Topics include communications, safety, patients’ rights, personal care, vital signs, elimination, nutrition, emergencies, rehabilitation, and mental health. ISBN 978-1-60425-031-2 Mandatory Paperwork All mandatory paperwork must be correctly submitted on or before the date of test 4 or the student will not be eligible to take the final exam and will be exited from the program and receive a grade of NG. NO EXCEPTIONS 1. Copies of 2 official signatures bearing IDs, with matching names, one of which must be a U.S. government issued photo ID and the other must be a U.S. social security card. 2. Correctly completed Wake Tech CC physical form 3. Copy of current CPR card (Healthcare Provider) 4. Copy Wake Tech CC photo ID Grading Scale - S=78 – 100, NG= below 77 Unit Tests - 80% 1. Tests must be taken with #2 pencils. Pencils will not be provided. 2. Students who miss a scheduled test, must take a make-up test within 2 class periods outside of scheduled class time. Failure to arrange a time with the instructor to make-up a test within 2 class periods will result in a score of “0” for the test. 3. All tests may be taken orally, with proof of need. At least 1 week prior notice is required. Final Exam - 10% (MUST SCORE 78 OR BETTER) Attendance and Professionalism - 10% Clinical Component – Pass/Fail The student must have an overall 78 theory average without the benefit of rounding, have passed the written final exam with a 78 or better and have correctly performed all skills in lab to progress to clinical. Cheating: Cheating, forgery, and plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in automatic dismissal. Class/Lab Attendance 1. Students will be considered tardy 1 minute after class starts. 2. A 4 point deduction will be taken from the student’s attendance and professionalism grade for each partial hour or hour missed for lecture classes. It is mandatory that the corresponding chapter’s make-up work from the workbook be completed and turned in to instructor within 2 class periods of time missed. No make-up work will be accepted during the 3rd class period after time missed. Failure to turn in make-up work will result in automatic dismissal from the program and a grade of NG. NO EXCEPTIONS. The work will be graded for points credit as follows: • 2 points credit/hour for 95-100 • 1 point credit/hour for 78-94 • no credit/hour for 77 or below 3. For each hour or partial hour missed from lab, a 3 pt deduction will be taken from the attendance and professionalism grade. This deduction cannot be made up. All skills must be successfully checked off prior to entering the clinical setting. 4. Dismissal from the program and a grade of NG will result if a student accumulates more than 8 hours of lab absences. 10-11 1 Classroom/Lab conduct: 1. The student is expected to behave in a mature manner. Class or lab disruption will result in dismissal for the day or dismissal from the program. 2. Every student is expected to participate in all lab activities. Inability to correctly participate in lab for any reason, will result in dismissal for the day or dismissal from the program. 3. At the end of the lab session, all students are required to clean the lab and return all materials to their proper places or receive deductions from attendance grade. 4. Fingernails must be short to participate in lab. The student will not be allowed to enter the lab with long fingernails and receive deductions from attendance grade. 5. Students are to dress in modest clothing. This means refraining from wearing revealing shirts, shorts, and skirts. 6. No Eating and drinking in the class or lab. 7. No use of cell phones or other electrical/musical devices. 8. No children allowed on campus. Clinical information and criteria will be reviewed prior to clinical. Clinical Dress Code 1. top/pants – neat, clean, wrinkle free navy blue scrub. A solid shirt may be worn under the scrub top 2. shoes - WHITE, non-canvas, closed toe, closed heel, 3. socks/hose - white (no portion of the leg or ankle should be visible) 4. hair - must be neat, clean, and modestly arranged so not to touch the collar 5. make-up - must be kept to a minimal, perfumes, colognes - are not allowed 6. nails - must be short, clean, and free of any nail polish or artificial covering of any type 7. tattoos - must be covered 8. jewelry - watch, med.-alert necklace/bracelet, a modest single ring, and a single pair of post earrings in the ears are the only visible jewelry allowed 9. equipment needed – watch with a second hand, stethoscope, Wake Tech photo ID, black pen Technical Standards for the Nursing Assistant Student 1. Critical Thinking: Nursing Assistant students should possess critical thinking ability sufficient for clinical judgment. For example: The student must also be able to control emotional responses to events that occur in clinical situations. 2. Interpersonal Skills: Nursing Assistant students shall possess interpersonal abilities sufficient to interact with individuals, families, groups, etc. from a variety of social, emotional, cultural, and intellectual backgrounds. 3. Communication Skills: Nursing Assistant students shall possess communication abilities sufficient for interaction with others in verbal and written form. 4. Mobility: Nursing Assistant students shall possess physical abilities to move from room to room and maneuver in small spaces, squat, stand and walk for extensive periods of time. 5. Motor Skills: Nursing Assistant students shall possess gross and fine motor abilities sufficient to provide safe and effective nursing care. 6. Hearing: Nursing Assistant Students shall possess auditory ability sufficient to monitor and observe for health needs. For example: Hear monitor alarms, emergency signals, blood pressure sounds, cries for help, abnormal sounds. 7. Visual: Nursing Assistant students shall possess visual ability sufficient for observation and color distinction. (Wake Tech has adopted vision requirements of 20/30 or better in both eyes) 8. Weight-Bearing: Nursing Assistant students shall possess ability to lift and manipulate/move 45-50 pounds. For example: Moves and positions residents/patients. 9. Occupational Exposures: Nursing Assistant students may be exposed to communicable disease and /or body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and shall use appropriate precautions at all times.
