Wow! Our league year is half over this month! I hope you are progressing in your
League goals, learning new skills, fine tuning your leadership, making new friends,
and gaining knowledge about the community. If not, please take a moment to chat
with your placement advisor (your committee chair). We want to ensure that you
maximize your year and potential in the League.
December brings the announcement of the new JLL Board of Directors for 20032004. I know Joni joins me in expressing gratitude to the Nominating Committee for
their tireless efforts in slating such an incredible, enthusiastic Board. For the first
time ever, the Nominating Committee interviewed each candidate for an AVP
position. It was no small task, but I am confident their efforts will reap great
rewards. I also want to thank the women who have agreed to serve for donating
their time, talents, and expertise to moving our League forward in the years to
come.
This month we welcome Jean Block as the next keynote speaker for the
Leadership Training Series. Jean’s visit is made possible by a partnership with the
Center for Nonprofit Excellence, which shares in her expenses to appear before
our respective groups. I am excited about the expertise and insight she brings us
and thrilled to find a partner to help underwrite expenses and maximize our dollars.
Even if you are not in leadership, please join us on December 5 to learn about
fundraising Jean Block-style!
As we reflect during this holiday season on the joys of our life and those things for
which we are thankful, please know how grateful I am for each and every one of
you and the sacrifices you make to be a part of this organization. Have no doubt,
the Louisville community is better off because of our efforts, and I hope you are,
too. Enjoy your holiday season and come back in January with renewed dedication
to achieving the League’s and your own personal goals. I look forward to seeing
you then.
Warmly,
Susan Viers Wobbe
President
P.S.—Please remember to drop off your gently used merchandise this month at our

your 2002 taxes!

The Annual Giving Campaign is well under way and we are happy to report that we have received $13,944 in pledges
and donations. Many thanks to all of you who have made your pledges already. Your support and generous contributions
are making the campaign a success. 218 members have participated so far, which represents approximately 30% of the
total membership.
If you have not already mailed in your donation, it’s not too late! We are still gladly accepting pledges. Just fill out the
pledge sheet in CLIPS and send it in today! We would love to see a high percentage of participation and we can’t do it
without everyone’s support. When the League approaches businesses in the community for grant money and corporate
solicitations they want to know what percentage of the membership participates in the Annual Giving Campaign. The
extent to which we support our league can be an important factor in their decision to donate. Please consider giving;
every size donation is greatly appreciated.
We would like to extend a sincere thank you to those members who volunteered for the call shifts: Ellana Bessen, Nikki
Bockhorst, Whitney Campbell, Kris Carlton, Katie Chapman, Donna Dudgeon, Sydney Goetz, Angela Gulley, Corey
Kuhn, Melony Lane, Janet Lurding, Christi McGown, Katie Olson, Colleen Rice, and Carol Whalen. Their help was
greatly appreciated. We would also like to extend a huge thank you to two businesses for their help with the campaign.
CINGULAR WIRELESS generously donated cell phones for our use during the phone-a-thon. A big thank you to JLL
member Edie Walters with Cingular. NEUROSCIENCE ASSOCIATES, PSC generously agreed to let us use their office
suite and phone systems for one of our call evenings. Thanks to the physicians for allowing us to use their facility, all the
staff who cleared their work areas of confidential patient information and a special thank you to office manager, Cheryl
Bibb, for coordinating everything.
We would like to recognize those members whose donations have been received as of November 5th 2002, totaling $8539.

From the President-Elect...
MY EXPERIENCE WITH LEADERSHIP LOUISVILLE
I’ve quickly realized that participating in Leadership Louisville is similar to taking a graduate course. It keeps you quite busy, not only with the
monthly day-long activities, but offers many enhancement opportunities to further explore the assigned topic each month.
During October, our focus was on “Public Education.” Our class was divided into groups and we set out across the county to visit area
schools. My group visited Layne Elementary in Valley Station. I shadowed teachers, the counselor, and the principal. Lunch that day consisted
of a taco, an apple, and a bag of baby carrots! Later that day we heard presentations from the Dr. Stephen Daeschner, Supt. of Jefferson Co.
Public Schools and the new president of Jefferson Community and Technical Colleges.
Some of the facts I learned about JCPS:
-
28th largest school district in the US
96,500 students
54% of the student population is from single-parent families
82% of teachers have a Master’s degree or higher
1,200 students added this year-enrollment is up
I also attended the Northup-Conway Debate sponsored by the Leadership Louisville Foundation and Greater Louisville, Inc. The LLF sponsors a
Breakfast Club. I enjoyed a presentation by Nick Anderson, Cartoonist for the Courier-Journal.
All of these experiences and people I have met will be a great resource for myself and the JLL. I’ll continue to share more experiences after I
visit UPS later this month and learn about “Business and the Economy in Louisville.”
THE FALL AJLI CONFERENCE IN HOLLYWOOD
Susan Viers Wobbe, JLL President and I had the pleasure of representing our league at the AJLI fall meeting for all Presidents and
President-Elects on the weekend of October 17th-19th in Hollywood, California. We stayed at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel that was
adjacent to the Kodak Theatre where the Academy Awards Program takes place each March.
I arrived early and participated in the PALS group. PALS stands for Presidents and Leagues Sharing. Membership is composed of those
leagues that have between 125 and 350 active members. Some of the discussions centered around thrift sales, provisional classes, and
signature community projects.
The next two days consisted of many workshops. One of the highlights of this particular meeting is taking the Birkman Skill Survey,
receiving your results, comparing them with your president, and gaining insight on making the most of our strengths and those of others.
Susan was featured in a panel of six leagues that were spotlighted at the PR Marketing Campaign Breakfast for all the conference
attendees. What a great feeling to see Susan’s op-ed article that appeared in Business First up on the Power point screen for all to admire!
The Closing Dinner featured Meryl Marshall-Daniels, President of Two Oceans Entertainment Group and past Chair and CEO of the
Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Her speech was on “Leaving a Legacy.” Meryl said the mark of a successful leader lives on in
the fabric of an organization. Even more than for the goals set and achieved during your tenure, you will be remembered best for the
people you inspired and the values you cherished and instilled in others. Those words are powerful, no matter what position of leadership
you hold in our league. Who are you inspiring today for our league’s future?

THE CASA COMMITTEE HOSTS CASA VOLUNTEERS
AND KIDS
AT KENTUCKY KINGDOM
Trick-or-Treating! Roller Coaster Rides! Pumpkins!
On Sunday, October 20th, the CASA committee hosted 30 CASA
volunteers and kids at Kentucky Kingdom for a day of fun. The
children came dressed up in costumes and trick-or-treated through
the park while they enjoyed all of the rides and games. Snacks and
beverages were on hand for those needing a break from all of the
activity and each CASA child was given a small pumpkin to take
home with them.
JLL members toured the park with the kids, passed out pumpkins
and snacks, and even had the opportunity to enjoy a few rides
throughout the day. A few JLL members even made it around the
park to snap a few Polaroid photos of the CASAs and their kids so
they would have a souvenir to take home with them! It definitely was
a wonderful day for everyone involved.
The CASA committee would like to thank Troy Thomas of Six Flags
Kentucky Kingdom for the ticket donation, Paul’s Fruit Market for the
pumpkin donation and Mo Moorman Distributors for the Clearly
Canadian donation. Without these items, this event would not have
been possible!
This year the Junior League is planning a winter outing to the
Science Center and a spring outing to the Zoo. “The Junior League
volunteers are great about stepping in to help CASA volunteers who
have more than one child to look after. This was a big help at
Kentucky Kingdom where the kids wanted to see and do
everything!” remarked one CASA volunteer.
The Junior League of Louisville was one of the early supporters of
CASA when we started in Jefferson County in 1985. Having
recently celebrated its 80th year in Louisville, the Junior League is
again reaching out to help CASA fill a need.
The CASA staff, volunteers, and children say “Thank You!” to the
Junior League of Louisville!
The KRUSH (Keeping Relationships Upbeat Safe and Healthy)
Dating Violence Prevention Committee, in conjunction with the
Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, has begun delivering its dating
violence prevention workshop and curriculum to middle schools in
the Greater Louisville Community. KRUSH committee members
presented the program to the Jefferson County Public School
Youth Service Center (YSC) Coordinators in October and received
an enthusiastic response from several area schools.
KRUSH is scheduled to deliver its first workshop this year to
Albert E. Meyzeek Middle School on Monday, November 25, 2002.
The workshop and curriculum follow-up will serve numerous 8th
grade students in one of Meyzeek’s established programs. High
school peer mentors trained last spring will assist with the
program’s delivery.
As part of the educational program, each student will be given an
information pamphlet about dating violence and given the
opportunity to complete the KRUSH workbook. This workbook
highlights many areas of relationship development, maintenance,
and termination. After completing the workbook, the student will
have a better awareness of healthy and unhealthy dating
behaviors, know how to recognize signs of unhealthy
relationships, and learn different communication strategies to
terminate unhealthy relationships.
The neighborhoods targeted by KRUSH for this year’s pilot
program, made possible though generous grants from the Miller
Foundation and Community Foundation of Louisville, have the
highest rates of poverty, single-parent households and domestic
violence incidents, and therefore, the highest risks of school
failure and personal problems for the youths living in the
community. Through the YSCs in these schools, KRUSH has an
opportunity to provide education as a tool to stop the cycle of
abuse and its inherent causes.
In addition to JCPS, KRUSH members are also working with the
Archdiocese of Louisville and the Louisville Teen Dating Violence
Network toward the goal of “creating a comprehensive
coordinated community response to eliminate teen dating
violence.” Finally, KRUSH members are seeking grants and
exploring future collaboration with the Kentucky Shakespeare
Festival to continue the project in the upcoming years.
JLL Members or other interested parties may contact Jennifer
Black Hans (E-mail, jenmblack@aol.com, or daytime number, 2913886) or Kandi Walker (E-mail, kandi.walker@louisville.edu, or
daytime number, 852-8174) about the program.
Maryhurst Committee Update
The Maryhurst Committee kicked off the year with our first meeting
at the Dorsey Lane campus where we were greeted by the President
Judith Lambert, Activities Coordinator Marsha Collins, and Volunteer
Liaison Patricia Harris. After a presentation on the history of Maryhurst
and explanation of this non-profit organization’s goals and commitment to
children of greatest need, the committee began the process of planning
an event for the fall.
The event was set for November 23, 2002 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
and included an Ice Breaker Game for the JLL members and the
Maryhurst girls followed by activities to build self-esteem in these
teenage girls and provide them skills they can use in daily life. We
finished with a Thanksgiving Luncheon catered by Mastersons. The
committee would like to thank Mastersons and all JLL Members who
contributed items for the goodie bags given to the girls at Maryhurst.
JLL’s Yummy Corporate Partner
Due to the generosity of Yum! Brands, the Junior League of
Louisville will not only be saving money on food but will also have
additional money for community projects. Yum! answered JLL’s
corporate solicitation request by donating $1050 in cash to
CASA, $750 worth of food for the February meeting, and $700
worth of food for the Blooming Deals Preview Party. Please show
your appreciation for Yum! by attending the February general
meeting, in which Cheryl Bachelder, KFC’s CEO, will be
speaking and patronizing Yum! restaurants, KFC, Taco Bell,
Pizza Hut, Long John Silver’s, and A&W. Thank you Yum! for
your continued support of the JLL!

Editing/Proofing Guidelines
The VP and/or AVP of your council should review all materials that are being sent to the general
public and/or the media. In addition, the VP and/or AVP of the Communications Council should
approve all materials (invitations, brochures, flyers, etc…) that are to be printed for the general
public. The VP and/or AVP of the Communications Council should also approve all materials
that are being sent to the media (either by mail or email). This will eliminate inappropriate use
of the logo and prevent any mistakes or typos from appearing on JLL materials.

5 Organizations Benefited from the Wonderful Volunteers of JLL who Dedicated their Time to the October Done-in-a-Day!
Volunteers were distributed to Audubon Hospital, Center for Women and Families, Hospital Hospitality House, Shelter House and Wesley
House. There was much accomplished at each site. We definitely made a difference for each of these organizations.
Audubon Hospital gathered JLL members with their senior administrators to brainstorm on improving their volunteer recruitment. The number
of volunteers has declined over the past several years. Participants worked to develop a strategy to recruit new volunteers to assist at
Audubon Hospital. JLL is thrilled to continue to be involved in this project.
Volunteers cleaned out the career closet at the Center for Women and Families. The outdated clothing was donated to Goodwill and the rest
of it was organized to make it easier for the women to find what they need. The closet is available to women in need of clothing for job
interviews, court appearances or any other similar purpose.
Hospitality House is a place for visitors from outside Jefferson County to stay for a minimal fee, based on ability to pay, while their loved ones
are in the hospital. The guests are asked to clean their rooms when they check-out. While the guests do a good job of cleaning, the 19 rooms
were in need of a really good scrubbing. JLL volunteers had over half of the 19 rooms sparkling clean by the time they were finished.
JLL volunteers assisted with the grand opening of the new Shelter House, a YMCA Safe Place Center. They helped with registration,
directing guests, serving refreshments and aided the staff in clean up following the event. The Junior League was instrumental in the
formation of the original Shelter House in 1974.
A special thank you to committee member, Kim Lansdell. Kim arranged interviews during the week with Channel-32 News for coverage of our
Done-in-a-Day project in conjunction with National Make A Difference Day. Congrats and thanks to the provisionals who had their own Donein-a-Day Project at Wesley House. We would also like to thank each and every JLL volunteer who participated in the other four projects. It
was a gratifying experience for everyone. The March Done-in-a-Day is your chance to get involved and make a difference in your
community. We look forward to seeing you in the spring!
The Provisional Fall Done-In-A-Day Committee would like to thank the following sponsors for their generous contribution of gift certificates and
food for our community service project at Wesley House on October 26th. They truly helped to make the event successful and enjoyable for all
those who participated: Kroger at Stoneybrook, Doll’s Market, and ValuMarket.

Breath of Fresh Air Awards
This year at the September, November and February General Meetings the Board will recognize those leaders and
members who go above and beyond in their league duties. It is a breath of fresh air when someone actually takes
the ball and runs with it! That is why we have named these the Breath of Fresh Air Awards. We honored three
women who have gone above and beyond with their efforts to help the Junior League of Louisville at the
November General Meeting. Each of them received a certificate and a box of Junior Mints as a small token of our
appreciation for their efforts.
Heather Dueitt is an exemplary Provisional. Heather has already taken the time to complete three community
service shifts by volunteering at the St. Joe’s picnic, the YMCA Shelter site for Done in a Day and completing not
one but two Race for the Cure shifts. She has already completed her fundraising requirement by working on the
Brightest Star event in September. But she went above and beyond by staying for the entire event. She willingly
did whatever was asked of her and when she got finished with something she would ask for more work. Heather
has also taken the lead on her provisional project. For all of these reasons we recognize Heather with The Breath
of Fresh Air Award.
Carol Shannon and Shelby Gregory did a wonderful job handling our last year of JLL involvement in the Race for
the Cure. Carol was in the last weeks of her pregnancy when RACE day came around and Shelby had to miss the
Race because of emergency surgery the night before. They have really served above and beyond our required
duties or obligations with regard to our participation in the Race. They never once complained. They simply
cheerfully asked for more volunteers. For these reasons we recognize Carol and Shelby with the Breath of Fresh
Air Award.
If you know of someone who deserves recognition, please pass her name onto Meredith Williams, VP of
Membership.
Congratulations to the following active members who have completed both their Fundraising Requirement and their
Community Service Requirement!!

Training Corner...
We heard you! Thanks to everyone who participated in the October speak out meetings and the Board for facilitating these discussions. We had
approximately 116 participants! While not all of the issues and concerns are addressed in this article please know that all the issues will be
looked into. The results from the survey will be posted on the web site and you will be notified through the Weekly Update when it is posted.
Below are some answers to some of your comments.
Placement Brochure and Placement Fair Questions:
The Placement Brochure is located in the Members Only site under Forms/Membership Council. It is there year-round. There was a comment
during the discussion that members would like to indicate preferences. On the Placement form you may indicate your preferences by numbering
your choices.
There was a suggestion to create a Placement waiting list. While it would be great to fill spots that become open, this would put other
committees at a disadvantage by moving people constantly through out the year. Another option might be to do a double placement.
Turning in a placement preference sheet can help you get the placement that you want. Several members indicated that they were randomly
placed. Only members who do not turn in a preference sheet are randomly placed.
We heard you about your need for more information on the Placement Brochure. The Placement Committee is currently looking into this. If you
are a committee chair you can begin now to think of ways to make your committee descriptions helpful for perspective committee members in the
upcoming Placement year.
The Placement Fair is April 22nd. Put it on your calendar and plan to be there and make this the big event it should be!
Consequences:
Your committee chair is your Placement Advisor. Your committee chair is also your mentor, call them if you have any questions. It is a two way
street in this process. If you haven’t heard from your committee chair in awhile, call them! If you can’t get in touch with them call the Placement
Committee.
The Placement Chairs (Faith Atwell & Kathryn Roberts) actively try to contact members who are not responding to communication from committee
chairs. If you get a phone call or letter from them, please let them know what is going on. If you have questions or concerns about your
placement, please contact Faith or Kathryn.
If you have questions about credits you can always contact the Corresponding/Recording Secretary (Becky Ragland).
There is a Leave of Absence policy. It can be found in the bylaws on the Members Only site under Forms/Membership Council Bylaws. If you
feel you need a leave of absence, please contact the Corresponding/Recording Secretary (Becky Ragland).
The Membership Council is currently proposing revisions to the bylaws for a more structured consequence system. If you have any
suggestions or concerns please contact Lezlie Renee’ Pipes, Becky Ragland, or Meredith Williams.
Childcare:
We have a Childcare Ad Hoc committee that is chaired by Katie Schulz. Give her a call if you would like to lend your expertise to the committee.
We have opportunities this year to attend General Meetings during the day in October, January, and March.
Other issues:
In order to assist you in meeting other members at General Meetings this year, we have enacted a new name tag system that helps identify other
members. Nametags are outlined in various colors: red indicates transfer, black indicates provisional, blue indicates that they are a guest. We
also have board members that are greeting at the large general meetings. Provisional Advisors and Transfer Committee members are also
responsible for introducing people. We also have some icebreakers planned at the large General Meetings. So come to the meetings at 6:30
introduce yourself. You just may find a new friend. In addition we have 3 months (Oct., Jan. & March) this year where we meet in small groups.
There are also monthly Membership Trainings that are small in scale. DIAD projects and Fundraising Shifts are a good small group setting as
well. You even get credit while making new friends.
Carol Whalen spoke on managing committee meetings at the Leadership Training in June. Please feel free to contact her if you would like a
refresher! You can also refer to the Training Corner in the October issue for some suggestions. Contact your Council VP if you feel that your
Committee Chair needs some gentle hints.
Several comments were made that some committees meet too often. Please discuss this with your Chairman if you feel that you could condense
your meetings. Also keep in mind that Council Meetings are required in the Bylaws to occur quarterly and that your attendance at those meetings
makes the Council more productive. So please make it a point to attend called meetings. Keep in mind that attendance at Committee and Council
meetings ARE part of your placement.
The sign out policy at General Meetings has been put in place to encourage members to stay for the entire meeting. Leaving early causes
disruptions and takes away from the General Meeting. In the past few years we have made an effort to keep meetings limited to 1 hour because
we understand the value of your time. If however you need to leave, please make arrangements with the Corresponding/Recording Secretary
(Becky Ragland).
