KEEP IT SIMPLE! 21 Pictures need to be printed at 180dpi – regardless of image memory size and I think you should work to supplying two to three stories (incl. one pic) and four NIBs per page Ok So weekly e:mails are probably in the offing. We have to keep it simple and easy to do though. I suggest - that next week for one newsletter each you pick 5 main stories (150+ words) and 8-10 NIBs and format it as you think a weekly newsletter might look. Send it to me by Monday 14th Jan! I'm so cheeky - but keep it very simple ie using material you have gathered that week or received from contributors. Try to get a balance but don't worry about using everything. Make sure all major stories are covered, even if they have to be rewritten for a story that would come later in the month. I will send you good articles from contributors which I want to use and you can maintain the master file and gradually build up over the month. You need to maintain one clean file so you can see where you are so don't paste stories into it until they are clean/written. I think this might help you to organise your stuff...and it will be better for me because I can focus on sourcing the features. Also by writing more material during the month you will have time to read them through again a few days later and get them word perfect....! I will proof and check everything intermittently. Why don't you start doing this now for the November issue and I can take a look at what you've done in a week or two and help out where necessary. You need to get the art of writing a NIB from a press release in 5-10 minutes. We can sit down and do some together if that will help. If you can get the news together fully each month it is worth more money. I keep hinting at this but the only real way to get more money is reduce the amount of work I do and taking some of my work away.. which I am very keen for you to do because I think I can then spend my efforts bringing more work in for the three of us! There should be absolutely no manual line breaks in any text you give me or I give her as they cause all sorts of problems. Keep formatting simple - bolds and italics only, no ALL CAPS. If you can get to grips with this I can put your fee up to £750 but I would like the news to go up to page17 page, rather than 15, that's roughly one page per section, and two or three pages for powertrain/transmissions, and the odd very long story/interview. Companies are singular i.e. Continental is not are...its not their Write title after you have written story. Stories should contain all the information - title might get deleted - so for example in story below if I delete the title I don't know what the first application of Continental's ISAD is. we don't talk about the "car industry", we belong to the "automotive industry" we don't talk in the first person - no I or we - e.g. we have all heard about daytime running lights.. not good style. Get to the point! NIBS! - Note NIBs are a completely different style to news stories. No title, just a bolded intro. This means intro sentence has to say what the story is about so Also note whenever we mention another publication it is italicised. Siemens HUD story - I'm struggling to edit it - you have done a technical story when really I think it's a business story. Who were the other companies showing HUDs? then I thought perhaps I'd do it as a photo story but we can't illustrate colour...! Have left it out - perhaps we can do something on it for next month NIBS! - Note NIBs are a completely different style to news stories. No title, just a bolded intro. This means intro sentence has to say what the story is about so According to AutoAsia, Denso has developed a car-mounted device that can send information about the car to public traffic management computers by radio. etc becomes Denso has developed a car-mounted device that can information about the car to public traffic management computers by radio, according to AutoAsia. Etc Never give press websites - only general website addresses. Mercedes-Benz not Mercedes Photos need captions... percent not per cent US not U.S. Ian Wagstaff will contribute 3x250 word stories and 4 NIBs a month specifically for the Aftermarket page (which until now has been cut out – we will make sure that it happens in future because necessary). B2B & Telematics – very important to cover for what it means to the future - OE and aftermarket – people need to understanding it now rather than later – try to get on a Covisint trip or ask if I could see one of their clients participating in an online auction…. Sue to try to get sites to re-direct news items to me automatically where possible Most of the above sites update only late in the day (US and Japan focus) so not worth checking first thing in the morning unless you don’t mind reading yesterday’s news... Bit short on European news – where to go for that? Supplier sites? SMMT? OICA, CLEPA etc? You’d better find some new sites! Browsing time could be cut down if could get the above sites to e-mail headlines. So far not enough time to develop articles or do any research other than headlines. WHAT ABOUT ALL THOSE COMPANIES THAT WANT TO SEE COPIES OF THE ARTICLES? TIME SPENT Mon 9th July Tues Weds Thurs 1hr 15 (not subscribed to sites) Fri 1hr 15 so far WHAT IS WANTED Twelve sections – one per page. Each section to have 4 NIBs and 3 x 200 word articles. Spend one hr a day reading above sites and compiling complete list of component first line news for TOTAL file – for Sue’s records and if she wants to fill gaps or develop news items (bone up on telematics and covisint!) – my own pieces I put in another file – DEFINITES – which will have complete text for both NIBs and short pieces – all arranged according to sections in template. Go by feel – weekly updates and regular feedback. Total word count for the first 14 pages is 11,200! Not all my responsibility though (yet!) TO BEGIN WITH First month – to be paid word rate - article on Pechiney aluminium; 413 words submitted 100701 Article on Delphi Motorola; 451 words submitted 110701 Also to come – Valeo article – deadline sooner rather than later but by end July good £100 with pics and quotes plus re-written Added to invoice 016AW To come: ISAD article – also to be invoiced – and delivered for end of July Also; truck new gearbox article – end of August News editor role to be paid by direct payment from Sue Brown – invoice each month after the newsletter has been done. Keep a track of the hours put in – report back – otherwise I’ll be underpaid if I do more. OTHER EXPENSES (SHOWS ETC) Hard copies of receipts should be sent directly to Jonathan Price by post with my invoice. These should be copied (without receipts) to Sue – by e-mail is OK. Sue will OK these as Jonathan asks her about them. Sue Brown conversation 4th September 2001 (me back from Sweden 3rd Sept pm) Sue will continue to work on first part that I sent her last week (ACA Oct edited news 15801-30801). I will build a new file from end 30801. Build NIBS prior to Frankfurt show and then fill in the bulk with Frankfurt stuff. NB this needs to be done very quickly after the show for press. Sue definitely wants Borg Warner (who timing chains for?) and VIsteon new filters stuff. And take up of Orbital technology – at last – follow Sue’s August article for guidance. I am not yet registered with ACA for subscription – she will arrange this. My invoice for July news edits (£500) – she received this 26th August and is now processing. Valeo lighting article – to be written up as a back-up – then updated at the Frankfurt motor show by interview – ARRANGE! Mark Wilkinson is attending Frankfurt for ACA and he wants to try to get around to all the major Tier 1s... This is obviously a big task so if anyone wants to volunteer to take a couple of companies of his hands that would be great. Please would you let me know if you have any plans to spend time with any of the Tier 1s in particular and if you would be able to do anything for ACA from that. Alternatively - if you do get a surprise good interview would you try to call Mark at the show so he doesn't duplicate and focuses his efforts elsewhere - His mobile number is +44 7858 311456. There are also to be a couple of seminars on automatic cars, telematic stuff that I'm interested in. An easy thing to cover would be the technologies that are up for and will win prizes. These include Citroen's communicating car, Delphi's solid oxide fuel cell battery, a common rail gasoline direction injection system from Robert Bosch, Continental Teves' integrated concept for stopping cars in less distance, LuK's robotized manual transmission, an intelligent lighting system from Hella, and from Valeo, a new kind of clutch disc and an electronically controlled engine cooling system. Cheers Bill Subj: Re: Equip Auto Date: 05/10/2001 13:41:53 GMT Daylight Time From: Sue.J.Brown@btinternet.com (Susan Brown) To: BDiem@compuserve.com (Bill Diem) CC: MrkW9@aol.com (Mark Wilkinson) Hi Bill Please would you cover the Renault supplier forum - what is Renault looking for from its suppliers? (Around 500 words?) Ian Wagstaff will be covering the French suppliers from a business perspective, so you could focus on the new technology stories - in particular Valeo's new technology, Citroen's communicating car and other telematics stories. Also we are interested in Bosch's GDI system. While this is a technology story I am interested in the business implications of this, which VMs are interested in it and the future petrol/diesel split. We have covered Hella, Continental and Delphi in some detail but are interested in a quick update of LUK's automated manual gearbox - just a quickie. For the others most of our stories are around 300 words but if you feel a subject needs more let me know Sue Thank you for your Submission. Ethanol and biodiesel are superior, clean-burning, nontoxic motor fuels you can make yourself. Journey to Forever is an overland expedition from Hong Kong to Cape Town. We've left Hong Kong now and are currently in Japan, completing preparations for the journey. We'll be working on rural development and alternative technology projects all along the route. Hence our interest in biodiesel and ethanol -- clean fuels for our vehicles, and a means of improving energy self-reliance in rural communities. These are grow-your-own fuels that can be made on-site in small villages from renewable, locally available resources, for the most part using simple equipment that a village blacksmith can make and maintain. There are ethanol and biodiesel resources, FAQs, how-to's, full recipes and an online Biofuels Library at our website (http://journeytoforever.org/biofuel.html). Your user name is: Mark Wilkinson www.autoliv.com username haoren To all friends of CVTs, I've been reaing this interesting discussion about CVT. I was happy to see that there are more people that share my opinion: CVT is the ideal transmission concept. I still dream about I CVT that would not transmit power thru friction (tangential forces) but thru normal forces (such as two engaged gears). But unfortunately the existing CVT-inventions are designed with less efficient principles, such as friction-drives, hidrostatic, electric, ratcheting, giroscopic-inertia. Unlike two engaged gears, the mentioned systems are energy- wasting, either due to slippingheat, energy conversions, vibration, inertia, complexity & periferics. I've also been searching for such a CVT. While some say a fully-geared-CVT is impossible other claim having found the the mechanical engineering's «holy grail». Until now, i didn't find the «holy grail». Any way, I found some links and I posted them on a new CVT Group at Yahoo: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cvtcontinuouslyvariabletransm It is strictly about CVTs. Subj: Date: From: To: Re: ACA feature ideas 03/07/2002 07:21:49 GMT Daylight Time andrewmollet@yahoo.com MrkW9@aol.com Sent from the Internet (Details) Mark I was thinking of something roughly along the same lines, but much more detailed than what was run in March ACA, which only looks at China and also covers non-Japanese parts manufacturers. What I had in mind was looking at only Japanese component manufacturers and where they are are expanding (obviously China, but also US and Europe). I also want to take a look at the link between (Japanese) component manufacturers and (Japanese) car producers - are component manufacturers simply going abroad to be close to their (Japanese) customers, or do they also hope to use these new overseas plants as platforms to find new non-Japanese customers? Of course, I'm happy to bring in any other ideas you might have! MrkW9@aol.com wrote: Andrew, Thank you for your feature suggestion about Japanese and other Asian companies' new business strategies. That sounds interesting - but just to check with you - we did a big story on Japanese companies moving to China in the March issue - see enclosed PDF file. There was a warning on the site that AOL would prevent my temp log-in password being e-mailed to me because their address looks like a spam source. Hmm – see what happens. The way I do it is to 1. Turn camera onto "M" then to macro. 2. Connect usb cable, wait till pc recognises camera. 3. Turn camera off and remove usb cable at the same time or fractionally after you turn the camera off. 4. When you turn the camera back on you have access to macro mode in wide angle 2.8 and focus down to 5mm. Have a look at these two photos both hand held. The first one is no flash, room lighting, of the top of my pen. The second is a shot of the macro filter that I used to use for macro shooting, don't need it now. Now if Minolta could issue a firmware update so I could access this ability in the field. Hi Ambrose, MY BIG BOO BOO...... Sorry Ambrose and everyone else No. 3 is wrong here are the proper instructions.... 1. Turn camera onto "M" then to macro. 2. Connect usb cable, wait till pc recognises camera. 3. Turn the camera off, wait until it shuts down. Then turn the camera back on again and as soon as the usb letters appear in the top LCD screen remove the cable. 4. The camera will then be in super macro mode in wide angle 2.8 and focus down to 5mm. To answer your question about the Auto settings. What I do is move my dial to "M" and under basic I leave everything to default accept I set "quality" to fine and also under Custom 1 I set the "metering mode" to Spot, but that is just to get a good exposure when up close. I hope this works for you Ambrose. Sorry again for the wrong instructions I was so excited about taking photos I got things wrong. My native language is not english, but i wish you all could understand. There's another way to achieve this function for f100, f200 and f300. But it only works when the battery power show half capacity on the LCD. 1. turn to marco mode 2. set flash mode to "force flash" 3. important: keep pushing or pressing the zoom switch to wide angle, hold on, don't let it go 4. release the shutter Because the battary power is not full, the camera will turn off the LCD for power saving when charging flash light. And when it's charging the flash, you will find the lens zoom to the wide angle! Now, you can cancel the force flash, use the hidden super macro mode. enjoy it :> There's another new way of getting into super macro mode which doesn't require USB or flash. You can use this method anytime even when the battery power is full. I learned this method from a Taiwanese digi-cam website. 1. Turn the dial to M 2. Enable Macro mode 3. Turn the dial to plack-back mode 4. half-press the shutter and hold the zoom lever to W position at the same time and hold it 5. Turn the dial to movie recording mode(the LCD should be black), wait for the camera to focus(the focus indicating light will be on), after it's focused, hold it for at least half a second 6. Turn the dial back to M again, then release the shutter and the zoom lever at the same time. 7. Now the LCD should still be black, press the lowest button beside the LCD to turn on the Screen, and the camera will chagne into super macro mode. Here are some samples from my F100 in the first lot the first 7 or so were taken just with the camera, most of the rest were taken with a macro filter added. The second lot in the super macros were taken just with the camera but in Super Macro Mode which can be accessed through a couple of methods. The one I use is to have the batteries showing half flat and shoot a macro shot using the flash and hold down the wide-angle button and when the lcd goes blank because of the batteries being low the lens will revert to wide angle and then you can focus down to about 5 mm from the front of the lens at 2.8. It is not very good for flash shots but it is great if there is enough available light. http://www.pbase.com/relate2/macros http://www.pbase.com/relate3/super_macros The Minolta F100-300 series cameras are very very good. -http://www.pbase.com/relate2 Subj: Date: From: To: List Manager response 23/09/2003 12:46:29 GMT Daylight Time newsweek-request@dpreview.com mrkw9@aol.com Sent from the Internet (Details) >>>> subscribe newsweek Subscribed.
