very friendly and caring atmosphere for all our residents.
Our substantial Victorian House sits in the heart of the
Meon Valley, surrounded by six acres of our own grounds.
At Purbeck House we specialise in the care of clients with mental
health needs including Dementia. Each client receives person centred
care where fulfilling individual needs is our priority.
In both October 2008 and November 2009, Purbeck House received a
“Three Star Excellent Service” award from the Care Quality Commission.
The same organisation adjudged Purbeck House to be
“meeting all the essential standards of quality and safety”
in its January 2012 and February 2013 unannounced inspections.
Purbeck House is conveniently situated near to the shops of

Types of care homes
'Care home' is the overall term for any home that
offers residents 24 hour day care. All care homes
offer residents help with personal care, such as
bathing and dressing, and some also provide
nursing care from qualified nurses.
Care homes without nursing used to be called
residential homes.
They offer the level of personal care that a
competent, caring relative might provide and staff
may, when necessary, ask a community nurse to
visit to give a resident the kind of help that they
would get if they were living in their own home,
for example changing dressings or giving injections.
Care homes with nursing used to be called
nursing homes.
They must employ qualified nursing staff and
ensure that there is adequate nursing cover 24
hours a day.
A home's registration certificate shows details of
specialist care they offer.
There are some care homes offering both
types of care.These take residents whether or
not they need nursing care.These homes may be
suitable for couples where only one partner
requires nursing.

Government policy on palliative and end of life care
recommends that all care homes should be able to
provide this type of care across all existing care

form of a report on its website www.cqc.org.uk

Care home associations
Some home owners choose to belong to local or
national care home associations.These groups give
support to members and set standards for the
homes that belong. NCF membership is from the

Short stays
A G in this column indicates the homes that may
take people for short periods as well as long term.
Short stays may be referred to as respite care,
meaning a period of care away from home for the
resident and a break for the carer. Sometimes people
need a short stay in a care home to convalesce after
being in hospital.
Some homes have designated respite beds, others
will only take people for short stays if there happens
to be a bed available.
Day care for non-residents
Formal day care for non-residents is a specially
organised programme of activities, sometimes in a
separate day centre.
Informal day care for non-residents means that they
join in the normal daily activities in the home.

Extra Care Housing
Extra-Care Housing, sometimes known as Assisted Living,
combines the comfort, security and support of a 24/7
dedicated care team normally found in Residential Care
with the personal choice and independence of sheltered
housing. Every resident has their own apartment, with their
own front door, one or two bedrooms, living room, kitchen,
and fully accessible bathroom. Within each scheme you will
find people with a range of needs from those who are able
to live more independently to those who require higher
levels of care and their partners.
Extra-Care housing is designed to allow you to live as independently as
you can in a home of your own for as long as possible. That means that as
your care needs, or the care needs of your partner, change the amount of
care and support you receive will change with it. Extra-Care is designed
for people with a housing need and a social care need, aged 55 and
over living as either a couple or as single person with a range of care
and support needs. There are care staff on site 24/7 and most schemes
provide an on-site restaurant, social facilities and therapy provisions such
as assisted bathrooms, hairdressers or therapy rooms.
There are new Extra-Care schemes in Andover, Gosport, Fleet, Basingstoke
and Chandlers Ford, with new schemes planned across the county.
Hampshire County Council, with the help of grants from the Homes and
Community Agency has partnered with Borough Councils and Registered
Housing Providers in order to contribute towards the development of new
Extra-Care schemes. Further new schemes will be opening in a phased
way to provide complete county coverage by 2019. With more schemes
starting soon, Extra-Care is an option that should be considered if you:
• feel that you may need the peace of mind and safety of a dedicated
care team

• need help with some activities, or support coping with dementia, but

grandchildren over to stay
