Learning Objective(s): After completion of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Understand the need for “middle-skill” workers in South Carolina.
2. Understand the difference between two-year college programs and four-year college
programs.
3. Name a two-year college in South Carolina and a program of study or career you could obtain
after successfully attending one.
Materials: Classroom with Projector, Pre-test, Post-test, Jobs of the Future PowerPoint,
Midlands Technical College Program and Career Guide, “Hot Jobs of the Future” MEBA
Pamphlet, White/Blackboard, chalk/dry-erase markers, ELMO
Procedure:
1) Administer Pre-test.
2) Activity: Write three categories on board “Low Skill,” “Middle Skill,” and “High Skill” and
then ask students to write the career they have in mind under one of the three categories. After
students are finished, explain that those terms have to do with the level of education needed to
obtain a job and ask them if they now wish to move their career to another category. Next go
through each category and point out which careers are in the correct column and which ones are
not.
3) Review PowerPoint with students and play the two games included – matching career with
“school of study” and unscramble the key words.
4). Play “Guess the Salary” game by showing students (via the ELMO) The Midlands Technical
College Program and Career Guide occupations and ask them to guess the job’s salary after
reading them a description of the career (salary scales are provided in Midlands Tech Career
Guide).
5). Show the students MEBA’s Hot Jobs of the Future Pamphlet and discuss their future ideas
and how they have changed.
6).Administer Post-test and answer any questions students might have.
_______________________________________________________________________
Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected?
A Pre-test was given before the session. Students responded Yes or No to four questions and
provided a closed-end response to question number five. The same five questions were given on
the Post-test.
Process Data:
-Held 10 large classroom guidance lessons for 196 eighth grade students.
-Pre and post data collected for “Middle Skill Jobs” knowledge.
-Students used engaging activity and games (in PowerPoint) for a learning opportunity.
-Students and parents are able to access Midlands Technical College information from home to
look at two-year programs and careers with salary information. Students have iPads for use at
home.
Perception Data:
Middle Skills Pre/Post Test
(Circle Yes or No)
1). I have an idea about the type of job I want to do after high school graduation. Yes No
2). I know about the certificate/degree programs offered at Midlands Technical
College.
YES NO
3). I know about the careers/occupations you can obtain by attending Midlands Technical
College or any two-year program. YES NO
4). I know the difference between a two-year degree/certificate and a
four-year degree.
YES NO
5). Name one career or occupation someone would be qualified for after attending a two-year
program at Midlands Technical College.
Perception Data:
Perception Data: Yes Responses to Pre Test and Post Test Questions 1-4
The table above is used to reference the perception results of the Pre-test and Post-test in
percentages based on a “Yes” response to the questions. The Post-test results indicated 87%
could identify careers they were interested in. The most growth occurred in question two and
three regarding awareness of programs available at a two-year college with over a 48% increase
from the Pre-test. 93% understood the difference between a two-year and four-year degree,
which was a 30% increase from the Pre-test results.
Outcome Data:
Outcome Data: Pre & Post Test Question 5 Correct Responses
Question five was used for outcome data. Post-test results indicated 74% could name one career
they qualify for after attending a two-year college, an increase of 49% from the Pre-test results.
Follow Up:
For the future, our department will continue with the goal of raising students’ awareness of
middle skill jobs. Forty percent of students in the White Knoll High School graduating class of
2013 will be attending two-year colleges. It will be interesting to see if that percentage increases
as we continue this goal of raising awareness of middle-skill jobs.
