Department of Social work A Report on Induction Programme, June-2015 The Department of Social Work organized a five day long Induction Programme for MSWCCP and MSWHRDM students from 9/6/2015 to 13/6/2015. The objectives behind this induction programme were: To help students get familiarized with the course, University and Departmental activities. To support students to prepare effectively to meet the demands of their course and eventual career path To provide information on respective roles of students and teaching faculty To encourage students to disclose their needs and seek appropriate support To help students to acquire the basic concepts of the discipline of the University On the first day, Dr Victor Paul inaugurated the course and discussed about the Departmental Vision and Mission statements. Later, Dr. Sojan Antony Dr. Princy conducted ice breaking activity for both the groups of students. In the afternoon Dr Hemalatha gave introduction to Social Work curriculum, Research and Online course –MOOC. Dr Victor Paul and Dr. Sheeja gave introduction to teaching/learning methodology; especially on project based learning through self study mode, skill and competency building and Journal club activities. Later, the students were divided into smaller groups and were taken on campus tour. The senior students accompanied them. On the second day, Prof. Mathew CP and Prof. Bharathi gave presentation on Field exposure visits, internships, cross cultural field study and report writing. Later, panel discussion with internship specialists was organized. Ms. Laveena Micheal from BEL and Mr. Vivek from Jockey International interacted with MSWHRDM students and Dr. Naveen from Headstreams and Dr. Tony Sam George from Department of Psychology, CU interacted with MSWCCP students. Dr. Bino Thomas distributed the induction document to the students and had a discussion and also clarified doubts regarding induction programme. All the students left to BOSCO in the afternoon for an orientation visit. Prof. Mathew CP accompanied the group. The third day started with introduction to Centre for Social Action by Mr. Ranji Kumar Singh. Mr. Vinay from CSA also introduced on concepts of child sponsorship, student volunteering and other internal engagements. Later, the students got opportunity to interact with four alumni of the department, Mr. Jaikumar, Ms. Noopura, Ms. Trina and Ms. Anila. They shared their experiences and also advised the junior group to make best use of all the resources available to them in the campus. The students were taken to CSA site- Janakiram Layout in the afternoon. Dr.Sheeja along with few senior students accompanied the group. On the fourth day, Dr. Victor Paul had an interaction with the students and conveyed department’s expectation from the students with respect to academic, extracurricular and cocurricular performances. Dr. Hemalatha and Dr. Sheeja conducted group discussion on the topic ‘why social work is a profession, not a vocation’. Later, students were addressed by their respective class teachers on time table, discipline, dress code and other related areas. In the afternoon, HRDM students were taken to Shahi Exports by Prof. Bharathi and CCP students were taken to Sandhya Kirana by Dr. Sojan for orientation visit. On the fifth day, Dr. Sheeja oriented students on extension activity followed by short interaction with class counselor, placement office and admission office. Later, students were introduced to the social responsibilities of the University. An orientation visit to Parivarthana project and water management project was organized. Dr. Sojan and Dr. Princy accompanied the group. A valedictory function to the Induction programme was organized on 29/06/2015. Dr. Victor Paul briefly spoke on the whole induction programme and also shared the future plans and major activities of the department. Dr. Mallika Krishnaswamy, Dean, expressed her happiness for conducting such programme for the new joiners and wished them good luck. Later Prof. Jonhy Joseph, COE and Director of CSA spoke about the importance of Social Work and students’ proactive participation and contribution to CSA activities. A documentary on CSA was shown to the students.
