1. PREREQUISITES:
Students in this class must have taken and passed MAC 1105 or its equivalent.
2. TEXTBOOK:
Algebra and Trigonometry by Sullivan, 9th edition. Student Solutions Manual available online
(w3.fiu.edu/math). You do not have to buy it.
Option 1- (recommended)- Buy the book that comes with the MyMathLab student Access Code at
the FIU bookstore. New: $226.45; Used (if available): $169.85
Option 2- Textbook in Loose Leaf format; does not come with the MyMathLab Access Code. New:
$116.55 Used: $87.40. You would have to buy the student Access Code separately either at the FIU
bookstore or online when you register for MyMathLab. Student Access Code separately costs $85.80.
Option 3- (less expensive)- Buy only the student Access Code to MyMathlab and access the textbook
online from this site on the web. If you do not mind reading the textbook chapters from your
computer monitor, this is a good option for you. You should print excerpts from the book to bring to
class as needed.
How to register in MyMathLab:
1- Log on to http://www.pearsonmylab.com and where it says “Register”, click on “student”.
2- Enter the Course ID which is matas68556.
3- Create a Pearson account (unless you have one from before in which case you sign in with your username
and password).
4- Enter your student Access Code; if you do not have one, purchase it here with a credit card ($85.80).

If you are waiting for financial aid and need a temporary access code, go to
http://www.mymathlab.com/sites/default/files/TEMP%20ACCESS%20OCT%202011.pdf
(If you used this book before, you may be able to use your previous student access code).

3. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course covers the following topics: trigonometric functions, identities, conditional
equations, polar coordinates, vectors, polar graphs, complex numbers and DeMoivre’s
Theorem.
4. TESTING AND GRADING:
There will be four (4) tests during the semester given during regular class time and one (1) final
examination which is comprehensive and mandatory. NO MAKE-UPS will be given. The lowest test
grade may be replaced with the grade in your final exam. There will be no extra-credit assignments.
Your grade will be computed in the following manner:
The average of the four test grades:
Online Homework Assignments in MML
Final examination:
60%
15%
25%
Grade scale: 90-100 A; 87-89 A-; 84-86 B+; 80-83 B; 77-79 B-; 74-76 C+; 67-73 C; 64-66 D+; 60-63 D;
57-59 D-; 0-56 F.
An I (Incomplete) is given only if you are unable to take the final examination because of an
emergency and have a passing grade up to that point. You must submit written proof of your
emergency. In addition, a written contract needs to be signed by the student and the instructor prior
to the student receiving a grade of I.
5. REQUIRED MATERIALS FOR CLASS (in addition to the textbook):
1- Student Access Code to MyMathLab.
2- A scientific calculator (graphing calculators are not allowed), recommended: TEXAS INSTRUMENT
30X IIS SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR, $19.98 at the FIU bookstore.
3- Notebooks, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, and markers.
*All tests have to be taken with pencil, NOT INK. Tests done in ink will not be graded and will be
returned with a grade of zero. *
6. ATTENDANCE:
Attending class is the most important thing you can do to succeed in this class. Frequent absences will
impact your grade in a very negative way. Do not miss class unless you have a true emergency. You
must sign in on the attendance sheet each day the class meets. If you stop coming to class with the
intention to drop, make sure you do this before Monday, October 29th.
7. HOMEWORK (Online and offline):
The online homework counts as 15% of your grade. You must do these assignments during the period
of time they are open and before their due dates. Due dates for homework assignments will always
be the evening before the test on that material. Once an online assignment is closed, I will not reopen it. Doing all your homework assignments on a timely basis is the second most important thing
you can do to succeed in this class.
2
1-Online Homework (this is mandatory and counts towards your grade):
Your assigned online homework is done in MyMathLab, the online website. The course ID for this
course is matas68556. All of these assignments must be done on or before their due date. After the
due date, you will not have access to the assignment anymore, so, if you do not meet the deadline,
you will get a grade of zero in that particular assignment.
These assignments are graded immediately within the program. However, as long as the assignment
is open, you can re-do the assignment again and again to increase your score until you get 100%. This
must be your goal.
You will have access to me when doing the online homework by clicking on “Ask Your Instructor.” You
can continue on to the other questions as you wait for my help with this question. I commit to reply
to your e-mails or request for help from MyMathLab in less than 24 hours (except on week-ends). If
you click for help during the afternoon hours, chances are I will reply back to you right away.
*All of your online homework assignments should be submitted free of errors, with a perfect score of
100% because your grade in MyMathLab is 15% of your final grade in the class. *
I welcome all your questions from the homework either in class or sent to me online directly from
MyMathLab. I will always respond to your e-mails within 24 hours.
2- Offline Homework – there are also additional, suggested homework exercises from the book
which do not count for a grade but you are encouraged to do as well. These are given in the class
schedule, down below, on pp 4-5.
8. HELP WITH THE CLASS:
You can get free math tutoring service by visiting our Mathematics Department webpage and clicking
on “Math Help” or by logging on directly to http://casgroup.fiu.edu/mathstatistics. You can also get
help while working within MyMathLab by means of the e-tutors, videos, and other similar, helpful
resources right in there. Get help the minute you find yourself not being able to understand the
material. Last but not least, you can always e-mail me for help when you are working in MML or at
any other time.
9. CELLULAR PHONES and other wireless devices:
Please, pay close attention to this policy. Cell phones, I-phones, I-pads, laptops, and any other
wireless communication devices are not allowed during class. All wireless phones must be turned off
during class time; NOT TURNED TO VIBRATE OR SILENT MODE. They must be turned off and put away
in your purse or bookbag. They cannot sit on your desk. They cannot be visible to you or me.
If your cell phone rings or buzzes, or if I see you texting during class, I will ask you to leave. If any
wireless device you own makes any sound/noise, during a test, you will have to leave the class and
will earn a grade of zero on that test. If you step outside during a regular lecture to take or make a
phone call, you will not be allowed back in class.
3
For the welfare of the class and your classmates, please be cooperative and mindful of this policy.
While we are in class, we must have our full 100% attention to the activities at hand. If you have an
emergency situation that requires you to be on call, please let me know at the beginning of the class.
10. FOOD, CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR, GENERAL ETIQUETTE:
1- No food or drinks (except water) are allowed in the classroom.
2- Proper behavior and respectful language is expected within the classroom at all times.
3- Any conduct that interferes with the teaching-learning process may cause the student to be
removed from the class and subjected to disciplinary action. Some examples of unacceptable
behavior are: texting during class, having your cellphone(or equivalent) go off in class, stepping
outside the class to make or receive a phone call, chatting, exiting and entering the room during
the class lecture, being chronically late, packing and/or leaving early, before class is finished.
