Comedy and jazz club evenings in the cafe are set for another great season and the film club goes from strength to strength, with the addition of a Sunday matinee double bill in February. In the galleries there’s a nationally touring exhibition of the work of pop art pioneer Eduardo Paolozzi and a retrospective of Edwin Straker’s work. In February we will be premiering a new body of work from Allendale artist Joss Wrigg; A Parliament of Hares – not to be missed! Our commitment to young people continues with a rich programme of events. Horse + Bamboo’s The Nightingale, Peoples Theatre’s The Elephant Bridesmaid and Tall Stories’ My Brother the Robot will entertain younger children. For teenagers (and adults) there’s exciting new productions from Icarus Theatre (Romeo and Juliet) and the stunning 2faced Dance. There’s also dance for young children with the visit of Northern Ballet in March presenting daytime performances of Ugly Duckling. And there’s plenty of ways to take part too – with regular workshops in singing, drama, dance, folk music and writing. We look forward to providing a warm welcome to you in your arts centre. Her animal sculptures are made with locally sourced fleece using the dry felting technique of needle felt. Her work is driven by the process of exploring her chosen medium but is often inspired by our changing relationship to the natural world. In this new body of work, Joss has taken both the form and the myth of the hare as her inspiration. Eduardo Paolozzi - General Dynamic F.U.N. Saturday 12 January – Saturday 9 February GALLERY ONE & TWO A new Hayward Touring exhibition of screen-prints by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924–2005), one of the pioneers of the pop art movement in the UK. Born in Scotland, Paolozzi was a compulsive collector and a jumbler of icons. He is equally revered for his mechanistic sculptures and his kaleidoscopic print projects. After WW2 service he taught at Camberwell with Passmore and Johnstone, then initiated and taught the first BA in Commercial Art at Newcastle University. Establishing his own studio in Newcastle, he worked in commercial, industrial and fashion illustration and interior design before returning to his first loves of oil and watercolour.
