Season’s Diary
We’re pleased to welcome back Opera della Luna, Gonzo Moose and
Pam Ayres (not on the same night!) and to be hosting the opening of
Hexham based Théâtre Sans Frontières with their new show, Canary
Gold. Comedy and jazz club evenings in the cafe are set for another
great season and the film club goes from strength to strength, with
the addition of a Sunday matinee double bill in February. In the
galleries there’s a nationally touring exhibition of the work of pop art
pioneer Eduardo Paolozzi and a retrospective of Edwin Straker’s work.
In February we will be premiering a new body of work from Allendale
artist Joss Wrigg; A Parliament of Hares – not to be missed!
Our commitment to young people continues with a rich programme
of events. Horse + Bamboo’s The Nightingale, Peoples Theatre’s
The Elephant Bridesmaid and Tall Stories’ My Brother the Robot will
entertain younger children. For teenagers (and adults) there’s exciting
new productions from Icarus Theatre (Romeo and Juliet) and the
stunning 2faced Dance. There’s also dance for young children with the
visit of Northern Ballet in March presenting daytime performances of
Ugly Duckling. And there’s plenty of ways to take part too – with
regular workshops in singing, drama, dance, folk music and writing.
We look forward to providing a warm welcome to you in your
arts centre.

in What The Dickens?
The Misadventures of
Charles Dickens
Tuesday 26 February
7.30pm
Young Charles Dickens is a rookie
reporter on The Morning Chronicle.
Whilst investigating the foggy slums
of Ye Olde London Towne, he
accidently stumbles on a story that
could make his reputation. Follow our
hero on the adventure of a lifetime!
Expect a world of pockmarked
pickpockets, cobwebby convicts,
teeming slums and empty marshes,
dark secrets and convoluted plots,
and lots and lots of fog…
This inventive and gripping comedy
features just three actors playing over
20 roles in 80 minutes of fast-paced
fun and thrilling action. Brimming
with unfeasibly quick costume
changes, stupidly surreal characters
and wonderfully daft jokes, What The
Dickens? is the most absurd

Pam Ayres brings her latest show
to Hexham following the recent
publication of her autobiography,
The Necessary Aptitude.
'Marvellous choreography,
fierce, bitter and brutal, that
takes the potential for total
theatre seriously. Plenty of
companies claim to experiment.
Plenty of companies make high
claims for their work. 2Faced

Pam Ayres’ work is funny, and
approachable. It sounds simple,
as though dashed off, but this is
deceptive. Her hair-trigger timing,
her eye for the detail of everyday life,
and for the absurdity therein, makes
for an art that hides art.
Pam Ayres has sold millions of books,
albums, CDs, and DVDs over the
years, and she is still a regular on TV
and Radio, on programmes such as
Just A Minute, Ayres On The Air, QI,
Countdown and The One Show.

Wednesday 27 March
7.30pm
Paul Robeson is a great and famous
actor, singer and civil rights campaigner.
When he gets too radical and outspoken
for the establishment's liking, he is
branded a traitor to his country, is
harassed, and denied opportunities
to perform or travel.
This award-winning rollercoaster
journey through Robeson’s remarkable
life highlights how his activism caused
him to be disowned and disremembered,
even by leaders and descendants of
the American civil rights movement.
It features some famous songs and
speeches, including a dramatic rendition
of Ol’ Man River, and a spectacularly
defiant testimony to the Senate House
Un-American Activities Committee.

Joss Wrigg is a visual artist, based in
Allendale. Her animal sculptures are made
with locally sourced fleece using the dry
felting technique of needle felt. Her work
is driven by the process of exploring her
chosen medium but is often inspired by
our changing relationship to the natural
world. In this new body of work, Joss has
taken both the form and the myth of the
hare as her inspiration.

GALLERY ONE & TWO
A new Hayward Touring exhibition of screen-prints by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924–2005),
one of the pioneers of the pop art movement in the UK. Born in Scotland, Paolozzi was a
compulsive collector and a jumbler of icons.
He is equally revered for his
mechanistic sculptures and
his kaleidoscopic print
projects. The artist, who
described himself as 'a
wizard in Toytown',
transformed the mundane,
the derelict and the mass
produced into images that
zap with eclecticism and
impress with their graphic
complexity.
