PROJECT DETAILS a. Describe your proposed project. The proposed project is a speaker event with Dr. Vandana Shiva as the spokesperson, occurring Thursday, February 25, 2016, open to all Western students, faculty, staff and community members. Dr. Vandana Shiva is an Indian scholar, environmental activist and anti-globalization author. Shiva, currently based in Delhi, has authored more than 20 books and appeared in a variety of documentaries and films. The event will be day-long, with the large speaker presentation happening in the evening in the WWU Performing Art Center Mainstage (capacity of 1,450, reservation has been confirmed and paid for) where Dr. Shiva will give a presentation on industrial agriculture’s impact on climate change, as well as student activism and environmental engagement. The lecture will focus on how fossil fuel based industrial agriculture is responsible for 40 % greenhouse gas emissions causing climate chaos, and is also vulnerable to climate change. Dr. Shiva will arrive the morning of the 25th and will be putting on a small workshop focusing on women in agriculture, led by Dr. Shiva. This workshop will feature Dr. Shiva’s voice as she empowers local student and community farmers when working in an industry that is constantly being shifted by the government and climate change. This will be hosted by the Social Resource Outreach Center, the Outback Farm, and the AS Environmental Center. This small workshop will be in addition to and will precede the large speaker presentation during the eventing at 6:00 PM. Dr. Shiva will leave Bellingham the morning of the 26th. Her agency, Evil Twin Booking, also recommended she could be available for a small breakfast the morning of the 26th. The large speaker event will be free to students while community members will pay $6 to see Dr. Shiva speak in the PAC, ensuring that this event will focus on student participation first. Dr. Shiva’s speaker fee is $12,500. This event will be co-sponsored by a variety of AS programs, including the AS Environmental and Sustainability Programs but will need larger funds from the Sustainable Action Fund and the AS Large Event Fund. We are requesting $5,000 from the Sustainable Action Fund as it will be an excellent use of funds, and relates directly to the SAF mission statement. Dr. Shiva’s agency is also requesting a flat travel fee of $1,000 which will be covered by the ESP budget. These fees are set by Dr. Vandana Shiva’s booking agency, Evil Twin Booking. The speaker fee of $12,500 is a standard fee set for colleges. The travel fee is the cost of travel and hotel expenses, split between all sponsors along Dr. Shiva’s tour, for a flat travel fee of $1,000. b. What are the goals and desired outcomes of your project? The goal of this project is to educate the student body on industrial agriculture and how it relates to Bellingham on a global scale, sustainability wise. This will be measured quite accurately by the number of people who attend the large-scale speaking event at the Performing Arts Center mainstage. The outcome of this project is to have a more educated, united and globally aware student body. c. Does your project tie into any broader campus sustainability goals or initiatives? If yes, please describe how. As found on the Office of Sustainability Website, “Western Washington University strives to be a national leader in campus sustainability.” This event will aim to inspire and empower students with Dr. Shiva’s PROPOSAL ONLY VALID DURING 2015-2016 ACADEMIC YEAR 2 Page message, expanding their worldview and hopefully having them expand their horizons through the message presented. Dr. Shiva’s message is powerful and will inspire students to see that sustainability is much bigger than themselves, and Bellingham: it is global, and impacts every one of us. This presentation, shown to a large population of the student body, will give students the opportunity to learn more about sustainability locally and globally, and will educate them on the next steps. The event is an innovative, student driven project, headed by the student employees of the Environmental Center. The event will both provide not only a learning opportunity for every Western student with a free, large speaker event, but will promote green practices through the nature of the presentation. The event will empower and enlighten students to reduce their own environmental impact and will enrich students by looking at sustainability on a global scale, creating aware and motivated students. d. How will the success of the project be measured? Describe the quantitative and/or qualitative sustainability metrics you will use to measure the success of your project. This event will be measured by the number of people who attend the large speaking event in the PAC. Since the PAC requires tickets to be purchased for the event, regardless if the tickets are free or not, we will have an accurate count. We will also be conducting a survey that will be posted on the event’s Facebook page after the event to see what the reaction to the event is. Finally, the ESP keeps record of events by requiring pre- and post- event logs through OrgSync which project stakeholders will be asked to fill out before and after the event to see how those involved in the event felt the event went. f.
