Iran Trade mission Trade mission to Tehran, Iran 24-31 may 2015 This trade mission is meant for companies, registered in The Netherlands, active in the areas of agriculture, animal husbandry and food production, The mission will take place in and around Tehran. With a population of nearly 80 million Iran has a large consumer market, twice as big as all of the littoral states of the Persian Gulf put together plus Saudi Arabia and Iraq. The geo-strategic location of the country has made it the most economical and safe transit route for land locked countries in Central Asia and the Caucasus. Seven free zones provide opportunities for foreign trade, commerce and investment. Iran is a country with a continental climate. Agriculture is one of the most important sectors of the Iranian economy, accounting for about 11% of GDP, 23% of the employed population and 15% of the foreign exchange revenues (nonoil exports). Agricultural and animal husbandry products have always provided the major non-oil export items such as pistachios, raisins and even carpets (the wool or silk used in them). About 20% of the land is arable. The main food-producing areas are in the Caspian region and in valleys of the northwest. Some northern and western areas support rain-fed agriculture, while other areas require irrigation for successful crop production. Animal husbandry consists mainly of sheep, goats, cows, horses and poultry. The whole supply chain is present in this industry; husbandry, insemination, meat, skin and wool industry. The food production sector employs over 16% of the total working population divided over approx. 13,000 companies. Important export products are confectionery products, milk products, tomato extract, fruit juices and concentrates, mineral water and pasta. Important import products are grain, oilseeds, oil, meat, sugar, beans, fruits, vegetables and milk products. Iran also imports food industry technology, processing and packaging equipment. The Netherlands has historically been a large trading partner of Iran. This economic bond dates back 400 years. Albeit the recent political situation has resulted in a decrease in trade volume, there has been reason for optimism regarding new agreements which may lead to a relief and lifting of sanctions. Moreover traditional trade such as agriculture and Food&Drink are not subject to any sanction. Companies in these sectors can freely export to and import from Iran without any restrictions.
