IIA Ireland event Thursday 3rd March 2016 The internal Control System – its use in managing internal and external risk The auditing of financial statements, if it is to result in credible information, must include an examination of the internal control system. The ICS is a governance mechanism that delivers governance transparency, a function that allows both the manager of the firm and the firm’s stakeholders to “look” inward. The presentation will demonstrate how internal control is not confined to managing internal risk only but can be adjusted to “look” outward to anticipate external risk. Achieving this underpins the role of the internal auditor as a contributor to strategic management of risk. Key aspects to be discussed: Control is binary in function Governance mechanisms deliver corporate transparency The COSO Framework captures nuts and bolts of controls while demonstrating the “tone at the top”.
