and
the company continues to lead the field. A wealth of educational materials on CE theory, applications
and laboratory work will be made available for institutions that adopt CE in their curriculum. The
grant to Loo’s laboratory covers the cost of the instrument and does not include installation and service.
PA 800 separation technology is ideal for protein analysis, and has been used to characterize
many billion-dollar biotherapuetic antibodies.

quantitative, qualitative and automated solutions for analysis of protein purity, charge isoform
distribution and glycan structure.
