Written expression is enhanced through vocabulary-building activities, and students are guided through the stages of creative and academic writing using literary models as the point of departure. Areas of investigation include phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, lexicon, bilingualism, dialectology, and language change. 6 Italian Conversation (.25) Maria Grazia De Angelis M 1:35-2:40 130 Mexican Cinema Alvaro Ramirez MWF 4:00-5:05 21 Intensive Elementary Italian Maria Grazia De Angelis MWF 11:45-12:50 T 11:30-12:35 Students will study Mexican films, which are emblematic of the sociopolitical changes that have radically transformed Mexican society in the last half of the 20th Century. Our analysis will concentrate on the ways in which a monolithic Mexican identity was invented in the early years of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, and how this identity would come to be contested and redefined in films such as Rojo amanecer, Esmeralda, de noche vienes, Danzón, La ley de Herodes, Amores Perros, Todo el poder, Y tu mamá también, and Amarte duele. These films represent a Mexico where gender, political, historical, and cultural myths are explored in order to define a Mexican identity that is multicultural and which does not shy away from the consequences of a globalized world. Students will read a wide range of genres and representative authors of Spanish-speaking America and identify and discuss themes such as political, social and historical dimension of literature and its role in the development “identities”; its colonial legacy; and the place race, class, and gender hold in its construction.
