2006 Summer Millie Lewis Actors, Models & Talent Competition A Division of the Millie Lewis American Modeling & Talent Convention June 27–July 3, 2006 – Marriott World Center – Orlando, Florida Actor’s Scene Contestant’s Information Packet Copyright © 2005 Carey Lewis Arban www.millielewis.com NOTE: Although your official AMTC Director is your teacher and guide, please feel free to contact our Administrative Office with special questions or concerns. 510 Haddington Lane, Peachtree City, GA 30269; 770-487-6656; fax: 770-487-6763 Send e-mail correspondence to info@millielewis.com Member: Greater Atlanta Better Business Bureau Rules and procedures are subject to change at the discretion of the Competition, with the intention of improving the AMTC to best benefit the Contestants, Staff, and Scouts. Welcome! Welcome to the Millie Lewis Actors, Models & Talent Competition (AMTC). We want your experience to be rewarding and meaningful. The AMTC is a family event, designed to unite you with many of the best Agents, Managers, and Casting Directors in the world. These Agents will judge competitions, teach you in seminars, and talk with you personally during interviews. You will learn about this industry. Competition is keen, and you must work hard to excel. Competitions include Runway, Photography (Fashion or Commercial), Swimsuit, Creative Runway, and Spokesperson for Models; TV Commercials, Soap Opera, Situation Comedy, Cold Reading, Scene Study and Monologue for Actors. Singers, Dancers, Comedians, and other Entertainers may compete in the open talent division. Age groups include children, teens, and adults. Categories are offered for beginners through professionals. Our Mission Statement The mission of the Millie Lewis Actors, Models & Talent Competition is to promote excellence and integrity in the acting and entertainment industries. The Agents hold a great responsibility: the hopes, dreams, and potential of each contestant! You, a prospective actor, or entertainer, have entrusted your vision of the future with us. We pledge to use our knowledge and connections to teach you, to promote you when advisable, and to protect you always. We will continue to strive to be the best acting and entertainment competition in North America: to give fair representation to all; to provide excellent exposure to the most reputable regional, national, and international Agents; to host an open forum for learning about this exciting industry. As a family business, we are in this business for families. Your best chance of success lies in your own motivation built on the foundation of family support. Our goal is to provide a protected environment: one where you can meet with industry leaders, learn what it takes, and make an informed decision about your future. By coming to AMTC, you are a winner! You will work to improve your appearance, poise, presentation skills, and self-confidence; you have chosen to make the most of yourself. You will meet the challenge of competition and constructive criticism. You will perform successfully in front of a large group of people. These accomplishments build a positive self-image for any present or future career. Not everyone can act or entertain professionally. These fields are highly specialized and competitive. The Millie Lewis Actors, Models & Talent Competition offers the opportunity to excel – a chance to discover your potential, to learn about this industry, to pursue a dream, and to meet your future with no regrets. What Can You Expect? The Event Itself Millie Lewis has produced over 50 Competitions since 1982. You can expect a fastpaced, well-organized, on-schedule, exciting, and tiring six days. Events start early and conclude late (see our sample agenda). You will be impressed by the hundreds of other contestants from all over North America and beyond— contestants who are beautiful, talented, intelligent, interesting, positive, and funny. You will be even more impressed with the large group of acclaimed Agents, Scouts, Managers, and Casting Directors from all over the world. These are industry leaders whom you might never meet under normal circumstances, much less all in one place at one time. They are friendly, to the point, and always honest. Millie Lewis is a family event. Indeed, you will meet three generations of the Millie Lewis family who own and run the Competition. For you, we realize that your best chance of success comes with the support, understanding, and commitment of your own family. Therefore, education is strongly emphasized in a four-way partnership between AMTC, Actor’s Scene, your family and you. You will leave Convention with a good understanding of the modeling, acting & talent industries, how to start, and where you may best belong. A safe and supportive environment is provided for you. Your Outcome At past Competitions, approximately 65% of our contestants received at least one callback from a Scout. A “call-back” indicates interest from an Agent. It may become an offer of representation, a referral to another Agent, Manager or Casting Director, or a callback may simply give you advice or indicate future interest. Our supportive network of acting and entertainment Agents, Managers and Casting Directors share our mission of teaching and assisting aspiring models, actors and entertainers. Even if you don’t receive a callback, AMTC offers Open Interviews. All but a few of the Agents participate, and many contestants with great personalities, photos, or an impressive resume receive offers from Agents who did not call them back. Many of those who do not choose modeling, acting or entertainment as a career go on to successful, local, part-time careers. When they are back home, they are ready to work. They have superior skills to other local models or entertainers who have not had the intense and unique training of AMTC. Still others, who received encouragement from the Agents, will work hard to better themselves according to their suggestions: perhaps to participate in local theatre, to improve their appearance, to get different photos or a new headshot, to work locally first to increase their self-confidence, or to improve their audition skills. The desired contract may indeed come later. For teens and children, an exciting “fringe benefit” of involvement in this industry is a large boost in self-esteem. Students become leaders in their schools and among their peers, instead of followers. They know that excellent attitudes, conduct, and grades are the standard in this industry, and they work to be among the best. What Makes AMTC Different from Other Events? We at the Millie Lewis Competition often find ourselves apologizing for our “competitors.” So many people have had poor experiences. Perhaps they have spent money unwisely with photo scams or franchise schooling. Perhaps they have been to another search or event lacking integrity, and full of false promises. Unfortunately, the modeling, acting and entertainment industries are largely unregulated. As a consumer, you must rely on four factors whenever you meet someone in these fields: History: How long has this Agent, Casting Director, Photographer, Company, or Convention been in business? What is their record with the Better Business Bureau? “New” may seem exciting, but it’s risky for you, as a consumer. The Millie Lewis Competition has been in business since 1982, and the Millie Lewis Agencies since 1960. Our administrative office is in metropolitan Atlanta, and we are members of their Better Business Bureau. The BBB website is www.atlanta.bbb.org. We have worked with every major modeling Agent in the world, as well as many national acting and entertainment Agents. Most of them know our competition as “Millie Lewis.” Reputation: What do other respected industry professionals and nationally recognized organizations say about them? What do their local clients and associates think? The Millie Lewis Actors, Models & Talent Competition has an unparalleled record of customer and Agent satisfaction. Our goal is not to meet but to exceed your expectations. The name, “Millie Lewis,” is respected worldwide. Success Stories: Who are they? If any person or company has achieved recognition for modeling, acting or entertainment placement, they will be publicizing this, as we do. AMTC has hundreds of notable successes and thousands of satisfied attendees. Gut Feeling: How do you feel about what you have heard? Does the person you are meeting make you feel comfortable? Too often, we ignore our basic good sense and talk ourselves into something that we want, regardless of the proper path. If anyone promises or implies success to you in this industry, turn and walk away. Regardless of your beauty, talent or charisma, success is impossible to predict. The Safe Path to Success Since we are a family business, we believe that family provides your safety net. First of all, your own family should be involved every step of the way. Secondly, AMTC Directors and Owners become your second family, wanting your satisfaction, education, personal growth, and ultimate success. In this desire, we invite only those Agents, Managers, and Casting Directors to meet you that we feel meet our family standards. Although we cannot guarantee anyone’s conduct, we put a tremendous amount of thought into what happens to you after AMTC. Our Website Our primary website is www.millielewis.com. Our Contestant’s Only website is www.amtconline.com. Please visit this password protected website for Rules, Tips, Curriculum, and Updates! *Your Director will give you this password, or you can email the AMTC office at www.millielewis.com. You Must . . . Commit yourself to work very hard and maintain a positive attitude. Having the talent of an actor or entertainer is not enough to succeed. You must work to possess . . . The Five Attributes to Success 1. The look of a model or the talent of an entertainer is largely God-given. Although models may improve their appearance, and talent should perfect their performing skills, a “gift” is still evident. 2. A warm, friendly, and outgoing personality is the second attribute of success. If you have a “sparkle” that is evident in an interview and a nice temperament during the job, you will build friends, fans, and a career. 3. Intelligence is the third attribute of success. School-age performers should be excellent students with discipline and a good work ethic. They are observant, learn quickly, and memorize easily. 4. Family support is the fourth attribute of success. If your loved ones provide you with encouragement and emotional stability, this support can make the difference between success and failure. 5. Desire is the fifth and most important attribute of success. A love of the industry, a commitment to try, and a determination to succeed mean everything. When other prospective models or entertainers leave the industry because they did not get immediate results, those with true desire will persevere. They will learn from their mistakes; they will improve themselves; they will continue to try. Success follows them. A Note to Parents of Children and Teens Your role at AMTC will be as an active Participant. You will assist your “Competitor” with education, proper nutrition, adequate sleep, coordination of events, transportation if needed, and emotional support. “Stage” parents may be accepted in the pageant industry, but they are not in the modeling or entertainment industries, nor at AMTC. You must always let your child speak for him or herself. In addition, AMTC and/ or this industry must be your child’s dream, and not a reflection of your own. AMTC Ethics and Behavior Agreement Between AMTC, Actor’s Scene, and AMTC Contestant I, ___________________________________________________, hereby desire and agree to attend the upcoming Millie Lewis Actors, Models & Talent Competition. I understand that my attitude, work ethic, and conduct are vital to my potential success. I further understand that I am representing not just myself, but also my family, Actor’s Scene, and the Millie Lewis Convention. In this regard certain behaviors are expected: For Children and Teens 1. I will attempt to make good to excellent grades in school. I understand that excellent grades are standard for actors, models and talent. They indicate that I attend class regularly, do my homework, and get along well with my teachers. In addition, excellent grades will be helpful to me if I am chosen to do an assignment during school. My principal will be more likely to excuse me for work. 2. I will be a role model and a leader at school. I will exhibit positive behavior toward my peers, teachers, and administrators and will engage in activities that will promote my intellectual, moral, and physical growth. 3. I will not smoke, drink alcohol, take drugs, or engage in other adult or unhealthy habits, as this is not conducive to success. 4. I will exercise, eat well, and try to avoid junk food and soft drinks. 5. I will maintain an enthusiastic and positive attitude to the best of my ability. For Adults I will behave with professionalism and decorum while associated with the Millie Lewis Actors, Models & Talent Competition. I will maintain an open-minded, enthusiastic, and positive attitude and realize that my success is dependent upon my outlook, work ethic, ability, appearance, and market factors beyond my control. If I have any questions or complaints, I will go directly to my Director or AMTC. I will not display negativity in any form that may affect the progress of other contestants. Sample Parent & Contestant Comments Dear AMTC: It was the best experience I’ve ever had in my life. I met so many wonderful people. Not just the Agents, but all the people I met. It was such a family-oriented atmosphere. You think it’s going to be a big, crazy event and nobody is going to be nice. And then you get there. Once you get there, it really has the feeling of being cozy, and everybody gets to know everybody. It’s the best thing I’ve ever been to. I learned how to act on camera for the first time because I never knew how before. I learned a lot from the Agents’ workshops and seminars: Things like how to get a head shot taken, whether or not to move to New York now or later, whether to take more classes. The seminars and workshops were the best talks I’d ever heard. The Agents made you feel like they were here to help you figure out how your career was going to happen. They made you feel relaxed and comfortable; never making you feel like they were higher or up above you or talking down to you. —Angela Sephton, former participant Dear AMTC: It was a really memorable experience. Not only did I get exposed to what seemed like a huge number of Agents under one roof at one time, but I also got to make friends I didn’t have. It was just a great opportunity for me. I learned how to have confidence in myself and not be nervous. I learned how to get up in front of people. I’d never really auditioned before, so they taught me that. I recommend it to anyone. In fact, I have recommended AMTC to many people. It will build your confidence up even if you don’t want to pursue a dream of acting or modeling. It’s just something everyone should experience. —Naomi Krantz, former participant Dear AMTC: AMTC was great. I couldn’t ask for anything else. For many years I was constantly trying to go to New York and meet with Agents. The only people I would meet would be the receptionist. So I never got my foot in the door. When I went to the AMTC Convention, I won the Overall Commercial Competition. After that I got cast in an independent film. I’ve been in a lot of industrial films for which I may never win an Oscar, but I’ve been successful. Now I will be moving to New York where I will be working with an Agent that I did get at the AMTC Competition. Before I came to AMTC, I thought I knew a lot, but at AMTC with all the seminars that were given, I learned what really happens behind all those doors. Because the people who were putting on the seminars were the same people I was trying to get in contact with. So I was able to hear what really has to happen in this business straight from the horse’s mouth. And in the last two and a half years since AMTC, I’ve done more than I did in the previous ten years. —Nelson Diaz, former participant Dear AMTC: Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. They told us that if this is what she really wants to do, then we should definitely go for it. I just can’t thank AMTC enough. I’d recommend it for any parent with a talented child. —Jeff Brockl, father of Bianca, supporting actress in “The Wedding Planner.” Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Sample Parent & Contestant Comments To Other Parents: (from an on-camera interview) There is no way that you could go to New York or L.A. or Chicago to get the kind of exposure you get at AMTC, because all the top Agents are there. For the price you pay for AMTC compared to traveling to all those places and staying there for a week or two and maybe getting to meet a couple of Agents, that’s not even feasible for me and most people. I actually came back a second time to AMTC because Mitch enjoyed it so much. He started working in Miami, where he booked his first two national commercials. And then we went to New York… The day we were supposed to leave, we got a phone call from an Agent saying, “We need you to come to L.A.” So we were flown to L.A. where Mitch was booked on a pilot for a comedy called “Daddio,” with Michael Chiklis. Mitch played the youngest son in the family. And from there he was lucky enough to book a Reba McIntyre show… on WB. He’s done a few more commercials since then. He stays busy. Mitch loves the work he’s doing. I would tell any parent to bring their child to Millie Lewis if they’ve shown any interest in wanting to be on television. If they’ve got any talent or shown you anything at all, you should go to the Millie Lewis AMTC, because this is the place where you’re guaranteed that if your child has that special something, they will be recognized. —Karen Holleman, mother of Mitch Holleman, cast member of Reba.” Dear Carey and Bill, Your convention provided my daughter, Jessica, with lessons that will benefit her throughout her entire life. I have always taught her that even though she has a physical disability, she is no different than anyone else. Participation in the convention events and being recognized for her talent and beauty at the awards ceremony reinforced Jessica's belief in herself. Yesterday she asked me if I knew what self esteem meant. She said that she did, and she felt that she had a lot of it. Remembering how bright and proud her face looked when she stood on the runway and the banquet stage, I, too, believe she has a lot of it. Providing an opportunity for a child to experience this feeling is something you should be very proud of. Thank you.... —Kathy Yates, Parent Dear Directors & AMTC, Just a little note to express our deepest feelings on our experience with your company… All of these classes really paid off. Jackie truly enjoyed them. She even enjoyed the homework (practicing)... I cannot begin to describe the feelings we had on convention. It was the best, most exciting, and educational time of Jackie's life. As for my husband and me, we felt that it was the type of environment we wanted for our Jackie; it was a family experience. . . Our Jackie grew 20 feet, and she's still growing. P.S. I feel that this is very important to all who read this. The very first thing our AMTC Scout, Kim, told us was, "We cannot guarantee anything to you." Education and commitment is what she wanted for each person. Our Jackie did not win one thing at convention. She did not have any "call backs," but what she received through this program is priceless. —Cindy Green, parent Dear AMTC: It has been a whirlwind for Marcus since our return home from AMTC. We recently spent a week in L.A. and will be signing a contract soon. While there, Marcus was fortunate to be selected for pilot principal casting at Paramount. We want to thank you for the wonderful program you put forth. Our experience has been almost indescribable, and your staff is to be commended for absolute top-notch professionalism. Thank you for the most incredible seminars, speakers, competitions, and facilities. You all did a spectacular job, and this is one week Marcus and I will never, ever, in our lifetimes forget. Fashion Models Two main forms of modeling exist: fashion modeling and commercial modeling. Fashion modeling is more publicized. Fashion models are on magazine covers, editorial pages, cosmetic ads, and designer runways. A fashion model may be selling clothes or a beauty product, like makeup, skin care, or perfume. Fashion models have specific size and height requirements. They are usually tall and very thin, with well defined bone structure and symmetrical facial features. They often photograph better than they look in person. Salaries are high. Competition is intense. Shorter models have found success in the fashion industry, but these few represent the exception to the rule. AMTC’s Charlotte Dodds has been one example of a petite Super Model. AMTC Actress, Mena Suvari, would be another. No absolute criteria exist. Studying the models and looks in fashion magazines will show variety and diversity. Reviewing these magazines, from trendy to classic, can develop your understanding of the looks currently in demand. Desirable faces, colors, body types, and styles may change from season to season. Fashion designers, magazine editors, clients, consumers, marketing consultants, and even the economy and world events help determine what and who are currently “in style.” To remain competitive, modeling agencies must carefully select new models to develop and promote. Commercial Models Commercial modeling encompasses 90% of the industry. In commercial modeling, the model is selling anything other than a fashion or beauty product; the model is holding a Pepsi can, standing by a computer, playing tennis, or eating in a restaurant. The commercial model is selling a product or may be representing a service or a company. Spokesmodels are also commercial models. Commercial models come in all shapes and sizes, as long as they are "bookable." Commercial models are often attractive, but they may also be ordinary, interesting, or even, character types. Salaries are good. Work is often part-time. Many commercial models also act in TV commercials and movies. You see commercial models everywhere: on magazine covers (not “Vogue”, but others like “Good Housekeeping” or “Golf Digest”), catalogues, newspaper ads and inserts, billboards, posters, brochures and even on packages in grocery stores and game products. These models are not famous like supermodels, but they can entice you to buy everything from food to shampoo, shoes to health insurance, and they can earn a handsome salary. These models can be absolutely beautiful, or they can look like a typical neighbor and friend -- and the best part is, unlike fashion modeling, commercial models have no height, weight or age restrictions. It is available to everyone. The best way to get work as a commercial model is to learn acting skills, be self-motivated, and have the time to accept work. Rules & Competition Guidelines Important Notice About the AMTC Competitions Rules & Guidelines AMTC Rules are subject to change. Please refer to the www.amtconline.com website for updates and changes. *Your Director will give you the password, or contact info@millielewis.com. Rules and suggestions for success for specific competitions follow this page. All AMTC competitions are proctored, using the official AMTC rules. All clothing worn in AMTC competitions is subject to scrutiny by our official proctors. If a proctor decides that a competition outfit does not fulfill all official rules, a contestant could lose points or be disqualified from the competition in question. Directors will be informed of such point deductions. If any contestant or parent at AMTC sees an outfit or performance that may not follow the AMTC rules, he or she is encouraged to report it to the Registration Desk. Due to the heightened nerves of performers backstage and directly before an event, AMTC will allow a contestant to go ahead and compete who is violating a rule, so long as the rule being violated is not overtly or sexually offensive. National modeling and talent Agents all request a clean, natural appearance. While you may not be overtly breaking a rule by wearing too much makeup or having your hair “too big,” you may harm your chances of success. Please remember that you need to dress by national standards, and not by what your hometown friends think of as attractive. 1. AMTC wardrobe rules and guidelines are designed with input from national Agents. They call attention to the model or talent, and NOT to the wardrobe. If a contestant wears too much makeup, too many accessories, too short a skirt, too tight a top, too much hair in the face, too big a hat, too many patterns, or too much of anything, attention is drawn away from the contestant and/or her performance. Keep it simple. Some AMTC Directors have their own wardrobe rules for their group, such as “no jeans.” This rule is NOT an AMTC rule, but we respect the right of Directors to further regulate their own groups to reflect their best judgment. Please do not be discouraged if you see someone breaking the rules. Remember, rule violations and “stretching the rules” take place in all major competitions, including professional sports and academics. AMTC will do its best to monitor rule violations and penalize according to standards. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Fashion and Commercial Photography Competition Rules and Suggestions 1. Dress: female models wear their AMTC T-shirt with a black or denim skirt. Female fashion models and child models should wear the hemline of the skirt ABOVE THE KNEE. Female commercial models may wear their black or denim skirt above or below the knee. However, no fashion or commercial model may wear a skirt that is less than 4” below the buttocks OR a skirt where undergarments can be seen by judges who sit below an elevated runway. 2. Dress: male models wear their AMTC T-shirt and black pants or blue jeans (not shorts). 3. Dress: child models 12 and under should wear the female and male requirements listed above. Girls should wear skirts ABOVE THE KNEE. Shoes should not have heels higher than one inch. 4. Shoes: casual shoes are required, as matching the casual “t-shirt” theme of the wardrobe. In addition, cute, clean sneakers or tennis shoes are encouraged (but not required) and bring a “New York” casual look. 5. AMTC Tees are received at the actual event. 6. All Contestants should wear proper undergarments. Women should wear bras. 7. Photo Competition is not a fashion show, and modeling is not allowed. No carry on accessories are allowed. Contestants may use no turns, no pauses, and no hand positions while on stage. 8. Contestants (or agencies) must submit 2 digital images per Contestant. Images must be vertical, color or black and white. *Dark images do not project well. 9. Cigarettes, alcohol, nudity, underwear, lingerie, or strong sexual suggestion are not permitted in the competition photos. AMTC is a family convention. 10. Images must be submitted in digital format, on a high-resolution photo CD, with labels for Contestant's name, category, and Agency. CD’s will not be returned. Images may also be emailed to info.millielewis.com. 11. Synopsis of graphic requirements: Graphics File Type: JPEG (IBM bit order); Compression: None; Resolution: 672 pixels wide x 1024 pixels high @ 96 pixels per inch; No horizontal images; Output Mode: RGB or greyscale video; Bit depth: 24 bit color or 8 bit grey scale; Labeling: Two-digit category # (01-24), last name, first name or initial. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. 12. Example of Proper Label: 04, Smith, Mary. If you are unsure about the scanning requirements and want professional help, Computer and Graphics Support is available through Terry Stone at 205-991-7952. He can be emailed at terryjstone@aol.com. 13. Contestant will enter Center Stage, walking first to an “X”, then directly to the microphone (see diagram). She will introduce herself, saying her name, age, height, and Agency (3 words or less for Agency name). Children 12 and under do not need to announce height. Mature adults do not need to announce age. Images are projected on giant screens behind the model. Example: "Hello, I'm Mary Smith, 16, 5 feet, and from The Academy." Remember say 5 feet 2, not 5 foot 2! Note: A convention assistant will be placed by the microphone to assist with height adjustments. What Types of Photos Do You Need? 1. A new model only needs 2-6 photos (in general) to show the Agents. Agents eliminate potential new models by remembering the weakest pictures that they see. Only bring the very best photos to AMTC. 2. Please read the “Photo Advice” section of the www.millielewis.com website for photo examples, “Do’s and Don’ts,” recommended photographers, and advice. 3. The types of pictures generally required: a. Fashion models need a good headshot (natural), a swimsuit shot or body shot, and 0-4 other photos of your choice. *Good digital polaroids are now paramount! b. Commercial models need a good headshot (natural), and 1-4 other photos showing you in a variety of outfits and situations (age appropriate), including career shots, character shots, or sports shots. Props are helpful. c. Actors need a headshot in a very simple setting with natural hair and makeup (just as you normally look). 3/4 length shots are acceptable, too. Color shots are now used in Los Angeles. d. Model’s photos may be 8 x 10 or 9 x 12. Actor’s photos are 8 x 10. e. Singers and Dancers should have a good headshot showing you at your most bookable “best.” f. Models and Actors (or Singers/ Dancers) need BOTH modeling shots and an Actor’s or Talent headshot. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. What Else Do You Need? 1. Models may elect to bring a Portfolio Book or “Mini-Book.” (Please see our resources at the back of this packet.) This is not required. 2. Models may wish to bring Composite Cards. These composite cards are like extra large “business cards,” often 5” x 7” or so. They may be printed on one side or both sides with 1-6 photos and your measurements, hair color, eye color, sizes and statistics. (Please see our samples on line.) If you do print composite cards, AMTC does not recommend a large number, unless you are already registered with an Agency and they wish you to have more printed. Recommended number for a beginning model: 25-50. Composites are not required. 3. If you don’t bring Comp Cards, models may wish to bring 10-20 laser copies of their best photo, with your statistics and contact information printed on the back. Good laser prints or smaller sized prints are acceptable. (These are not needed if composite cards are printed.) 4. Fashion Models may need excellent, polaroid-style digital images. These are the most current trend for booking new models (or selecting new models) in major fashion agencies. Definite guidelines exist in getting good polaroids. Polaroid submissions can make or break a new model. Please see Photo Advice. 5. Actors, Singers, and Dancers need to bring an 8 x 10 headshot, with a onepage resume stapled to the back. 5-50 copies are suggested. 6. Singers should also bring 2-5 demo CD’s or tapes (CD’s are preferred) with 23 songs. This demo does not have to be professionally engineered, but should have acceptable sound quality. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Fashion Runway Competition Rules and Suggestions 1. Fashion Runway Competition may only be entered by Fashion or Child Model categories. 2. Dress: Female Fashion Runway outfit: solid color bottom, solid color top with a minimum-length cap sleeve, and one accessory. Your garment bottom may be a skirt, shorts or pants. Your garment top may be a shirt or a blouse, but must have a cap length sleeve or longer. 3. Top and bottom for Teen and Adult Fashion Females may not have any patterns, stripes, prints, large emblems, large logos, numbers, or writing on them (i.e. Polo logo, football number). 4. Agents do not want to see skirts too short. Judges are looking up a three-foot elevation. Skirts must be at least 4” below the buttocks. Points will be deducted if the AMTC proctor feels that the skirt is too short or underwear is seen. 5. Female models are allowed ONE accessory. Your accessory may be a belt, scarf, brimless hat, necklace, earrings or bracelet. You may not wear more than one accessory. Even earrings can be distracting. Please remember that you are modeling yourself– NOT an outfit. Therefore, you want all of the attention on you– NOT your clothing, earrings, etc. 6. A simple belt with pants is NOT considered an accessory. 7. Appropriate undergarments (including bras) must be worn. White or sheer tops become translucent under the intense lights of the stage. 8. Agents DO NOT WANT to see sexy clothing and unanimously dislike it. 9. No hats with brims may be worn as these limit the judge's view of your face. 10. No DRESSES, swimsuits, cocktail clothes, or evening wear are allowed. Avoid sequins, satin and chiffon, or other primarily dressy materials. Avoid any outfit that could be construed as evening wear. Points will be deducted if our Proctor feels the contestant is wearing dressy clothing. 11. Layers are acceptable but must fit above-mentioned sleeve, color, and simplicity requirements and may not be taken off-- Examples: a red jacket over a denim shirt, or a black wool sweater over a blue shirt. If they are taken off, they become carry-on accessories (see below). 12. Any type of shoes, boots, tights, or socks are acceptable. Be cautious of strappy or sparkly sandals, as they could make an outfit too dressy. Teens, if you wear heels, make sure you can walk in them. If not, wear stylish flats or sneakers. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. 13. Dress: Male Fashion Runway Outfit: solid color bottom, solid color top. One accessory is allowed. 14. Top and bottom for Teen and Adult Fashion Males may not have any patterns, stripes, prints, large emblems, large logos, numbers, or writing on them (i.e. Polo logo, football number). 15. A simple belt with pants is NOT considered an accessory. A tie IS considered an accessory. However, a suit is fine with NO other accessories (such as a scarf or hat). 16. Men may not go shirtless, or have their shirts unbuttoned to show the chest. Show your chest in Swimsuit. 17. Dress: Child Models (ages 3-12) MAY wear patterns on their top and bottom like plaid, florals, etc. Large logos or emblems are still discouraged, as they draw attention to the clothing instead of the model. 18. Child models (ages 12 and under) may NOT wear heels higher than 1". 19. Child models may NOT wear evening wear, dressy clothes or pageant dresses. 20. Dress for ALL Fashion Models: no carry-on accessories are allowed; Examples: purses, sunglasses, briefcases, umbrellas, cigars, cigarettes in holders, etc. Accessories worn when entering the stage may not be removed, as they are then considered "carried accessories.” Examples: gloves, hat, scarf, etc. 21. Dress for ALL Fashion Models: outerwear is acceptable, but may not be taken off-- Examples: coat, hat, gloves, etc. If gloves, coats or hats are removed, they become carried accessories. 22. Each contestant may walk the runway one time only. This means one time down the runway, then back up- no doubling back. Models should walk on the right side of the runway. Contestants may NOT use too many turns; NO long pauses. 23. Contestant will enter and exit Center Stage. He or she should follow the X’s Please see the stage diagram. A prompter backstage will cue each model on. Music will be taped, with a medium to fast beat. 24. Don’t use too many (if any) turns. Our runway experts say: "less is best!" Many of the top routines have models performing half-turns or no turns. For men and children, “no turns” are the NYC norm. If a model is unsure of a turn, take it out. 25. Don’t use "gimmicks": men straightening tie, children- when they wave, salute, wink, pose, curtsy, etc. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. 26. Don’t use distracting hand positions. Assume a hand position only for a natural reason (such as to show sleeves or pockets), and don’t change your hand positions often. Hold a hand position for at least 5 seconds. The weakest routines show the same mistakes: too many turns and hand positions. 27. A simple walk with excellent posture, graceful hands, friendly eyecontact and smiling will win the judge's approval. "Over-modeling" gets a model nothing but smirks or sympathy. Occasionally, we see exceptions: models with elaborate or "different" routines, who win. These models must be exceptional to "pull it off." Our best recommendation: keep it simple. 28. Please remember that a routine should fit the outfit and that the outfit match the contestant's age and lifestyle. Teens and kids should be fun, bright, colorful, and natural! Use "Seventeen" or “Teen Vogue” for examples, rather than "Vogue" or your own images of what a "model should look like." Kids, check out Barnes & Noble or Borders for "Vogue Bambini!" Mature Fashion Models, look marketable as an attractive, business woman or mom. Do not dress too young. Fashion men, know that your body and style are important too. Maybe choose flatfront pants instead of pleated ones. Synopsis of Fashion Runway Competition “Do’s and Don’ts” Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Solid color skirt, pants, or shorts. Contestants must wear a cotton T-shirt or, button up oxford shirt or blouse in a solid, vibrant color. (blue, green, red, etc.) Pastels, white and black do not photograph well. Do not wear prints, stripes, dots, or company logos. Bras must be worn, and tube tops or sexy tops must NOT. 2. Large or dangling jewelry is not allowed, as it distracts from the message (and the contestant.) Simple outfits in a solid, jewel color and neckline that enhance the contestant's face are recommended (not white, black, or pastels). 3. Contestants may choose from any of the scripts provided. Please try to choose age or lifestyle-appropriate scripts for each contestant. 4. Scripts will not be timed, but contestants must follow the script and not deliberately "ad lib" extra lines or rewrite for extra emphasis. 5. Contestants must stand upright (not sit or lie down) during performance. 6. Contestants should wear their competition numbers pinned by the neck or shoulder to be seen on camera. 7. Contestants who forget their lines may not start over. 8. As in a real TV audition, contestants will be taken to an "audition room," equipped with lights, camera, backdrop, cameraman, AMTC staff, and a large "X" on the floor. A boom microphone will be lowered from above the contestants’ heads. Contestants should perform into the camera. Judges and audience will be in the ballroom and see the commercial on a large screen. Camera angle will be shot from the chest up. The acting of the script is entirely up to each contestant's interpretation and creativity, within the bounds of good taste. 9. Try to lose your regional accent (if you have one), if only for your script. In addition to professional voice and diction teachers, self-study tapes are available. 10. Avoid hand or head movements or motions. Agents DO NOT WANT TO SEE AMATEUR ACTORS USE HAND MOVEMENTS IN A TIGHT SHOT (such as the AMTC camera angle). Even professional actors use little hand or head movement for close-in shots. Also, a large or sudden movement runs the risk of taking an actor "off-camera" entirely. 11. Avoid the distraction of jewelry, big hairstyles, hair “pieces,” or any hair hanging in the face. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Soap Opera and Situation Comedy Competition Rules and Suggestions 1. A contestant may enter either Soap or Sitcom, but not both. 2. A contestant may choose from the 4 scripts provided for each age group. 3. The contestant will perform with a professional actor or actress at AMTC. This actor will stand off camera and beside the camera. Unlike TV Commercial Competition, the contestant should look at the professional actor reading with him or her, instead of the camera. 4. This Competition may be live or taped at the discretion of AMTC. 5. Other rules from the TV Competition apply here as well. Cold Reading and Scene Study Competition Rules & Suggestions 1. Cold Reading and Scene Study are intended for professional actors or extremely gifted amateurs, and can only be entered with the approval of your Director. 2. Children who enter Cold Reading or Scene Study must be able to read proficiently and handle pressure well. 3. In Cold Reading Competition the contestant is given a TV commercial length script approximately 2-10 minutes before the competition. The contestant should carry the script on stage and refer to it as needed. 4. Once on stage, the contestant should hold the script at waist – chest level. Do not block your face or number. 5. In Scene Study Competition the contestant will be partnered with another contestant standing in line, and the pair will be given a short scene to read together (approximately 2-10 minutes before the competition). Partners cannot be prearranged. Contestants will perform together, but will be judged individually. The contestants must carry their scripts on stage and refer to them as needed. 6. In Scene Study, the contestants should stand slightly angled toward each other, but still allowing the judges a good view of your faces. 7. These Competitions may be live or taped at the discretion of AMTC. 8. Other rules from the TV Competition apply here as well. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Swimsuit Competition Rules and Suggestions 1. Female models must be very, very thin and must have hips 36” or smaller. Preferred hip size is 34” (35” for very tall models). Models should wear a one-piece swimsuit: no cutouts; no suits cut extra low between the cleavage, no holes, mesh inserts, or 2 piece suits connected by a few strips of material; no suits where the back and sides are completely missing. Contestant should have bare legs and flat shoes (or no shoes). Makeup should be minimal; hair should be natural (curly if curly; straight if straight) and away from the face. 2. Models with normal figures who are not VERY thin should not enter Swimsuit Competition. While their figures may be quite healthy and attractive, international swimsuit standards (AMTC Swimsuit judges’ standards) are quite specific. Models with normal, rather than very thin figures, will not help themselves in front of this set of judges. Any height of model, commercial or fashion, is eligible to enter Swimsuit, but her figure should be extremely thin. 3. Male contestants should wear a one-piece, conservative, boxer style swimsuit and should look fit. Male models cannot wear extremely low-hanging swimsuits that sit right above their private parts. Contestants are encouraged to wear tennis shoes or sandals, although bare feet are acceptable. 4. Plus Swimsuit contestants should be sizes 10-16, absolutely no smaller or larger, hip size a minimum of 40”, and 5’8” or above. Plus fashion models should be toned and well proportioned. Placeable plus models would not be considered overweight, but statuesque. Plus models may wear sheer-to-the-waist hose and flat shoes, if desired. They may not wear coverups. 5. Boys and girls 12 and under must follow the same rules. 6. Turns are not permitted (except for the pause and 1/2 turn at the end of the runway in front of the judges). 7. Models will enter Center Stage and walk the X's as directed. Each model will come down and pause in front of the judges (1-2 seconds). Remaining choreography instructions will be given at the AMTC dress rehearsal. 8. Models are encouraged to smile, as befitting the “beauty and the beach” theme of this competition. 9. Female models should stand in a flattering position with one foot in front. Male models should stand in an open stance with feet spread evenly apart. 10. All Swimsuit contestants are subject to being measured. Rehearsal is mandatory. Suits and measurements will be checked. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Spokesperson Competition Rules and Suggestions 1. This commercial modeling competition is designed for models and actors who are attractive, animated, and speak well. Height is not important. It showcases the ability of a spokesperson to represent a company or product in a live performance. Model may wear an outfit of his or her choice, with no restrictions, as long as it is in good taste. No swimsuits, lingerie or sexy attire. No sexual, cigarette, alcohol related, or violent subject matter will be allowed. 2. Model may use hand-held props, easily carried on and off the stage. 3. Model will walk to the end of the runway or stage to a microphone, and perform a 20 second speech representing a company, cause, or product of her choice. The subject of her 20-second speech can be real or imaginary, serious or humorous. Speeches will be timed, and time will be called. Points will be deducted if model’s talk goes over 20 seconds. Singing, Dance & Monologue Competitions Those talented contestants who wish to compete in Singing, Dance and Monologue Competitions must arrive at AMTC on Day One (at the latest) and be prepared to perform on the evening of Day One (no earlier than 6:00 pm) or the morning of Day Two. (See sample agenda). Specific requests of competition day can be made, but AMTC cannot guarantee exact placement. Final time scheduling depends on the number of entrants and judge’s requests. Singing, Dance, and Monologue Contestants are not only competing for trophies, call backs, and cash prizes within their Day One and Day Two competitions, but they are also competing for placement in the Talent and Monologue Shows on Saturday. These prestigious shows are a highlight of AMTC. Only approximately 20% of the entrants make the Talent and Monologue Shows. Please note: AMTC does not recommend that Contestants come to AMTC only for Singing or Dance. A contestant should also have a strong interest in Acting or Modeling to receive the full benefit of AMTC. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Monologue Competition Rules and Suggestions 1. This prestigious competition is limited to a one minute performance. (See note below for singers or dancers who are chosen for the Talent Show.) 2. For contestants choosing monologues, light or humorous material often scores better than "heavy" drama selections at the AMTC. 3. Do not use profanity or explicit adult material, as AMTC is a family event, and children of all ages will be in the audience. 4. Monologue contestants should see the “Mari Lyn Henry” suggestions following these rules. Ms. Henry is a frequent judge, former head of Casting for ABC Daytime TV and is currently a Talent Manager in New York and Los Angeles. She has also written a widely acclaimed book about acting. (See our “Recommended Reading” section.) 5. Costumes are not suggested for Monologue Contestants. (Please see the “Mari Lyn Henry Suggestions for appearance guidelines.”) 6. Lavaliere microphones or hand held microphones are available for Monologue Contestants. 7. Routines will be timed and time will be called. 8. Select top Monologues will perform in a special Monologue Show on Saturday. Time limit will remain at one minute. Contestants selected for the Monologue Show are based on scores. Stand-Up Comedy Competition Rules and Suggestions 1. Stand Up Comedians will compete in Preliminaries (and Finals, if selected) with the Singers and Dancers, so as not to be confused with Monologue. 2. This specialized competition is limited to a one minute performance. 3. Do not use profanity or explicit adult material, as AMTC is a family event, and children of all ages will be in the audience. 4. Lavaliere microphones, hand held or stand microphones are available. 5. Stand Up is such a small and specialized competition. Age groups will not be offered. 6. Routines will be timed and time will be called. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Talent Competition (Singing & Dance) Rules and Suggestions 1. Singers and Dancers are limited to a choice of 1 song, unless the singer or dancer is also competing in the Duo or Group Division. A contestant may compete in both Singing and Dance. 2. A recommended source for karaoke style accompaniment is u-sing-m.com or 1-888 397-sing (7464). 3. Accompaniment is recommended, but not required. If you use accompaniment, a CD is required– not a tape. 4. Please mark the CD and cover with name of the contestant and the selection to be played. Please bring a backup! *AMTC recommends having JUST ONE SONG on the CD, to prevent the possibility of human error when locating the song. 5. For your Day One or Day Two performance, you will keep your CD with you and turn it in while you are standing in line. 6. Cordless, headset, or stand microphones are available for singers. 7. Singers may be able to practice with a microphone on stage if they arrive and are ready to go early Tuesday afternoon (time permitting). 8. Singers should possess not only a good singing voice, but also showmanship. Desirable attributes for a singer are 1. Good face, 2. Good body, 3. Good voice, 4. Personality, 5. Showmanship, 6. Songwriting 9. Singers and Dancers should perform in full costume. The stage for dancers is made of hardwood floor. 10. Routines will be timed, and time will be called. 11. Select Singers, Dancers, and Stand Up Comics may be chosen by the judges for a Talent Show at the end of all competitions. Time limit for the Talent Show is extended to 2 minutes. AMTC recommends that either a contestant have 2 accompaniment pieces (1 minute and 2 minutes) or, more economically, that he have one accompaniment piece at 2 minutes (in the event that he is selected for the Show) and be prepared to have the earlier Talent Competition performance stopped at one minute. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Acting Competition Appearance Guidelines from Mari Lyn Henry Henry Downey Mgmt., New York and Los Angeles Author, “How to Be a Working Actor” Wardrobe Girls and women should wear a top or blouse in a cool color, like royal blue, teal, purple, or forest green. Reds should be blue-reds like cranberry and burgundy. Men should wear a sport shirt in cool colors. Long-sleeved shirts give you more authority than short sleeves. Do not wear pastels and white because they wash out under the lights or are too reflective. Black has no energy and tends to drain the color from your face. It is not camera friendly and should be worn below the waist as slacks or a skirt. Brights like lime green and orange upstage your face. Avoid all patterns, prints, polka dots, stripes (horizontal and vertical) as well as brand names or slogans on T-shirts, including “AMTC” or “MLI.” Wear a comfortable shoe but not a sneaker, running shoe or extremely high heel. Men wear a black or cordovan leather lace up or loafer. No sequins, shiny beads, metallic fabrics, gold or silver accents, feathers, boas, bathrobes, furry slippers, pajamas. Bras must be worn. Underwear lines should not be visible. Tube tops or sexy tops are distracting and are not allowed. Large or dangling jewelry is not allowed. Avoid reflective metals like gold and silver in belt buckles, hair ornaments, earrings, bracelets, or pins and chains. No costumes. Accessories like baseball caps should only be worn if appropriate to the character. If an accessory (like glasses or a cap) is touched or removed, the contestant will be disqualified, as props (anything that you touch/ move) are not allowed. Hair Hair may frame the face. Avoid long bangs, too much hairspray, or styling gel. Keep hair accessories at a minimum. Men with long hair should pull it back with a rubber band. Makeup Must be natural. Lipstick and blush help put some color in the face (adults/ older teens only). Shape the eyebrow, and wear some mascara to extend the lashes. Men may use a concealer if skin tone is uneven, i.e. dark circles under the eyes or extreme ruddiness like rosacea. Contestant’s Number Must be pinned on the shoulder or collar and clearly visible. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Monologue Suggestions from Mari Lyn Henry Henry Downey Mgmt., New York and Los Angeles Author, “How to Be a Working Actor” Monologues Must not exceed one minute. Must be memorized. The material should be age-appropriate and demonstrate your strength as an actor as well as your castability. Avoid the use of props. Let the audience use their imagination. Light or humorous material is preferable to tragic or heavy dramatic selections. If you are going to write your own monologue, tell a story that is heartwarming and entertaining. Personal tragedies are not appropriate and make the audience uncomfortable. Avoid using a phone call as a substitute for a monologue. No profanity or explicit adult material. (AMTC is a family event. Children will be in the audience.) Don’t try to force emotion. Avoid tears. Keep gestures and movement at a minimum. Hands should always be relaxed. Do not lie down or sit on the floor. You will be using a microphone. Keep your volume at a natural level. If you need to shout for emphasis, back away from the microphone. Do not address the judges before the monologue begins. (E.g., Hi, how ya doin’ today?) When you enter the stage or the microphone is placed on your person, compose yourself for a second, and then begin your selection. When you are through, smile and leave the stage. While there is an audience present consisting of family, friends and other contestants, it is important to remember that the judges are the ones you are trying to impress with your skill and talent. Try not to “play” for the audience. If they appreciate you, that is your reward. If you forget your lines, there is no going back. Points will be deducted. To avoid the onset of nerves, practice meditation and do relaxation exercises so that you can focus on making a positive and professional impression. Observers 12 and Under Family members (ages 12 and under) of contestants may observe competitions without a pass, as long as they are not disruptive. If they plan to attend the banquet or dance party, children must purchase a ticket. We will have Children’s Family Participant Passes at no cost, but a release must be signed. Computer Printouts A printout is given to your Director at the AMTC conclusion with each contestant’s scores. It includes cumulative scores and rankings in each contest. The Awards Banquet The Awards Banquet is an exciting climax to AMTC, featuring highlights of the week, as well as a special tribute to the parents in attendance. Dressy wear is required, such as a silk dress or suit, although some wear cocktail or evening clothes for this event. NO BLUE JEANS OR CASUAL CLOTHES. No one may enter the room without a ticket, until the buffet lines are taken down, usually 1.25 hours into the event. AMTC pays by seated head count for this banquet. Because we pay by seated head, even small children must purchase a ticket, unless they sit on a parent’s lap. Overall Winners must be present to win. We encourage all contestants to come to the Banquet, as it provides an exciting climax and emotional farewell. AMTC is embarrassed when winners in any category are not present. Contestants who do not purchase a ticket may enter the room when the buffet lines are removed. Seating for non-ticket holders cannot be guaranteed. The Awards Banquet will be divided into a Children’s Banquet and a Teen/ Adult Banquet. Tables will be numbered and the table # will appear on the ticket. We can give no refunds, if you want to drop a pre-purchased ticket. Don’t buy tickets unless you are sure. WARNING: tickets purchased separately or later will be seated at a different table. Please ask your Director what his or her policy is regarding the banquets. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Other Rules and Comments If a Contestant misses backstage roll call, she may not go on stage. No exceptions! To prevent missing “roll call” or the call to come and line up for a competition, a Contestant should know his or her category number and name or age group. In addition, the Contestant should wait in the Ballroom or theater until the Emcee calls his group backstage. Sometimes the agenda may appear to have a conflict, where one competition seems to overlap another competition. If you study the lineup further, you will probably see that a “conflict “may place a Contestant are at the beginning of one event and the end of another. Never has an AMTC Contestant missed one event because of another. Therefore, study your agenda upon arrival. Highlight every event (Part 1, 2, 3… etc.) that you are in, as well as which workshops you plan to attend. All Contestants, staff, and Family Participants must wear passes. Door guards are on duty. The AMTC reserves the right to deny entrance to any unidentified person, and to remove from any convention function those who are unidentified or unruly. Participant (or Observer) Passes: A six-day pass is $150.00. A one-day pass is $50.00. This pass covers the Family Member unlimited entry to all Competitions, Workshops, and Security. Parents and Family members are not allowed to sit or stand at the judges' tables during competitions. No still or video cameras are allowed in competition areas during competition. However, pictures may be made on the stage before or after competitions. Pictures may be taken during the Awards Banquet. Parents and Family members should dress in neat, casual clothes and their behavior must be exemplary. AMTC reserves the right to dismiss from convention, without refund, any Contestant, Director, Agent, Family Member, or friend who is found to be intoxicated on any substance, or exhibits loud, lewd or immoral behavior, or whose conduct prevents other Contestants from the full benefit and enjoyment of AMTC or prevents AMTC Staff Members from the proper execution of their duties. Contestants and Family Members are encouraged to bring nutritious snacks and food with them to AMTC. Hotel food is expensive, although the hotel does provide some lower cost options for our attendees. However, schedules are tight, and eating properly is imperative. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Registration will be open by noon on Day One. Everyone must individually register. For contestants arriving with their parents, they should proceed together to AMTC registration for the contestant packet, or to purchase Family Participant Pass(es). A photo ID will be required for the adults. Please bring a signed copy of your release (Contestants and all Family Participants). Releases must accompany each registrant. A Contestant may add competitions at AMTC, IF SPACE IS AVAILABLE. Since space cannot be guaranteed, we recommend that you decide with your Director what events you would like to enter. Enter only those events in which you can perform well. Refunds are not available. Extra Competitions are $75.00 each. Makeup and Dress at Convention Actor’s Scene must approve all Competition Outfits. In general, some points are common: The Agents continue to ask Contestants to be "natural," not overdone or “sexy.” Don't allow makeup or hair to be “creative.” Children are not allowed to wear makeup at all, in photos or in person. AMTC is not a hair show. When not in competition, wear fun, casual clothes- nothing expensive. Some specifics: Teens and women must wear bras. Don’t let panty lines show. Girls competing in the 12 and under age divisions (no matter how tall) cannot wear heels higher than 1 inch. No tube tops. No tight clothes. Skirts must be AT LEAST 4 inches below the buttocks. The judges must not see underwear. Guys cannot have underwear showing above pants. Actors have very specific guidelines. See previous pages. Guys should not wear obvious, sticky, or shiny hair gel. If a product is used, it must not shine or glow. If your hair is curly (or frizzy), let it go natural. Don’t try to control it with a product. If God made your hair “big,” rejoice in that. If your hair is straight, wear it straight. If your hair is fine or thin (and you are female) don’t layer it. Color should appear natural, not distracting. Your posture should be straight. No slumping. Some Directors do not allow blue jeans. AMTC itself has no rule against neat jeans. Contestants should dress their age! Teens should not look like adults. Adults should not look like teens. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Interview Tips Whether you receive a lot of call backs by Agents at AMTC or you receive none, interview skills are your final impression. They will “make you” or “break you.” Models, do not forget that beauty is not enough. All contestants should keep the following interview skills in mind, and practice them at home among family and friends. Your handshake must be firm. Children and women, do not forget how important your handshake is. Grasp the full hand of the person you are greeting in your full hand and firmly shake, while your eyes meet their eyes. Be warm and friendly. Don’t let your hand be “weak” or “wimpy,” or that is how you may be perceived. On the other hand, when meeting Agents at AMTC, don’t shake hands at all, unless they offer their hands first. However, don’t forget eye contact and smiling. Answer any question in a complete sentence. Try to ad lib (say more). The Agent does not care what you say as much as showing that you have the courage and personality to communicate. Say your name clearly and distinctly. Many people don’t pronounce their own names well. Remember that the person you are meeting has no idea who you are. Speak up. Interviews are not a good time to be shy or quiet. Smile. Be friendly. Study the program book to know the Agent you are meeting. That Agent will be flattered and impressed if you know who they are and what they do. Have a few intelligent questions ready, such as: o “Do you have any suggestions about my pictures?” o “Do you have any suggestions on how I might improve?” Parents, your children and teens (no matter their age) must speak for themselves, independent of your “prompting.” Resist the temptation to answer for them or tell them to say thank you. Don’t ask a negative question, such as “Why didn’t you call me back?” Say “thank you,” and mean it after your interview, no matter how short it is. At our last convention, a contestant asked an Agent to critique her pictures. The Agent was honest, and didn’t like many. The contestant followed up by rearranging her book. The Agent was so impressed with her attitude that she was offered Summer Internship on the spot! Attitude is everything! Desire, perseverance, personality, intelligence, and attitude are shown during an interview. These traits are vital to your future success. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Call Backs and Speed Networking Callbacks will be handed out after the Talent Show to each Director. Talent Show or late callbacks may not be computer collated, and will be posted on the bulletin board in the foyer. At interviews only registered Contestants and one parent of those under 18 are allowed in the room. No parent, Director or staff member may stand in any line. Interview tables will be spread around the perimeter of the ballroom with # signs on each table. Please use your Interview Guidelines Form to know which Agents are at which tables and in which rooms. Contestants should plan with whom they would like to interview for Speed Networking, so they don’t waste time standing in line for the wrong Agent. Our Interview Day will be separated into two parts: Speed Networking and Call Backs. Those who receive four (4) or fewer callbacks may enter into Speed Networking. However, they cannot interview with Call Backs at that time. They should come back during the callback period for this purpose. Not all Agents will participate in Speed Networking, although most will. All Agents should be present for the Callback interview period. Advise Contestants to take a small pad and write down with whom they interview and the results for later review. (They will have time to do this while waiting in line for the next Agent.) Boxes will be in the Ballroom Foyer for Contestants to leave their material if they do not wish to wait in line. These boxes are mailed back to each Agent directly after AMTC, so they can share them with their associates. Contracts have resulted from photos or comp cards left in boxes, although no guarantees can be made. Please remember that AMTC is an educational event. Female Fashion models (not children, actors, singers, dancers, plus, or commercial models) may be asked to wear a bikini to Interviews (with a cover-up). Please discuss this option. Program Book & Printing The AMTC Program Book is dynamic. We strongly recommend that you place your photo in the book. The Agents use the program as a reference point to remember each contestant in attendance. Your Director will guide you in choosing a photo. Our printing company allows you to submit slides, scans or prints of any size. Your photo will be in color. *No laser prints. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Speed Networking What is Speed Networking? If you have heard of “Speed Dating,” “Speed Networking” is a similar concept for businesses. It is gaining popularity in the business community by allowing professionals to meet, greet and present their ideas to other businesses in a fastpaced, fun, and productive style. AMTC is the convention pioneer with this same concept. Contestants with 4 or fewer Call Backs should come to Speed Networking. If you have 5 or more Call Backs, please come to Call Back Interviews only. How Speed Networking will work: Agents, Managers & Casting Directors will be around the Ballroom at numbered tables. AMTC has a CD recorded, and every 60 and 70 seconds a chime(s) will sound. The models, actors, singers and dancers have 60 seconds to “present” themselves in a fastpace “meet and greet” presentation (one chime sounds). This will be followed by a 10 second grace period to conclude the interview and move forward in line or to the next interview (four chimes sound). Talent and parents will stand (not sit). The models can give a description of themselves: Example: “Hi. I’m Mary Smith. I’m 16 years old, a rising junior at Booth High School. I’m 5 feet, eight inches tall, and my measurements are 34B-25-36, but I’m working on my hips. I like to run track. I’m athletic. I have a B+ average in school. I love to travel, and I’m studying Spanish. I think different cultures are really fun. This is my Mom, Miriam Smith, and she’s a nurse. I’d be happy to come to a major market, if invited. Can I show you a few of my pictures? Do you have any advice for me?” The actors can talk about themselves and/or present a short script. The singers can talk and sing a few seconds (a cappella), if desired. Fashion models might elect to wear a swimsuit (bikinis are preferred by Agents) and a cover-up. Children, commercial models, actors, and talent can wear the typical, fitted casual wear (skirts/ dresses for females). Children need to do their own speaking. To recap, AMTC performers have 60 seconds to “sell” themselves and/or their talent and personality. They can save some of their 60second interview for one question and/or to show their picture(s) or a comp card. The Agent’s only responsibility is to: A. Say, “thank you.” B. Say, “I like you. Please come back for a Call Back with me.” C. Say, “I might be interested. Please leave your photo/ comp/ CD in my box.” D. Answer one question, briefly, if asked. Speed Networking will allow contestants to see more Agents. Contestants and parents know how long a line will take. “Speed Networking” gives contestants more interviews, more visibility and more responsibility. Agents are trained professionals. In that capacity, Agents believe, “I can tell if I like someone in 10-15 seconds.” Therefore, Speed Networking allows both Contestants and Agents to maximize exposure. Call Backs will be as before, lasting between 2 and 5 minutes. Visit our curriculum website, www.amtconline.com, for additional information. Transportation/ Travel Most Contestants arrange their own travel to and from AMTC. Our recommended AMTC Travel Agents include Blakely and Susan at Travel Management in Charleston, SC, at (800) 845-3914. Travel Management is very courteous, professional, and established. They handle all VIP and staff tickets to AMTC. They will also be able to guide you toward any discounts available. Enforcing the Rules If you have any doubts or questions, please call or write with your concerns as soon as possible. An AMTC proctor will monitor each contest. We will determine if a contestant breaks a rule and this contestant will be disqualified or points deducted from that competition only. We will be impartial and use our best judgment for each contestant. Decisions will not be successfully debated. You will be notified of any rule violations or disqualifications.
