A Word from the Board of Education
Another successful and memorable school year has
come to an end with each of our schools holding its
moving up ceremony, culminating with the High School
Commencement. 230 high school students proudly
received their diplomas and are journeying to the
next phase of their lives, well prepared to meet the
challenges that await them.
Thanks to our district leaders, dedicated and caring
educators, support staff, parents and community members, Eastchester continues to thrive as a high performing, continuously improving learning environment. From
all indicators, we are unwavering in our commitment to
a quality education, our satisfaction levels are high,
and our children are soaring.
The parent community has played a central and pivotal
role in the improvement of our schools. Since I was
first appointed to serve on the School Board in 2004, I
have heard from parent leaders about the need for more
instructional space, improvement of our facilities and the
development of expanded educational programs for all
of Eastchester’s children. These concerns have intensified as school enrollment continues to grow. Over the
past 12 years, we have had an increase of 1000 children to bring our current student body to almost 3300
students, with many families choosing to move into
the District for our wonderful schools.
In response, the Board has renovated and expanded
our facilities for those in grades K-8. We are now at a
crossroad and need to ensure that the High School,
serving more than 900 students in grades 9-12, also
affords our children an education appropriate for the
demands of the 21st century.
Therefore, the Board Facilities Committee, including
members of the community, has recommended that
Eastchester High School be expanded and renovated,
with an emphasis on providing new classrooms that can
enhance STEM teaching (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) as well as add much needed science
classrooms and lab space, physical education space,
cafeteria space and a renovated auditorium.
Information on the needs of the High School has been
presented to parents, the PTAs and the BOE Community Relations Committee over the past few months.

It has been a privilege and a pleasure to serve as your
Board President. I look forward to another defining year
as we continue to collaborate in the ongoing enhancement of the Eastchester Schools.

EASTCHESTER EXCELLENCE
Eastchester High School Update
Eastchester High School is aged and in dire need of an
update. Therefore, the Eastchester Board of Education is
considering a bond to renovate and expand the building.

EHS, the flagship school of the District: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alvj5EZvUBg. This will also be played
on the District cable stations. Over the summer,
the Board will work with KG&D Architects to develop
designs, estimated costs and a timeline that will be
presented to the community in the fall.
News from the Eastchester Eagles Sports Club
The largest private fund raising initiative in the history of
the Eastchester School district, spearheaded by the Eastchester Sports Club and Eastchester High School Athletic
Department, has exceeded its goal of raising $325,000 to
install bleachers and a press box to complement the new
turf field. As of the end of June, total community commitments from families, alumni and organizations stand at
$330,760. An additional allocation of $12,240 from the
school district brings the grand total of all commitments
to $343,000 which is $18,000 over the goal.
The district has approved the project to move forward and
architects will be working this summer to get plans
approved through the State Education Dept. Many thanks
to those who participated to make this fund raising project
a great success.
Italian Poetry Contest
EHS students of foreign language teacher Lucrezia Lindia attended the Italian Poetry Contest held at NYU in
May. Francesca Bellizzi won the silver medal for Level 2,
category Non-Native and Giulia Barone the silver medal
for Level 2, category Native. Victoria Muriel received the
bronze medal for Level 3 Italian, category non-native.

who opened the program by singing the Italian National

EASTCHESTER EXCELLENCE
EMS International Night
The Middle School International Club hosted its second
annual International Night in June, with more than 18
countries represented in foods, cultures and traditions.
Foreign language teachers Lina Astarita, Josephine Logan,
Katherine Shay and Mary Leptak, in collaboration with parent volunteers and students, created an evening of cultural
importance under the theme of the “Imagine” song by
John Lennon.
The cafeteria was transformed into a language/heritage
rich environment where parents and students dressed in
traditional costumes and served a delectable array of
foods. Then the evening moved to the auditorium where
students performed a combination of dances, songs,
piano performances and poems representing cultures
from around the globe (Japanese, Chinese, Ukranian,
Albanian, Armenian, German, Irish, Greek, Brazilian,
Italian, Mexican, Latin American, French and more).
In addition to the support of the parent volunteers,
financial backing was provided by the Eastchester
School Foundation, the EMSPTA and the ETA.
Eastchester Eagles Sports Club Sign up for 2015-16
The Eastchester Eagles Sports Club supports all of the
district’s athletes with its efforts to raise money for scholarships, programs and equipment.Parents of athletes at
the modified, JV and Varsity levels are urged to support

The Anne Hutchinson School was the recipient of a Loukoumi Foundation Make a Difference Award at a star studded gala held in celebration of Loukoumi’s 10th Anniversary. Loukoumi is the main character in a series of books
by Eastchester resident Nick Katsoris. Celebrity guests
included Oscar winner Olympia Dukakis, Tony Nominee
Constantine Maroulis (Rock of Ages), and FOX-5 anchor
Nick Gregory. Each year, Make a Difference with Loukoumi unites more than 40,000 children to make a difference
through volunteer work or philanthropic activities.
First Grade Learns About Weather Cause and Effect
Waverly teachers Fran Rubenstein and Mari Doyle collaborated on a program to help students improve writing skills.
Using Common Core standards with graphic organizers, they
studied “How the Weather Affects Us,” as they learned about
the drought in California and flooding in Texas. The teachers
used the smartboard to review newspaper articles and news
reports. The students became very engaged in the project
and wrote letters to California Governer Jerry Brown with
suggestions to solve the problem.

Music Boosters
The newly formed Music Boosters have built a membership of
130 and have forged avenues for supporting music education
throughout grades K-12. Among their achievements, they created the band directors’ vision for the MS/HS Jazz Band Concert
by transforming the MS Cafeteria into a Jazz Café with donations
of linens and refreshments, and by darkening the room thanks to
20 donated stand lights. In addition, all AH and GV Band, Chorus
and Orchestra members were issued certificates for their commitment to the study of instrumental and choral music. More exciting

(HAC) if you have not already done so. Sign up at

instructions for creating a HAC account on the District web site. The information available through HAC
includes your child’s schedule, interim progress reports,
report cards, MS and HS attendance, transportation
information and contact information (parents can e-mail
teachers using Home Access. If you have any questions
