The Holiness of God Almighty

We may worship God because he is the creator or because he is all powerful, but what about His holiness.

Many men think that aliens are our creator and would rather think that aliens put us here rather than a HOLY God.

I) God's Holiness:

Holiness is the very excellency of the divine nature; the great

God is "glorious in holiness" (Ex. 15:11). Therefore we read,

"Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look

on iniquity" (Hab. 1:13).

Just as power is the opposite of weakness, as wisdom is the

opposite of folly, knowledge the opposite of ignorance, so

holiness is the opposite of all moral blemish or defilement.

He is absolute purity, unsullied even by the shadow of sin. "God

is light, and in him is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5).

The sum of all moral excellency is found in Him.

The Bible says, "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and

canst not look on iniquity" (Hab. 1:13).

Ps 29:2 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship

the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

S. Charnock said, "Power is God's hand or arm, omniscience His

eye, mercy His bowels, eternity His duration, but holiness is

His beauty"

Pink: This perfection, as none other, is solemnly celebrated

before the throne of heaven, the seraphim crying, "Holy, holy,

holy, is the LORD of hosts" (Isa. 6:3). God Himself singles out

this perfection, "Once have I sworn by my holiness" (Ps.

89:35). God swears by His holiness because that is a fuller

expression of Himself than anything else.

Why did not the seraphim cry, "Powerful, powerful, powerful, is

the LORD of host."

II) Holiness is why He is due all worship:

"Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; he is

holy" (Ps. 99:5).

While things like wisdom, knowledge and power may be admired.

While we may extol God because he is the creator, it is God's

holiness that makes worship due him.

J. Howe (1670) said, "It is an attribute of attributes."

It is an attribute that runs through all other attributes of

God. As Pink put it, it is the glory of all the rest of his

attributes. As all his other attributes would be weak without

almightiness to back them, so all would be uncomely without

holiness to adorn them.

It is what seperates his kind of power from all other power.

Satan can work wonders and appear as an angel of light but he

is not holy. Although none has the power of God, it is the fact

that it is adorned in holiness that sets his power apart.

Re 15:4 Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name?

for [thou] ONLY [art] holy: for all nations shall come and

worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.

IT DOES NOT SAY FOR THOU ONLY HAS A BIG STICK OR ROD OF IRON.

CHRIST"S ROD OF IRON WILL BE A HOLY ROD.

Ps 29:2 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name;

worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

Ps 96:9 O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear

before him, all the earth.

Ps 99:5 Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his

footstool; [for] he [is] holy.

Ps 99:9 Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill;

for the LORD our God [is] holy.

III) The man who made the website that mocks a baptist church and

mocks God's judgements fails to understand God's holiness.

He is critisising God's judgement on the world when he sent the

great flood, but it is God's holiness that causes and question

of God's actions to vaporize.

"The LORD is righteous in all His ways, and holy in all his

works" (Ps. 145:17).

When God destroyed the world because of sin, it was a HOLY WORK.

God created the angels as HOLY angels, but some kept not their

fisrt estate. Gog created Satan perfect, but it was INIQUITY

that was found in him (Ez 28:15). God made man upright (Ecc

7:29), but man rebelled against a HOLY God.

It is not just that God is creator and has the right to do what

he wants with His creation, but it is His holiness that gives

him the moral right to do so.

IV) The Antichrist:

His attributes:

wisdom and understanding: He will understand "dark

sentences" according to Da 8:23

greatness: Da 8:9

power and great authority:

Re 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard,

and his feet were as [the feet] of a bear, and his mouth

as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his

power, and his seat, and great authority. 4 And they

worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast:

and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who [is] like

unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

miracles:

Re 13:14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by

[the means of] those miracles which he had power to do

in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on

the earth, that they should make an image to the beast,

which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

signs and wonders: "[Even him], whose coming is after the

working of Satan with all power and signs and lying

wonders," (2Th 2:9)

Holiness will be completely absent from his makeup. He is

called the "son of perdition."

Satan is designated "that evil one" according to 1Jo 3:12.

1Jo 3:12 Not as Cain, [who] was of that wicked one, and slew

his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own

works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

V) It is God's holiness that causes men to fall prostrate before

him.

Ex 3:4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God

called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said,

Moses, Moses. And he said, Here [am] I. 5 And he said, Draw

not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for

the place whereon thou standest [is] holy ground. 6 Moreover

he said, I [am] the God of thy father, the God of Abraham,

the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his

face; for he was afraid to look upon God.

It is God's holiness that seperates men from God the most. It is

his holiness that makes men at enmity with him.

Ro 8:7 Because the carnal mind [is] enmity against God: for it

is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

God's law is holy and reveals God's holiness.

It is the holiness of God that men are in rebellion against not

his power for they shall worship Satan and the antichrist

becasue of his power.

It is holiness that makes men hate God's word. The scriptures

are called the "holy scriptures." If they were just some

mystical writings men would love it. But because they are the

"holy scriptures" unregenerated men hate it and mock it.

One might say, no it's because the Bible is truth, but it is

truth clothed in holiness.

Isaiah was undone because of the holiness of God:

Isa 6:3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy,

holy, [is] the LORD of hosts: the whole earth [is] full of

his glory. 4 And the posts of the door moved at the voice of

him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 Then

said I, Woe [is] me! for I am undone; because I [am] a man

of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of

unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of

hosts. 6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a

live coal in his hand, [which] he had taken with the tongs

from off the altar: 7 And he laid [it] upon my mouth, and

said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is

taken away, and thy sin purged.

VI) It is God's holiness that required the sacrifice of Christ.

Pink: God's holiness is manifested at the cross. Wondrously,

and yet most solemnly does the atonement display God's

infinite holiness and abhorrence of sin. How hateful must

sin be to God for Him to punish it to its utmost desserts

when it was imputed to His Son!

S. Charnock: Not all the vials of judgment that have or shall

be poured out upon the wicked world, nor the flaming furnace

of a sinner's conscience, nor the irreversible sentence

pronounced against the rebellious demons, nor the groans of

the damned creatures, give such a demonstration of God's

hatred of sin, as the wrath of God let loose upon His Son.

Never did Divine holiness appear more beautiful and lovely

than at the time our Savior's countenance was most marred in

the midst of His dying groans. This Himself acknowledges in

Psalm 22. When God had turned His smiling face from Him, and

thrust His sharp knife into His heart, which forced that

terrible cry from Him, "My God, My God, why hast thou

forsaken me?" He adores this perfection, "Thou art holy,"

(v. 3) (S. Charnock).

It was God's holy law that was violated.

It is sin that God can not look upon (Hab 1:13).

Because God is holy, acceptance with Him on the ground of

creature doings is utterly impossible.

Christ was that HOLY substitute. God ONLY is holy (Rev

15:4) and Christ is HOLY (Lu 1:35).

Every poor sinner who has fled to Him for refuge stands,

"accepted in the beloved" (Eph. 1:6).

VII) It is God's holiness that gives God the right and obligation

to cast the unregenerated sinner into a lake of fire.

"The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD"

(Prov. 15:26).

Men do not believe in the holiness of God.

They think that his love and mercy will override everything

else, but it is His holiness that every attribute that he has is

adorned with.

It was for the one sin of Adam that man was cursed.

It was for one sin that a cursed was placed on the posterity

of Canaan. It was for one sin that Moses was not allowed to

enter the promised land.

WHY? ALL BECAUSE GOD IS HOLY.

HOW MAN NEEDS A SUBSTITUTE.

VIII) Because God is holy his people should be holy .

Le 19:2 Speak unto all the congregation of the children of

Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD

your God [am] holy.

This is not just a command to them that were under the law:

1Pe 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

S. Charnock: "This is the prime way of honoring God. We do not

so glorify God by elevated admirations, or eloquent

expressions, or pompous services of Him, as when we aspire to

a conversing with Him with unstained spirits, and live to Him

in living like Him."

Pink: Then as God alone is the source and fount of holiness,

let us earnestly seek holiness from Him; let our daily prayer

be that He may "sanctify us wholly; and our whole spirit and

soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our

Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Thess. 5:23).
