Accelerated Option information
Spring 2010
Criteria for Accelerated Option: All students who wish to take Sociology for accelerated credit for the
semester must agree to the following criteria:
1.
submit all assignments on schedule - late assignments will be severely penalized

five points will be deducted for each school day an accelerated reading is turned in late

10 points will be deducted for each school day the book reviews are turned in late
2.
complete the following accelerated assignments to satisfaction:
a. Test essay questions on class tests of either a more difficult nature or at a more
sophisticated level of thinking and writing. Both the thinking level of the questions and the
expectations of responses will increase during the semester.
b. 4-5 additional readings. The readings will be assigned or approved by the teacher. The
teacher may also choose to occasionally substitute other media such as films, library
exhibits, or lectures for readings. The purpose is to improve close analytical reading of
challenging material and to enhance the ability to summarize, synthesize and respond with
good writing skills.

Complete a sociological analysis of a book. A guide sheet will be provided to help you complete
your analysis. Preview the books in Ms. Santacroce’s room and then find a copy in a local library
or purchase a copy. Any one of the books below will satisfy the book review requirement:

Our America: Life and Death on the South Side of Chicago, LeAlan Jones and Lloyd Newman

Your final grade in this class will be calculated as follows:


quarter three – 70% based on class material, 30 % based on accelerated material
quarter four – 70% based on class material, 30 % based on accelerated material

final grade 
quarter three - 40%

quarter four - 40 %

final exam - 20%

Note: if you earn extra credit in the college prep portion of the course, you may not have
an average above 100%.
