Please contact the Academic Success Center at asc@lander.edu or by calling 864-388-8308 (See reverse side for information on Foreign Language placement) FOREIGN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT GUIDELINES Is there a foreign language placement test? There is no placement test for the foreign language requirement. The Foreign Language faculty of the Department of English and Foreign Languages will review the student's high school transcript to determine initial placement in foreign languages if a student does not have 101 and 102 college-level foreign language credit. Incoming students who wish to study a language that they have not studied previously may enroll in the 101-level of that language. How are firsttime freshmen placed into a foreign language course? Foreign language placement is based on a student’s high school foreign language coursework. High school coursework will be reviewed based on the number of credits taken and the grades earned. Students may place out of the foreign language requirement (“pass”) or may be placed into the 101-102 sequence. Students who have taken more than 5 units of a foreign language should schedule an oral interview with a foreign language professor to continue studying in that language. Students bringing in 102 college level credit, AP, IB, and CLEP scores may place out of the university foreign language requirement. How are transfer students placed into a foreign language course? Transfer students will first be reviewed for foreign language transfer credits. Students transferring to Lander with no foreign language credits will be placed according to the first-time freshman guidelines (see above). Students seeking a second bachelor's degree are exempt from the foreign language requirement. If you transfer in Spanish 101 (with a “C” grade or better), you will only be required to take Spanish 102 to complete the University requirement in foreign language. If you transfer in a foreign language credit in 102 or higher (with a “C” grade or better), you satisfy the University requirement. What does it mean if I “Pass” the foreign language requirement? What if English is not my native language? You have met the University’s requirement for foreign language. You will need to take 6 hours of elective credit to replace the University’s foreign language requirement, which can include intermediate foreign language. Students whose native language is not English are exempt from the University requirement for foreign language. In this case, you will need to take 6 hours of elective credit for graduation in place of the language courses. If your first language is not English, please e-mail Dr. Carlos Mentley at cmentley@lander.edu with the following information: English is not my native language My native language is _____________ Full Name Lander ID# What if I have further questions?
