Songs that Stick to the Soul – Music Ideas for T&T
Tips for creating a successful music session:
1. Evaluate your presentation. Does it give the kids’ the impression that they are
in a worship service or just a school classroom setting? Council time should be
structured like a worship service with an environment of respectfulness,
expectancy of meeting with God, and desire to respond to God.
Use several media forms to keep it fresh. You may use power point lyrics,
recorded background or videos one week then change it up and sing acapella the
next week for a more camp meeting feel.
2. What type of preparation goes into your service? Is it well planned? Is it
prepared in advance, not last minute? Good. But if you have not heard from God
for the ultimate direction and goal of the service, there will be no sense of
urgency in your message. Make sure you pray about your planning as well as the
clubbers and He will guide you accordingly.
3. It should be obvious to the children that your overwhelming focus is Jesus. Try
to use songs that reflect God's character, Biblical truths or Bible stories; in other
words, good content. IE: Deep & Wide may be fun, but what is it teaching the
kids? What is a fountain and where is it flowing? Remember kids think literally, so
try to keep it simple.
4. If your kids are going to have a good sense of worship, there also needs to be a
balance with your worship music. It should be contemporary, something the kids
will like, but not necessarily radical. You should try to choose fun songs but move
toward worshipful songs to 'set the tone' for council time.
5. Participation is an important part of keeping kids’ interest and helping them
learn. The more they participate, the more they pay attention, the more they feel
a part of what is going on, and the more they internalize what you are teaching
them. Actions help the kids, especially the younger ones, to cement the words
they are singing.
Children love to be creative when they praise the Lord. They will clap their
hands, wiggle their fingers, wave their hands in the air… but simple praise tools
can enable them to explore new ways to praise and worship the Lord.
Gather a large box full of praise tools, such as pom poms, flags, twirling ribbons,
tambourines, etc. It’s a great way to get children involved in the music even if
they don't like to sing.
How do I pick the music
Children's worship music should be
 Easy to sing
 Familiar tunes
 Has an uplifting positive beat
 Has opportunities for movement
Some Camp songs are great to fill in small time spaces or to get the kids motivated
and can easily be sung without accompaniment. Some even work as medleys with
no real prep time like “This is the day” to “Rejoice in the Lord Always” to “I will Enter
His Gates”, etc. Give them a rhythm to add like “Bind Us Together” or jazz up an old
stand by like “Jesus Loves Me”. Have the kids teach you some songs they learned at
camp last summer. Mostly . . . Have fun!
Other things to know:
1. Know your audience. Although some songs are universally fun, the same
songs that work for Cubbies will not always work for Sparks and T&T. The
younger kids can't remember a lot of words, so use repetitive choruses with a
few actions. Sparks are just starting to read, so showing lyrics helps, but T&T
kids are old enough for several verses. Actions help, but I find using sign
language adds extra meaning and even the older kids respond to it better. T&T
clubbers also enjoy helping lead or pick the songs makes them feel like it is there
worship time. T&T is a great time to integrate worship songs from church or the
radio. T&T clubbers also enjoy singing along with a YouTube video!
2. Know your time limit. Be respectful of the rest of the leaders that will be
presenting during council time. Running through your songs before hand helps to
determine how long you will take and if you need to modify your plan.
3. Know the lesson. If you are needing a little direction on what songs to pick, find
out who will be presenting the lesson and pick songs that reinforce the theme.
4. Know your resources. Make sure you don't just fall back on the same old
Sunday School songs, use other resources. Was there a new worship song you
have learned in church? Maybe the worship leader would be willing to come
teach the kids. What about your VBS? Was there some good songs there the
kids really enjoyed?
5. Know your talents. Some may say "I can't sing", or "I can't play anything", or
"I don't know any songs". Remember, God will provide you with the resources
you need: someone who can play a guitar or piano, accompaniment tapes or
.mp3 files, even YouTube! Be creative!
6. Know things may change. Always be flexible! Make sure you have a few
extra songs in your arsenal in case the rest of Council time runs short. Be
prepared to cut a song if you need to. Don't take it personal! :)
