Departmental Information The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Montana State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Mathematics Education at the Assistant Professor level to begin in August 2007. Exceptional candidates will be considered for an appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level. A second tenure-track position may become available contingent upon funding approval. Founded in 1893, Montana State University-Bozeman is a land grant university with total enrollment of 12,000 students including 1550 graduate students. Research funding currently exceeds $100 million per year and has been growing steadily. The Department of Mathematical Sciences includes 28 tenure-track faculty members in mathematics education (5), mathematics (15), and statistics (8). The department currently serves over 100 M.S. and Ph.D. graduate students and nearly 100 undergraduate majors. Mathematics education plays a vital role in both graduate and undergraduate education at MSU. We currently have over 40 secondary mathematics education majors. Our Master of Science in Mathematics Education program, nationally recognized for its extensive distance learning component, averages between 30 and 40 participants each year. Bozeman is located in a mountain valley 90 miles from Yellowstone National Park with a resident population of about 80,000 in the Gallatin Valley. Its K-12 educational system, the strong reputation of Montana State University, and the pristine natural environment with outstanding recreational opportunities combine to make Bozeman one of America's most desirable locations. Duties and Responsibilities We seek a talented and enthusiastic mathematics educator who demonstrates a strong commitment to teaching undergraduate and graduate mathematics and mathematics education courses, establishing an active research program in mathematics education, and strengthening K-12 mathematics education through professional development and outreach. The candidate must be a mathematics educator whose professional interests and vision complement the broad talents of Montana State's mathematics education faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and Montana's teachers. We seek a candidate who has a strong background in mathematics and expertise or strong interest in teaching distance delivery mathematics education courses. As a tenure-track faculty member, the successful candidate must be able to balance and meet the demands of teaching and advising activities, secure external funding, carry out research and publish in appropriate sources, serve on both master's and doctorate committees, and participate in departmental, collegial and university services. Demonstrated excellence in teaching 2. Teaching experience at either the elementary, middle, or high school level 3. Strong mathematics background (graduate mathematics coursework) 4. Demonstrated or potential ability to secure independent external funding 5.
