Illustration Competition – Guidelines

OBJECTIVES:
Give the students’ the opportunity to showcase their fashion illustration talents and the opportunity to have those
illustrations published on FGI promotional materials.
CRITICAL NOTE:
Before beginning to work on this project, it is vital that you read all materials first. If you cannot download the
proper forms, have your faculty advisor contact the Fashion Group International of Dallas immediately (fgidallasstaff@sbcglobal.net or 214-634-0204)
SUMMARY OF COMPETITION:
GENERAL:
 No entry fee will be assessed.
 The winning entry becomes the property of FGI of Dallas for publicity and promotion.
 These illustrations will be used in FGI promotional materials and should accurately portray the
purpose and vision of Fashion Group International of Dallas.
 Illustrations will be on display during Career Day, April 13, 2012.
 Students must be pre-registered for Career Day through their sponsoring college or university by the close
of regular Career Day registration as stated under the general registration guidelines.
 Each student may submit only ONE set of illustrations.
 Each school is limited to SIX entries ONLY. (Therefore schools that have more students interested in this
competition must pre-select the twelve boards that will be sent to Career Day for competition.)
DELIVERABLES: MAJOR CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE-READ CAREFULLY!!!!!!!
 All entries must include 5 (five) individual fashion illustrations suitable for use on promotional materials for
FGI events. Illustrations may be color or black and white and MUST BE hand illustrated.
 EACH OF THE 5 INDIVIDUAL ILLUSTRATIONS MUST BE VIABLE FOR USE IN PROMOTIONAL
MATERIAL ON ITS OWN (bodies of illustrated figures should not overlap each other), BUT SHOULD BE
COMBINED WITH THE OTHER 4 ILLUSTRATIONS ON ONE BOARD FOR THE FINAL PRESENTATION.
 Hard copies of the entries MUST be mounted on Foam Core Board or Bainbridge Board and approximate
20" X 30" in size. (Variations on size will be allowed within a 4-6" difference.)
 ALL 5 ILLUSTRATIONS MUST BE MOUNTED ON A SINGLE BOARD!!!
 Digital images must accompany all entries on a CD, with illustrations submitted in jpg format using a
suggested image file size of 100KB or less and a maximum of 800 pixels wide. Each INDIVIDUAL
illustration must be saved on this CD as individual files.
 Images must be hand illustrated. Illustrations, done by hand, MUST be scanned in jpeg format and saved
to the accompanying CD.
 Fill out the 2-page Student Information Sheet, and Entry and Documentation sheets COMPLETELY, print
neatly or type using HTML form on website. Add all required signatures where indicated.
 Prepare and present your forms in the manner requested on each form. DOCUMENTS MUST be
submitted properly or automatic disqualification will occur. Forms should be placed inside an 8.5" X 11"
clear plastic sheet protector attached to the back of the board as described on the entry form.
 Place the CD containing digital images inside the page protector.
 Tape top of sheet protectors closed so documents do not slip out during shipping.
 If you win an award, your name will be read as it appears on the sheet mentioned above. Register for both
Career Day and the competition under the exact same name. Otherwise, you risk being disqualified
because your competition entry name will not appear on the master Career Day registration list.
ELIGIBILITY:
The following requirements must be met to be eligible to enter this Competition:
 You must be pre-registered for Career Day through your sponsoring college or university by the close of
registration, March 22, 2012. Your registration must be on file with us prior to the judging of the
competition. No late registrants are eligible to compete.
 You must attend Career Day and be present all day to win.









You must be a college sponsored participant and be enrolled in a two-year or four-year institution program
of a Fashion Design, Merchandising, or Interior Design.
Students from a 2-year school may enter for 3 consecutive years only. (This gives part-time students time
to finish the curriculum).
Students from a 4-year school may enter for 5 consecutive years only. (This includes transfer students from
2-year schools. i.e.-If they have entered twice before transferring, they may enter only three more years).
All work, including research and documentation must be done by the entrant and must have been done
within the framework of your college curriculum meeting all requirements and deadlines as outlined by your
instructor and FGI.
Your signature as well as the signature of your instructor on the entry form must verify the above. The
instructor has the authority to refuse any entry at his/her discretion.
No student enrolled in graduate school may compete for prizes as an undergraduate even if attending
undergraduate classes.
No student who has been employed as a professional in their field is eligible to compete for prizes.
Any student winning any award must provide a Social Security Number at the time of award
presentation. All foreign students studying in the US who do not have a temporary Social Security Number
must present a Tax Identification Number at the time of award presentation. A Passport Number is NOT
acceptable for tax reporting purposes.
Your signature on the entry form entitles FGI of Dallas to use your illustrations in their promotional
materials without obligation to you.
DEADLINES
 All entries must be received on or before March 30, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. Entries may be submitted
beginning Monday, March 5, 2012 via parcel post, UPS, Federal Express or Airborne. Boards must arrive
no later than 4:00 pm, Friday, March 30, 2012. Boards may be hand delivered to Fashion Group
International on Thursday and Friday, March 29th and 30th, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
SHIPPING & DELIVERY
 All entries must be delivered via certified mail, UPS, Federal Express, or hand delivered to The Fashion
Group International of Dallas office.
 No entries will be accepted after the deadline of Friday, March 30, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. by any method,
be it hand delivery and/or by Certified Mail, UPS, or Federal Express.
 Ship in regular shipping boxes. INSURE ALL PACKAGES. NOTE: The Fashion Group International of
Dallas, The Fashion Group Foundation of Dallas, Inc., and The Dallas Market Center are released from any
and all liability for loss or damage to your entry.
 If you are hand delivering your entries, make sure to use all technology available to you to ensure
you know the location of the World Trade Center and the Trade Mart, you have accurate driving
directions and/or a map, and you have allowed enough travel time to include traffic congestion. All
deadlines are final. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS!

JUDGING CRITERIA
This competition is intended to showcase the students’ superior illustration abilities. The winning illustrations may
serve as a backdrop on FGI promotional materials and, therefore, must adequately portray the FGI brand image.
All illustrations will be judged on originality, artistic visual appeal, professional representation, the principles and
elements of design, and innovative use of line and color.
The decision of the judges is final.
