Riggi Directors of College Counseling School Description and History Curriculum Rutgers Preparatory School is an independent coeducational college preparatory day school whose campus borders the Raritan River just west of New Brunswick, New Jersey. The oldest independent school in New Jersey, Rutgers Prep was established in 1766 under the same charter which established Queens College, later Rutgers College and now Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. In 1957, the school reestablished itself as an institution independent of the University and moved to our current 35 acre campus in Franklin Township. In 1993, RPS was one of eight independent schools to be designated Blue Ribbon Schools by the US Department of Education. The school's enrollment totals 681 students in the Primary, Lower , Middle, and Upper Schools. The Upper School (9-12) has 330 students and a teaching faculty of 62. This year's senior class numbers 85. The school's student body commutes from a broad geographical area in central New Jersey, including rural Hunterdon and Monmouth counties to the west and south, and Somerset, Middlesex and Union counties nearer to the New York metropolitan area. This area is a "melting pot" with many first and second generation immigrant families, and our school community is a microcosm of this ethnic and economic diversity. In the Upper School, a full 39% of our students are students of color and for two thirds of the graduating class, both parents are employed. Rutgers Preparatory School offers a full college preparatory and Advanced Placement curriculum. Virtually all of our students go on to four-year colleges immediately upon graduation and our curriculum is designed to prepare them appropriately. Page two of this Profile presents a detailed description of our curriculum. This list includes all of the courses available over the past four years to the current seniors. GPA, Class Rank & Academic Honors We report letter grades but do not calculate class rank. The cumulative GPA we report is based on a 4.0 scale and is weighted for honors and A.P. courses. It includes only work completed at RPS and is calculated at the end of each academic year. Designations for academic honors are "Honors" and "Honors with Distinction." Honors is awarded to those students whose grades in all subjects are a "B" or higher. Honors with Distinction is awarded to those students whose grades are an "A-" or higher. Accreditation RPS is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and holds memberships in the National and New Jersey Associations of Independent Schools, the College Board, the Educational Records Bureau, and the National and New Jersey Associations of College Admission Counselors. UPPER SCHOOL CURRICULUM Twenty credits are required for a diploma, with five academic courses the basic load per term. Honors and Advanced Placement courses are indicated in boldface. Note: A.P. courses may be taken as an introductory course in that subject or as a second course, and school policy requires any student enrolled in an A.P. course to complete the exam for that subject. Because of Rutgers Prep's policy of allowing students access to an A.P. course in their first exposure to an academic discipline, results for Biology, European History, and US History, among others, represent primarily the work of students who are studying the subject for the first time. Further, school policy requires any student enrolled in an A.P. course to complete the exam for that subject. Due to scheduling challenges, it is not possible to enroll in all 18-22 A.P. courses offered. The most rigorous curriculum available to an Upper School student at RPS will typically include a total of 8-10 courses at the A.P. level during the student's time in the Upper School.
