Introduction to Classical Mythology

Spring 2013
Dear English 1 Accelerated student and parents,
Welcome to English 1 Accelerated at Maine South. We look forward to working with you this fall and introducing you to the
accelerated program.
As you know, the Maine South English Department requires its students to read two books in the summer. As a freshman
entering the accelerated program, you will read selections from Edith Hamilton’s Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and
Heroes as well as a book from the 2013 Summer Reading Choice Book List.
The chart below lists the selections from Edith Hamilton’s Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes that you will be
required to read this summer. There are several editions of this classic text, but the titles of the sections remain consistent
among them. Please use the table below and the text’s table of contents to guide your reading. During the first week of school,
there will be a test on only the readings noted at the bottom of this letter. To be successful, you will need to keep track of the
characters and plots of the stories. Some suggestions for doing this would be making annotations in your book and/or
creating graphic organizers.
Please bring Hamilton’s Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes with you to school on the first day of class as we will be
working with it the first few weeks of the school year and again later in the first quarter.
If you have questions, please feel free to e-mail the English Department Chair Matt Parrilli at mparrilli@maine207.org who will
answer your question or put you in touch with a member of the team. Again, we look forward to seeing you in August. Have a
relaxing and enjoyable summer!
Sincerely,
The English 1 Accelerated Team
