Volume 3 April 1, 2015 APRIL FOOL ! GOT’CHA ! Welcome to the 4th monthly edition of the SISTER CENTERS SUNTENNIAL! We are entertaining and informative and need your help to continue ! If you have a story, anecdote, event or something to share, please send it to: Mail to: Jupiter Lanes, P.O. Box 24903, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33307 Fax to: 954-462-3235 or Email us at suntennial@bowlfl.com Jupiter Lanes Weekend Specials The British Journal of Sports Medicine publishes monthly health related articles. January’s issue featured benefits of something as simple as joining a walking group. It is no surprise to us to learn the physical and mental health effects of joining a simple exercise group leads to overall mental and physical health. Common sense tells us couch potatoes run increased risks for diabetes, heart disease and weight gain. Scientific studies, like the one published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, January 2015 went further than the common sense statement. They found people who spent most time sitting were up to 24% more likely to suffer early death than those who reduced their sitting time. And it wasn’t just shortening the time you sit; it was also the need for exercise. Summer leagues are around the corner. Sign up now to get your team into one of our Summer leagues. Check out the list to find the league that suits you best. Spring Cleaning Yard Sale & Classic Car Show Saturday, April 11, Saint Lucie Lanes hosts a FREE Spring Cleaning Yard Sale & Car Show. It's time to empty your garages and attics and turn unwanted items into cash. Display areas available at only $5 a space with all proceeds supporting a scholarship fund for local youth bowlers. For example, the members of the Savanna Club Car Club. During season Saint Lucie Lanes hosts over 20 cars from their car club at our events. Club President David Greenburg and his wife of 61 years, Janet, both proudly exhibit their cars. David has an amazing 1949 Packard Super 8 restored to showroom quality. But this is not David's first Packard. He previously owned and fully restored a 1948 Packard, sold to Ted Vernon of South Beach Classics. The 48 Packard is often driven by visiting celebrities in south Florida as well as used in TV and movie productions when vintage automobiles are required. Janet proudly boasts an equally unique 1986 Chrysler La Baron Woody Convertible. One of only 500 made, Jan’s was owned by Phillips Automotives of New Hampshire for 20 years which makes her the 2nd owner of record, something quite rare for a car nearly 30 years old. After retiring from 28 years of service at IBM as its South East Asia Area Manager , the Greenburgs moved to Boca Raton, Florida in 1987. Jan saw and fell in love with a 1986 La Baron and, as any good husband would do, David found the car being offered for sale. After a month of negotiating, Buyer and Seller struck a deal. David had the car shipped to Port St. Lucie and surprised Jan one evening when he asked her if she would like to take a ride after dinner. Jan walked around the corner, saw the La Baron and broke into tears of delight. Jan loved that car so much that it took her 2 years before she would drive it for fear of scratches ! David and Jan have 3 wonderful children, two sons and a daughter. One son lives in Stuart and works for Harley Davidson. Their daughter is a realtor living in Jupiter. The oldest son lives in Arizona, works in the real estate industry and owns a gun shop. They have 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. David and Janet are living the dream. David says that when he goes he wants “it to be like sliding into home plate with a beer in one hand shouting it was one hell of a run!” At the end of our interview, David wanted us to know his favorite quote: "Live Simply, Love generously, Care deeply, Speak kindly and leave the rest up to God!" - Ronald Reagan Remember our 3 Musketeers from the March Edition of Sister Centers Suntennial? Well, here they are ! Left to right; Melody Sabo, (72), Carolyn Weitkamp, (72), and Pat Fagan, (62) all have been bowling at Saint Lucie Lanes from 5 to 15 years and say it is “their secret to staying young!” Our Bowl For Health Club Beats All Statistics. Sandy Lopez heads up “Bowl for Health” every Wednesday afternoon at Saint Lucie Lanes. She starts the group with light stretching exercises; then a healthy light meal; lots of good company; and the calorie burning benefits of bowling. This group range in age from 60’s to 90 years young. They “have a ball” while keeping fit! Tuna salad plates and turkey wraps are the most popular delicious healthy choices! Dottie Walker, of Fort Pierce, is 88 years young. Dottie told us “When this bowling center first opened ( I don't even remember the year) I was a pioneer of Saint Lucie Lanes. My husband Jim Walker signed me up and when the doors opened on this new bowling center I joined a league. Now, I am not a great bowler but I love the game. I have to tell you that I look forward to coming every week. Now a days it is great exercise for a woman of my age, actually it is great exercise for any age.” Over 20% of seniors over 80 have weak muscle strength according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). They linked diminished muscle strength to slower walking, greater slip and fall accidents and an increased risk of death. The CDC recommends seniors maintain optimal physical conditioning through good overall preventive care, nutrition, and exercise. So take a tip from Dottie – get up, get out and get moving ! Happiness: An Added Benefit of Exercise The American Heart Association analyzed 20 years of information provided by adults and found a link between body size and depression. Low fitness levels seemed to generate depression and weight gain. To avoid these damaging effects, the American Heart Association recommends adults improve their physical fitness levels, regardless of their body size. Make your exercise fun to keep it going. Wearing comfortable shoes and clothing and stick to a consistent routine and workout time. Set reasonable short term goals and you will be surprised how quickly you achieve those goals ! Include fun with family and friends, track you progress, and reward yourself for success. The Mayo Clinic Lists 7 Benefits of Exercise: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Weight control; Battle chronic health and disease conditions; Improves mood; Boosts energy levels Promotes better sleep; Reduces stress; and Can be fun ! ADDICTIONS ARE FRIGHTENING In December 2014 the journal of Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking went worldwide and analyzed 31 nations. They defined Internet Addiction (and we include cell phone addiction) as behavior when a person can’t stop using the Internet; stop using the cell phone; and don’t pay attention to what is going on around them. Young or old, we’ve all experienced this type of behavior which, more often than not, can be very annoying. Internet and cell phone addiction affects a person's life; health; and relationships. February 28th Upper Division Winner Emily Passanante March 7th Upper Division Winner Kevin Markowitz February 28th & March 7th Lower Division Winner Pat Cernuto When Matt Verzi was 9, his Boy Scout troop came to bowl at Jupiter Lanes. He returned to Jupiter Lanes with another youth group and that’s when the love affair began ! Matt told his Mom, Colleen, he wanted bowl more. Mom signed Matt up for the youth league at Jupiter Lanes. Somewhat shy, Matt bowled pretty well for his age and, little by little, he continued to improve. But that “little by little” sure changed when on February 14th in the Palm Beach County Youth Tournament. Matt thrilled the crowd by starting a game with 11 strikes in a row. Nerves set in and he had to settle for an awesome and career high 299. That was just the beginning of Matt's coming out of the shadows of other top bowlers at Jupiter Lanes. With Patrick Wallace and Tyler Young off to college, Matt gained more confidence punctuated by his first 700 series and a 709 in the U and Me Kid league at Jupiter Lanes. Matt and Mom Colleen are on cloud nine. Six days later Matt proved it was no fluke by bowling a 732 in the Stars of Tomorrow league on Saturday March 6th. Junior director, Olga Wallace, says Matt at age 15 can only get better.Even though Matt’s Dwyer High School team did not make the State tournament last year, he made it on an individual basis. One day Matt hopes to bowl in college and maybe tour with the pros. Matt told us his Dwyer High School team is his passion. He believes he and his teammates are primed to unseat the powerful Jupiter High School team. And the way he has been bowling, I wouldn’t bet against him. EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH Community Coordinator, Wes Tuten, has been a familiar face around Saint Lucie Lanes since he was “discovered” 5 years ago in Fort Lauderdale by Sister Centers owner Christine Vitolo. Wes was working as a bartender in a trendy club. Wes’s incredibly friendly demeanor and nearly unstoppable positive attitude so impressed Ms. Vitolo that she invited him to be the Beverage Manager at Saint Lucie Lanes. At the time, his mother was living in Port St. Lucie so it was a no brainer for him to make the move. The rest, as they say, is history. Wes’ experience in managing service industries serves him well, having been the community event coordinator for Savannah Club for years. Wes has had an interesting life, including honorably serving our nation as a paratrooper in Vietnam, a period he hesitates to discuss. When we last spoke with Wes about his military career, he said; “I am probably not suppose to be disclosing this but I was stationed on the USS Sunnyvale and the USS Longview. They were both Merchant Marine vessels that looked like cargo ships, but were helicopter transport ships for long distant deployments in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.” Wes went on to tell us that he was part of the crew on “spy ships that picked up the spy satellites that took pictures of our enemies. My job was to retrieve the satellites after they splashed down.” Wes tirelessly works as Community Coordinator for Sister Centers Jupiter and Saint Lucie Lanes. His “CAN DO” attitude and warm personality serve him well. Wes makes strong bonds with local residents and businesses on the Treasure Coast and Palm Beaches, booking parties, gatherings, business networking meetings, fundraisers and corporate functions. We certainly could not do it without Wes. “I love working with these folks,” stated Wes. “Especially the non-profit organizations. They donate so much of their lives to such noble causes, I respect them so much. The very least I can do is to work as hard as they do for the betterment of our communities.” We are proud to have Wes Tuten on our team and, quite frankly, we would be lost without him ! Thank you Wes for your service to our country and now, to our Sister Centers. ALL NEW FISHBOWL FRENZY!! Remember how much fun it was when the Carnival came to town ? He moved to Port St. Lucie from Kentucky, started bowling and landed a job as Head Mechanic right here ! His skills truly go from the back to the front of the house making him a very special person. Tony also bowled his 9th 300 two weeks later, and has 2 - 800’s to his credit. Great bowling Tony!! Sister Center, Jupiter Lanes, boasts an All American Inter Collegiate Champion, bowling every Thursday evening on the NFL League, Miss Jenn Boisselle. Jenn Boisselle traveled all over the world as her father, a Colonel in the Army, transferred from location to location. Born in Wiesbaden, Germany, Jenn landed in Brandon, Florida to finish her high school education at Bloomingdale HS. During high school she bowled in Junior League Programs and eventually met our manager, Sandy Finkelstein at Shore Lanes in Merritt Island. Sandy immediately knew talent when he saw it and realized Jenn was the "real deal". Jenn attended the University of Central Florida majoring in Health Sciences Pre Clinical, her first steps to becoming a pharmacist. As a collegiate bowler at UCF Jenn won multiple National Collegiate titles. A valued member of the Junior Team USA, Jenn came in 5th out of 1,100 national rated bowlers at the 2010 USBC Team USA trials. In 2010 Jenn won the USBC Inter collegiate Championship and was one of the members of the 2009/10 first place team collegiate All American and the Bowling Writers Association of Americas "Collegiate Player of the year". As if this isn't enough, she also won 2 Gold Medals (trios and team) and 2 Bronze Medals (singles and doubles) at the 2009 Pan American Bowling Confederation Youth Championship in Bogota, Columbia. In August of 2013 Jupiter Lanes Manager, Sandy Finkelstein, was on shift when he noticed a young lady bowling with a very recognizable style. Sandy went down to take a closer look and yes, it was that talent he first saw at Merritt Lanes years ago. Jenn became at league bowler at Jupiter Lanes. The first season she bowled a 858 series: 279, 300, and 279 making her the highest scoring lady bowler in the State of Florida. Along with attending the School of Pharmacy Science at Nova University, Jenn bowls every Thursday night at Jupiter Lanes with the NFL League. Her current average is 235 which means she bowls 705 series every time out of the gate. Jenn Boisselle is potentially in the top 10 women bowlers in the country. Congratulations Jenn Boisselle and please know we are thrilled to have you in our ranks! BUNNY RABBIT BASKETS MULTIPY FOR CHILDREN A little volunteer arts and crafts session by the some youth bowlers and their parents. Devereaux Community Based Care has over 1300 local kids from Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. Devereux is responsible for managing child abuse prevention, family preservation, foster care and adoptions programs. More info: www.devereuxcbc.org Hibiscus Children’s Center has been serving the Treasure Coast by saving children's lives for three decades. Hibiscus has been providing a safe haven to children removed from their homes due to abuse, abandonment or neglect at the Hibiscus Tilton Family Shelter in Jensen Beach and the Hibiscus Village in Vero Beach. A wonderful fact about bowling, little known by the general public, is millions of dollars are raised each year for local and national charities in bowling centers. Bowling fundraisers are popular because everyone that participates generally has a great time. These events are not affected by weather and are relatively easy to set up and operate. Most importantly, they do generate funds. The most popular formats are simple. The charity or organization books a time and day when the center anticipates it will not be busy. In exchange, the center provides a discount as a charitable contribution. The charity sells tickets and organizes the event, including ancillary fund-raising activities like Chinese auctions, raffles, 50/50's, bake sales, etc. The secret for success is for the charity to get as many people as possible to not just buy tickets, but to attend. The revenue from the ancillary fund-raising activities is important to maximize the funds raised. Few places in South Florida have the combination of scope, size and staff to put it all together as your community center for family and fun. We are focused on improving the lives of all residents of our community. We are proud to serve as the venue for these worthwhile events, and eagerly look forward to hosting your next fundraiser. Please feel free to contact Wes Tuten Community Coordinator of Sister Centers Jupiter and Saint Lucie Lanes on his direct line 772-333-0339 or by email westuten@gmail.com. APRIL’S FEATURED SPONSORS !
