ARVA0101 Science 1.1 Describe, using appropriate language, scientific explorations of the chemical, physical and natural world. SCSC0101 ICT chart reference Application: Word processing Example: Keys simple data into prepared files, e.g. copies words to label pictures in a prepared file. Unit objectives This task is designed to enable students to: • • • • associate French words with pictures of the relevant objects, places and people use information and communications technology to label pictures of familiar objects, places and people use information and communications technology to select graphics to illustrate a given list of French words build French vocabulary of familiar objects, places and people. CSF Sample Units: Information and Communications Technology – Les animaux 2 Prior learning Students will need the following knowledge and skills to begin this unit: Information and communications technology (ICT) • • • use arrow tool and click and drag functions key-in letters and words save their completed work. LOTE (French) • • • recognise the selected written French words make associations between pictures and the relevant words correctly pronounce the selected words. Teacher notes The classroom activities in this unit are influenced by a range of factors, including the accessibility and location of computers, preferred teaching styles, students’ learning styles and time. For the specific vocabulary introduced in this unit a teacher word bank with animal names and pictures is provided. This can be used to assist with learning or revising the vocabulary. The word bank can be printed onto flashcards or enlarged on a photocopier for class activities. The unit may be linked to other activities such as pronunciation and written practise. Before commencing the activities, teachers introduce or revisit the vocabulary – les animaux – to help students to become familiar with the vocabulary. Students use the worksheets (pages 7–13) to work through activities. The worksheets are available as Microsoft Word files and can be modified as required. Some are designed specifically for students to use electronically while others could be distributed as handouts. Teachers may prefer to incorporate the ideas on the worksheets into their presentation of lessons. For Worksheets 3 and 5 (pages 9 and 11) teachers provide copies of a prepared file for each student. Each file needs to be given a unique name so that students can save their work as they progress. It may be necessary to assist with the saving process. For Worksheets 1 and 6 (pages 7 and 12), students need to know how to use an arrow tool function and to click and drag to complete the worksheet electronically. Activity 1: Word match Using Worksheet 1 (page 7) as an electronic file, students match the word to the picture by using an arrow tool function to draw a line from one to the other. Students save and print their work. Alternatively, the worksheet can be distributed as a handout and students draw a line from the word to the picture. CSF Sample Units: Information and Communications Technology – Les animaux 3 Activity 2: Drawing pictures Using Worksheet 2 (page 8) as a handout, students draw the appropriate picture for the corresponding word. Activity 3: Missing letters Using Worksheet 3 (page 9) as an electronic file, students type in the missing letter. A picture clue is provided to help students. Students save and print their work. Alternatively, the worksheet can be distributed as a handout and students write the missing letter. Activity 4: Matching game Worksheet 4 (page 10) provides a template which students use (cut up) to make a set of cards. Teachers have additional copies of the templates available for students. The cards have either the animal picture or word. Students can mix up the cards, then match the words to the pictures and paste into a workbook. The cards can also be used to play card games such as pairs, memory or snap. Templates can be adapted to develop ‘bingo’ cards. Activity 5: Copy the word Using Worksheet 5 (page 11) as an electronic file, students copy the word by typing in the letters. This particular task is linked to the ICT focus of the unit and is therefore completed on a computer. Students print their work. As an extension, students can use a prepared Microsoft Word file to type in an animal word by copying it from Worksheet 5 or from the teacher word cards, printing and then drawing a large picture of the animal for display in the classroom. Activity 6: Click and drag Using Worksheet 6 (page 12) as an electronic file, students click on the animal picture and drag the image to the correct word. Alternatively, the worksheet can be distributed as a handout and students cut and paste the pictures. CSF Sample Units: Information and Communications Technology – Les animaux 4 Assessment Student learning can be assessed against CSF learning outcomes and indicators as detailed in the Assessment table below. Suggested strategies for collecting assessment data are also included. What to assess Knowledge • Identify selected animals using French words. • Recognise the written French word for selected animals. Relevant indicators LOTE (French) Listening LOFRL102 • Record anecdotal notes on completed work. • • Print copies of student work to include in an individual assessment portfolio. • Observe students identification and pronunciation of words in different activities. • Observe whether students are able to match words and pictures correctly while playing card games.
