REPORTING ERROR MESSAGES ON THE PORTAL: If during a quiz, exam, or other activity in the portal,
you receive an error message of any kind, please take a “screen shot” of the message and include it in an email
to your instructor as soon as possible. To take a screen shot, press the “print screen” button on your computer
keyboard and then open a word document or power point document or an email and right click with your mouse
and select “paste” to insert the screen shot into whatever you have selected. Include as much information as
possible in your error reporting email, including the course, assignment or other activity in which the error
occurred, the date and time and what web browser you were using (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari,
etc.) NOTE: The first thing you should do (after capturing a screen shot of your error message, etc.,) is to log
out and then log back into the Portal – this often resets your configurations and eliminates the error.
If you are having trouble with “My ASUN Portal” please notify your instructor and refer to:
http://www.asun.edu/tech You can also contact ITS (Information Technology Services) directly at 870-5127783 or its@asun.edu.
WHAT TO DO TO GET STARTED
1. Print and Read this entire syllabus!
2. Become familiar with the various pages for this Course in the My ASUN Portal (use the Getting Started
Guide in the Handouts Section on the Coursework Main Page). Use the navigation bar on the left to go
from coursework to discussions, etc.
3. Take the Prequiz (which covers how to use the portal and the contents of this syllabus!) You do not

Coursework:
Please Note: Because the summer semester is quite BRIEF in length, to cover all required content, you
will have an assignment due every day! Be sure to work ahead and keep up with ALL upcoming
assignments – if you have questions please let me know. See the detailed schedule at the end of the
syllabus.
All coursework is accessed through the “Coursework” page in the My ASUN Portal; assignments are available
now, or will be available soon, and will remain available until the scheduled cut-off/due dates. The Midterm

BIOL 2103-Microbiology Online
Summer II 2015 – Traci Hudson
Exam and Final Exam are only available during the time span denoted in the course schedule. Check your
ASUN student e-mail, the My ASUN Portal course pages, and your syllabus regularly (DAILY) to make sure
you do not miss any due dates. You may work ahead—just be sure that you understand the material before you
go too far.
Be sure you watch your time as you go and be mindful of due date and time cut-offs: for EXAMPLE, if
you have 45 minutes to complete a quiz, then be sure to start the quiz at LEAST 45 minutes before the
due time.
Prequiz
The first quiz you take is the Prequiz – it is designed to familiarize you with the course and syllabus. It is worth
20 points and counts towards your total quiz points earned. You do not have to have your textbook or content
knowledge to complete this quiz. You DO need your syllabus!
Learn Smart Chapter Homework (completed using McGraw-Hill’s Connect Plus modules online)
Your textbook has online learning tools that are very good at helping you gain concept mastery! One of those
tools is “Learn Smart” (LS) and is used in this course as homework to help you prepare for each chapter quiz.
These assignments vary in the length of time, depending on how much studying and reading of the chapter you
have done before hand. Learn Smart is designed to help you focus on what you don’t know and master those
concepts before you go on. It is a COMPLETION grade. Either you do it all receive a completed grade per
chapter assignment, or you do not. YOU SHOULD COMPLETE EACH CHAPTER LEARN SMART
ASSIGNMENT BEFORE ATTEMPTING THE CHAPTER QUIZ!
Note: If you did not receive a Connect Plus Access Code when you purchased your textbook, you need to do so
ASAP! Access codes may be purchased through the ASUN bookstore OR online directly from McGraw-Hill.
Chapter Quizzes, Midterm, and Final Exams
Your chapter quizzes and exams are available though the Portal under “Coursework” and each one has a
scheduled due date with an ending time of 11:55 p.m. Late submission of quizzes is allowed, however, you
will be assessed a 10% penalty for each day it is late (except the midterm and final exams - see below). You
may work ahead – just be sure that you understand the material before you go too far.
Quizzes and exams have a time-limit – (60 minutes for each quiz; 4 hours for each exam) be sure to monitor
this and not run out of time before you finish (once started, the quiz timer cannot be paused)! If you have any
questions, concerns, or problems, notify me immediately via email or voicemail to my office phone.
The first chapter quiz is set so that you can take it 2x and count the highest score—after that, you will only
be able to take each quiz once, so make sure you are ready and that you have plenty of time once you begin
(once started the quiz timer cannot be paused).
You have the opportunity to earn 380 points through chapter quizzes. However, your total quiz points will be
counted out of 340 points. The last 2 quizzes are marked as “extra credit”. Completing them will enable you to
earn bonus points toward your grade. Although completing the quiz is not required, this chapter will still be
covered on the final exam.
DISCUSSION Components to Class Assignments:
Missed discussions cannot be made up or completed late for credit. After the due date has passed, the
discussion board will not be available.
To receive full discussion credit for each discussion assignment, a minimum of 3 discussion postings is
required on the proper discussion board.
BIOL 2103-Microbiology Online
Summer II 2015 – Traci Hudson


Your first posting will be your response to the discussion topic/question presented by the instructor posted
as a new topic/thread for conversation.
 Click on the correct chapter discussion board and then click on "Add a Post/new thread" in the top right
corner.
Your second and third postings must be a reply to the posting of another student or instructor.
 Open another student's posting and then click on "Reply" in the top right corner.
Class Projects:
*The following will be available on the My ASUN Portal for you to download, complete, and upload:
Class Project #1 – Ebola Outbreak! (Requires that you watch videos from PBS, etc.)
Class Project #2 – Vaccination (Each student will be assigned a specific vaccine the 2nd week of class)
Steps to Successfully Completing a Class Project:
1. Include your first and last name in the file name for the Microsoft Word Document you submit. (worth 1 pt.) If
the assignment contained specific questions, use that file to type in your answers.
2. Type in your name in the header of the document. (worth 1 pt)
3. Make sure your answers are distinguishable from the questions.
4. CITE ANY SOURCES YOU USE TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS! (Use APA format.)
Proper citation of any sources used is important—even if you only use your textbook, you MUST cite
that information to not be plagiarizing.
a. Use parenthetical citations in each of your researched answers.
b. Have a complete Works Cited page at the end of your document that includes ALL sources you used for ANY of the
questions.
c. The APA format handout is available on the course webpage in My ASUN Portal. If you are still unclear on this
format, contact me, check a reference book in the library, or look online for guidelines! (MS Word 2007 also has a great
built in reference tool!)
d. Online citations should be from a reliable source: be sure to include the full web address and the date you accessed it
when you list it in your Work Cited page at the end.
5. Write ALL answers are in YOUR OWN words! Quoting long answers from web pages or other resources, even
with citations, does not constitute answers being in your own words. Paraphrase well!
6.
If a question asks your opinion on a topic or situation, you do not have to list a citation unless you use specific facts or examples
from sources to help you formulate your answer.
Upload your completed document via the My ASUN Portal Assignment page by the due date. Be sure to
“Finalize” your submission for grading. Late submissions receive 10% off the grade for each day late.
8. DISCUSS in the My ASUN Portal during a timeframe beginning at the due date and continuing through the next 3 days, unless
7.
otherwise stated in the specific case study directions. Discussions must be in your own words and pertinent to the content of the
class project. To receive full discussion credit, a minimum of 3 discussion postings is required. Specific directions regarding the
discussion requirements will be included with each case study instruction and information page.
FOR ALL ASSIGNMENTS: Short answer and discussion question answers must be in
your own words, and not copied word-for-word from the textbook or any other source.
Answers not in your OWN words may result in ZERO points being earned for the
question or the entire assignment. See the academic dishonesty section below and in the
course catalog for further details.
INSTRUCTOR POLICIES
How to Contact me
Email is preferred or office phone calls are fine as well; both make up the official means of individual student–
instructor communication for this class. I strive to answer all emails within 24 hours (often much sooner)
during school days; I do check my email on weekends and school holidays, but not as regularly.
Late Work / Make-up Work Policy
BIOL 2103-Microbiology Online
Summer II 2015 – Traci Hudson
Late-submitted assignments will be assessed a 10% late penalty. Exceptions may be made for extreme
circumstances beyond the student’s control and may require written documentation/excuses. Assignments for
chapters covered on the Midterm Exam may be made up through the date the midterm exam is due; assignments
for chapters covered on the Final Exam may be made up through the date the final exam is due.
Assignments will be accepted after the due date has passed, but you will be Assessed a 10% Late Penalty!
You will not be able to complete the midterm or final exam late for any credit. Exceptions WILL be made
ONLY if the My ASUN Portal system is “down”—however, disruptions due to issues with personal computers
are NOT valid excuses—computers are available on campus and at public libraries—DO NOT wait until the
last minute!
Attendance Policy
Students are expected to check their ASUN email and log into the ASUN Portal regularly (multiple times per
week). Students who fall behind may be considered inactive and denied access to the course until they provide
the instructor with proof of extenuating circumstances that justify reinstatement into the course.
Excused Absences constitute life events that are beyond the student’s control (hospitalization, court, etc.) and
require documentation, and the instructor must be notified BEFORE the class (via email or voicemail). (Failure
to keep up with the semester schedule does not qualify as a catastrophic event/circumstance.)
Teaching/Learning Methods
This course will be taught through web-based lecture, reading, and through doing critical thinking and problemsolving exercises. The lecture notes that would use during the on-campus lecture for this course are posted in
the handouts section of the class page in the My ASUN Portal; these should help you in summarizing each
chapter and in preparing for each quiz and test; however, as with any online course, your textbook is your
greatest resource and you regulate your learning—don’t hesitate to ask me for help or clarification on any
subject matter!
